New International Version

1 An unfriendly person pursues selfish ends and against all sound judgment starts quarrels. 2 Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions. 3 When wickedness comes, so does contempt, and with shame comes reproach. 4 The words of the mouth are deep waters, but the fountain of wisdom is a rushing stream. 5 It is not good to be partial to the wicked and so deprive the innocent of justice. 6 The lips of fools bring them strife, and their mouths invite a beating. 7 The mouths of fools are their undoing, and their lips are a snare to their very lives. 8 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to the inmost parts. 9 One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys. 10 The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. 11 The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they imagine it a wall too high to scale. 12 Before a downfall the heart is haughty, but humility comes before honour. 13 To answer before listening – that is folly and shame. 14 The human spirit can endure in times of illness, but a crushed spirit who can bear? 15 The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out. 16 A gift opens the way and ushers the giver into the presence of the great. 17 In a lawsuit the first to speak seems right, until someone comes forward and cross-examines. 18 Casting the lot settles disputes and keeps strong opponents apart. 19 A brother wronged is more unyielding than a fortified city; disputes are like the barred gates of a citadel. 20 From the fruit of their mouth a person’s stomach is filled; with the harvest of their lips they are satisfied. 21 The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. 22 He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favour from the Lord. 23 The poor plead for mercy, but the rich answer harshly. 24 One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

1 Cel ce s‑a separat își caută propria plăcere; el se dezlănțuie împotriva oricărei înțelepciuni. 2 Cel nesăbuit nu‑și găsește plăcerea în pricepere, ci doar în a face cunoscut ce este în inima lui. 3 Când vine cel rău, vine și disprețul, iar odată cu rușinea, vine și reproșul. 4 Cuvintele gurii unui om sunt ca niște ape adânci; izvorul înțelepciunii este ca un pârâu curgător. 5 Nu este bine să fii părtinitor cu cel rău, sau să nedreptățești pe cel drept la judecată. 6 Buzele nesăbuitului aduc ceartă și gura lui invită la lovituri. 7 Gura celui nesăbuit îi aduce ruina și buzele lui sunt o cursă pentru sufletul lui. 8 Cuvintele bârfitorului sunt ca niște prăjituri; ele alunecă până în odăile pântecului. 9 Cel ce este leneș în lucrul lui este frate cu cel ce distruge. 10 Numele DOMNULUI este un turn tare; cel drept fuge în el și este protejat la înălțime. 11 Averea este o cetate întărită pentru cel bogat; el și‑o închipuie ca pe un zid înalt. 12 Înainte de pieire, inima omului se îngâmfă, dar smerenia merge înaintea gloriei. 13 Cine răspunde fără să fi ascultat face o prostie și își atrage rușinea. 14 Duhul omului îl sprijină în boală, dar cine poate ridica un duh zdrobit? 15 O inimă cu discernământ dobândește cunoștință, și urechea celor înțelepți caută cunoștință. 16 Un dar deschide uși celui ce îl oferă și‑l duce înaintea celor mari. 17 Primul care‑și apără cauza pare drept, însă doar până intră semenul său și‑l cercetează. 18 Sorțul pune capăt neînțelegerilor și decide între cei puternici. 19 Un frate nedreptățit este mai greu de câștigat decât o cetate întărită, și neînțelegerile sunt ca porțile închise ale unei cetăți. 20 Din rodul gurii lui, omul își satură pântecul; din venitul buzelor lui, se satură. 21 Moartea și viața sunt în puterea limbii, iar cei ce o iubesc îi vor mânca roadele. 22 Cel ce‑și găsește o soție găsește ce este bine^[1] și primește astfel o favoare de la DOMNUL. (Ge 2:18) 23 Săracul vorbește cu rugăminți, dar bogatul răspunde cu asprime. 24 Cine are mulți prieteni poate ajunge la ruină, dar există un amic care ține la tine mai mult decât un frate.
