1Habt keine Angst. Ihr vertraut auf Gott, nun vertraut auch auf mich!2Es gibt viele Wohnungen im Haus meines Vaters, und ich gehe voraus, um euch einen Platz vorzubereiten. Wenn es nicht so wäre, hätte ich es euch dann so gesagt? (Ps 90,1; Joh 2,16)3Wenn dann alles bereit ist, werde ich kommen und euch holen, damit ihr immer bei mir seid, dort, wo ich bin.4Ihr wisst ja, wohin ich gehe und wie ihr dorthin kommen könnt.«5»Nein, Herr, das wissen wir nicht«, sagte Thomas. »Wir haben keine Ahnung, wo du hingehst; wie können wir da den Weg kennen?«6Jesus sagte zu ihm: »Ich bin der Weg, die Wahrheit und das Leben. Niemand kommt zum Vater außer durch mich. (Joh 1,4; Joh 8,32; Joh 10,10; Joh 11,25; Röm 5,2; Eph 2,18; Hebr 10,20; 1Joh 5,20)7Wenn ihr erkannt habt, wer ich bin, dann habt ihr auch erkannt, wer mein Vater ist.[1] Doch von nun an kennt ihr ihn und habt ihn gesehen!« (Joh 6,46; Joh 8,19; 1Joh 2,13)8Philippus sagte: »Herr, zeig uns den Vater, dann sind wir zufrieden.«9Jesus erwiderte: »Philippus, weißt du denn nach all der Zeit, die ich bei euch war, noch immer nicht, wer ich bin? Wer mich gesehen hat, hat den Vater gesehen! Warum verlangst du noch, ihn zu sehen? (Joh 1,14; Joh 12,45; 2Kor 4,4; Kol 1,15; Hebr 1,3)10Glaubst du nicht, dass ich im Vater bin und der Vater in mir ist? Die Worte, die ich euch sage, stammen ja nicht von mir, sondern der Vater, der in mir lebt, wirkt durch mich. (Joh 5,19; Joh 10,38; Joh 17,11)11Glaubt doch, dass ich im Vater bin und der Vater in mir ist. Oder glaubt wenigstens aufgrund von dem, was ich getan habe.12Ich versichere euch: Wer an mich glaubt, wird dieselben Dinge tun, die ich getan habe, ja noch größere, denn ich gehe, um beim Vater zu sein.13Ihr dürft in meinem Namen um alles bitten, und ich werde eure Bitten erfüllen, weil durch den Sohn der Vater verherrlicht wird.14Bittet, um was ihr wollt, in meinem Namen, und ich werde es tun!
Jesus verspricht den Jüngern den Heiligen Geist
15Wenn ihr mich liebt, werdet ihr meine Gebote halten.16Und ich werde den Vater bitten, und er wird euch einen anderen Ratgeber[2] geben, der euch nie verlassen wird. (Joh 14,26; Joh 15,26)17Es ist der Geist der Wahrheit. Die Welt kann ihn nicht empfangen, denn sie sieht ihn nicht und erkennt ihn nicht. Ihr aber kennt ihn, weil er bei euch bleibt und in euch sein wird. (Röm 8,15; 1Joh 3,24)18Nein, ich werde euch nicht verwaist zurücklassen – ich werde zu euch kommen. (Röm 8,9; 2Kor 3,17)19Die Welt wird mich schon bald nicht mehr sehen, doch ihr werdet es. Denn ich werde leben, und ihr werdet auch leben.20Wenn ich wieder zum Leben auferstanden bin, werdet ihr wissen, dass ich in meinem Vater bin und ihr in mir seid und ich in euch. (Joh 10,38; Joh 15,4; Joh 16,16; Joh 17,21)21Wer meine Gebote kennt und sie befolgt, der liebt mich. Und weil er mich liebt, wird mein Vater ihn lieben und ich werde ihn lieben. Und ich werde mich ihm persönlich zu erkennen geben.« (Joh 15,10; Joh 16,27; 1Joh 2,5; 2Joh 1,6)22Judas (nicht Judas Iskariot, sondern der andere Jünger gleichen Namens) sagte zu ihm: »Herr, warum willst du dich nur uns zu erkennen geben und nicht der ganzen Welt?« (Lk 6,16; Apg 10,41)23Jesus erwiderte: »Wer mich liebt, wird tun, was ich sage. Mein Vater wird ihn lieben, und wir werden zu ihm kommen und bei ihm wohnen. (Ps 91,1; Joh 15,10; Eph 3,17; 1Joh 4,16; 1Joh 5,3; Offb 3,20; Offb 21,3)24Wer mich nicht liebt, wird nicht tun, was ich sage. Vergesst nicht: Meine Worte kommen nicht aus mir selbst, sondern vom Vater, der mich gesandt hat. (Joh 7,16; Joh 14,10)25Ich sage euch all diese Dinge jetzt, solange ich noch bei euch bin.26Doch wenn der Vater den Ratgeber als meinen Stellvertreter schickt – und damit meine ich den Heiligen Geist –, wird er euch alles lehren und euch an alles erinnern, was ich euch gesagt habe. (Joh 1,33; Joh 20,19; Phil 4,7; Kol 3,15)27Ich lasse euch ein Geschenk zurück – meinen Frieden. Und der Friede, den ich schenke, ist nicht wie der Friede, den die Welt gibt. Deshalb sorgt euch nicht und habt keine Angst.28Denkt an das, was ich euch gesagt habe: Ich gehe fort, aber ich werde wieder zu euch kommen. Wenn ihr mich wirklich lieb habt, freut ihr euch für mich, weil ich jetzt zum Vater gehen darf, der größer ist als ich.29Ich habe euch all diese Dinge gesagt, ehe sie geschehen, damit ihr, wenn sie eintreffen, glaubt. (Joh 13,19)30Mir bleibt nicht mehr viel Zeit, mit euch zu sprechen, weil der Herrscher dieser Welt schon ganz nah ist. Er hat keine Macht über mich;31doch ich werde tun, was der Vater von mir will, damit die Welt erkennt, dass ich den Vater liebe. Kommt, lasst uns von hier weggehen. (Joh 10,18; Joh 12,49)
1‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God. Believe in me also.2There are many rooms in my Father’s house. If this were not true, would I have told you that I am going there? Would I have told you that I would prepare a place for you there?3If I go and do that, I will come back. And I will take you to be with me. Then you will also be where I am.4You know the way to the place where I am going.’
Jesus is the way to the Father
5Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we don’t know where you are going. So how can we know the way?’6Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.7If you really know me, you will know my Father also. From now on, you do know him. And you have seen him.’8Philip said, ‘Lord, show us the Father. That will be enough for us.’9Jesus answered, ‘Don’t you know me, Philip? I have been among you such a long time! Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. So how can you say, “Show us the Father”?10Don’t you believe that I am in the Father? Don’t you believe that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. The Father lives in me. He is the one who is doing his work.11Believe me when I say I am in the Father. Also believe that the Father is in me. Or at least believe what the works I have been doing say about me.12What I’m about to tell you is true. Anyone who believes in me will do the works I have been doing. In fact, they will do even greater things. That’s because I am going to the Father.13And I will do anything you ask in my name. Then the Father will receive glory from the Son.14You may ask me for anything in my name. I will do it.
Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will come
15‘If you love me, obey my commands.16I will ask the Father. And he will give you another friend to help you and to be with you for ever.17That friend is the Spirit of truth. The world can’t accept him. That’s because the world does not see him or know him. But you know him. He lives with you, and he will be in you.18I will not leave you like children who don’t have parents. I will come to you.19Before long, the world will not see me anymore. But you will see me. Because I live, you will live also.20On that day you will realise that I am in my Father. You will know that you are in me, and I am in you.21Anyone who has my commands and obeys them loves me. My Father will love the one who loves me. I too will love them. And I will show myself to them.’22Then Judas spoke. ‘Lord’, he said, ‘why do you plan to show yourself only to us? Why not also to the world?’ The Judas who spoke those words was not Judas Iscariot.23Jesus replied, ‘Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them. We will come to them and make our home with them.24Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. The words you hear me say are not my own. They belong to the Father who sent me.25‘I have spoken all these things while I am still with you.26But the Father will send the Friend in my name to help you. The Friend is the Holy Spirit. He will teach you all things. He will remind you of everything I have said to you.27I leave my peace with you. I give my peace to you. I do not give it to you as the world does. Do not let your hearts be troubled. And do not be afraid.28‘You heard me say, “I am going away. And I am coming back to you.” If you loved me, you would be glad I am going to the Father. The Father is greater than I am.29I have told you now before it happens. Then when it does happen, you will believe.30I will not say much more to you. The prince of this world is coming. He has no power over me.31But he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father. They must also learn that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me to do. ‘Come now. Let us leave.
