1Es war im fünfzehnten Regierungsjahr des römischen Kaisers Tiberius. Pilatus war Statthalter in Judäa; Herodes Antipas herrschte[1] über Galiläa, sein Bruder Philippus regierte[2] in Ituräa und Trachonitis, und Lysanias war Herrscher in Abilene.2Hannas und Kaiphas waren Hohe Priester. In dieser Zeit erhielt Johannes, der Sohn des Zacharias, draußen in der Wildnis eine Botschaft von Gott. (Lk 1,80)3Daraufhin zog Johannes in der Gegend des Jordan von Ort zu Ort und predigte den Menschen: Sie sollten sich taufen lassen als Zeichen dafür, dass sie sich von ihren Sünden abgekehrt und Gott zugewandt hatten, um Vergebung zu erhalten.[3] (Apg 13,24; Apg 19,4)4So erfüllte sich, was im Propheten Jesaja steht: »Er ist eine Stimme, die in der Wüste ruft: ›Schafft Raum für das Kommen des Herrn! Ebnet ihm den Weg! (Jes 40,3)5Die Täler sollen aufgeschüttet, die Berge und Hügel eingeebnet werden! Das Krumme soll gerade und das Raue glatt werden!6Dann werden alle Menschen Gottes Heil sehen.‹«[4] (Lk 2,30; Apg 28,28; Tit 2,11)7Und so sprach Johannes zu den Menschen, die zahlreich zu ihm kamen, um sich taufen zu lassen: »Ihr Schlangenbrut! Wer hat euch eingeredet, ihr könntet dem bevorstehenden Gericht Gottes entgehen? (Mt 12,34; Mt 23,33)8Beweist durch euren Lebenswandel, dass ihr euch wirklich von euren Sünden abgekehrt und Gott zugewandt habt. Es genügt nicht zu sagen: ›Wir sind die Nachkommen Abrahams. Uns kann nichts geschehen.‹ Das beweist gar nichts. Wenn Gott wollte, könnte er aus diesen Steinen Kinder Abrahams machen. (Joh 8,33; Apg 3,25)9Die Axt wird schon durch die Luft geschwungen, bereit, eure Wurzeln abzuhacken; denn jeder Baum, der keine guten Früchte bringt, wird umgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen.« (Mt 7,19; Joh 15,6)10Die Menge fragte: »Und was sollen wir tun?«11Johannes erwiderte: »Wenn ihr zwei Mäntel habt, gebt einen den Armen. Wenn ihr zu essen habt, teilt es mit denen, die hungrig sind.« (Jak 2,15; 1Joh 3,17)12Auch Steuereinnehmer kamen zu ihm, um sich taufen zu lassen. Und auch sie fragten: »Meister, was sollen wir tun?« (Lk 7,29)13»Beweist, dass ihr ehrlich seid«, erwiderte er, »treibt nicht mehr Steuern ein, als die römische Regierung euch vorschreibt.« (Lk 19,8)14»Und was sollen wir tun?«, fragten einige Soldaten. Johannes antwortete: »Seid keine Räuber und Erpresser. Gebt euch mit eurem Sold zufrieden.« (2Mo 23,1; 3Mo 19,11)15Alle warteten sehr auf das Kommen des Christus und wollten unbedingt wissen, ob Johannes der Christus sei.16Auf diese Frage antwortete Johannes: »Ich taufe mit[5] Wasser, aber bald kommt einer, der stärker ist als ich – so viel gewaltiger, dass ich nicht einmal wert bin, sein Diener zu sein[6]. Er wird euch mit dem Heiligen Geist und mit Feuer[7] taufen. (Mk 1,4; Joh 1,26; Apg 1,5; Apg 2,3; Apg 11,16; Apg 13,25; Apg 19,4)17Er wird mit seiner Schaufel die Spreu vom Weizen trennen, den Dreschplatz aufräumen und den Weizen in die Scheune bringen; die Spreu aber wird er im ewigen Feuer verbrennen.« (Mt 13,30)18Und noch viele solche Warnungen sprach Johannes aus, als er dem Volk die Botschaft Gottes verkündete.19Selbst den Fürsten Herodes Antipas wies Johannes offen zurecht, weil er Herodias, die Frau seines Bruders, geheiratet und noch viel anderes Unrecht begangen hatte. (Mt 14,3; Mk 6,17)20Und die Schuld des Herodes wurde noch größer, als er Johannes ins Gefängnis werfen ließ.
