1Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.2In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat – for he grants sleep to[1] those he loves.3Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.4Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth.5Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.
1Dacă nu zidește DOMNUL o casă, în zadar trudesc cei ce o zidesc. Dacă nu păzește DOMNUL o cetate, degeaba veghează cel ce o păzește.2Degeaba vă sculați dis‑de‑dimineață și vă culcați târziu, mâncând o pâine câștigată cu durere[1]. Preaiubitului Său însă El îi dă cu adevărat odihnă.[2]3Iată, fiii sunt o moștenire de la DOMNUL, rodul pântecului este o răsplată.4Ca săgețile în mâna unui viteaz, așa sunt fiii din anii tinereții.5Ferice de bărbatul care își umple tolba cu ei; ei nu se vor rușina când vor vorbi cu dușmanii la poartă.