Jesus lässt sich taufen
21Als Johannes wieder einmal viele Menschen taufte, ließ sich auch Jesus taufen. Als er betete, öffnete sich der Himmel,22und der Heilige Geist kam in Gestalt einer Taube auf ihn herab. Und eine Stimme vom Himmel sprach: »Du bist mein geliebter Sohn, an dir habe ich große Freude.[8]« (1Mo 22,2; Ps 2,7; Jes 42,1; Mt 12,18; Mt 17,5; Mk 9,7; Lk 9,35; 2Petr 1,17)

Lysanias was ruler of Abilene.2Annas and Caiaphas were high priests. At that time God’s word came to John, son of Zechariah, in the desert.3He went into all the countryside around the River Jordan. There he preached that people should be baptised and turn away from their sins. Then God would forgive them.4Here is what is written in the book of Isaiah the prophet. It says, ‘A messenger is calling out in the desert, “Prepare the way for the Lord. Make straight paths for him.5Every valley will be filled in. Every mountain and hill will be made level. The crooked roads will become straight. The rough ways will become smooth.6And all people will see God’s salvation.” ’ (Jes 40,3)7John spoke to the crowds coming to be baptised by him. He said, ‘You are like a nest of poisonous snakes! Who warned you to escape the coming of God’s anger?8Live in a way that shows you have turned away from your sins. And don’t start saying to yourselves, “Abraham is our father.” I tell you, God can raise up children for Abraham even from these stones.9The axe is already lying at the roots of the trees. All the trees that don’t produce good fruit will be cut down. They will be thrown into the fire.’10‘Then what should we do?’ the crowd asked.11John answered, ‘Anyone who has extra clothes should share with the one who has none. And anyone who has extra food should do the same.’12Even tax collectors came to be baptised. ‘Teacher’, they asked, ‘what should we do?’13‘Don’t collect any more than you are required to,’ John told them.14Then some soldiers asked him, ‘And what should we do?’ John replied, ‘Don’t force people to give you money. Don’t bring false charges against people. Be happy with your pay.’15The people were waiting. They were expecting something. They were all wondering in their hearts if John might be the Messiah.16John answered them all, ‘I baptise you with water. But one who is more powerful than I am will come. I’m not good enough to untie the straps of his sandals. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire.17His pitchfork is in his hand to toss the straw away from his threshing-floor. He will gather the wheat into his barn. But he will burn up the husks with fire that can’t be put out.’18John said many other things to warn the people. He also announced the good news to them.19But John found fault with Herod, the ruler of Galilee, because of his marriage to Herodias. She was the wife of Herod’s brother. John also spoke strongly to Herod about all the other evil things he had done.20So Herod locked John up in prison. Herod added this sin to all his others.
The baptism and family line of Jesus
21When all the people were being baptised, Jesus was baptised too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened.22The Holy Spirit came to rest on him in the form of a dove. A voice came from heaven. It said, ‘You are my Son, and I love you. I am very pleased with you.’23Jesus was about 30 years old when he began his special work for God and others. It was thought that he was the son of Joseph. Joseph was the son of Heli.24Heli was the son of Matthat. Matthat was the son of Levi. Levi was the son of Melki. Melki was the son of Jannai. Jannai was the son of Joseph.25Joseph was the son of Mattathias. Mattathias was the son of Amos. Amos was the son of Nahum. Nahum was the son of Esli. Esli was the son of Naggai.26Naggai was the son of Maath. Maath was the son of Mattathias. Mattathias was the son of Semein. Semein was the son of Josek.
