1During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said,2‘I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat.3If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.’4His disciples answered, ‘But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?’5‘How many loaves do you have?’ Jesus asked. ‘Seven,’ they replied.6He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people, and they did so.7They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them.8The people ate and were satisfied. Afterwards the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.9About four thousand were present. After he had sent them away,10he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.11The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven.12He sighed deeply and said, ‘Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.’13Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.
The yeast of the Pharisees and Herod
14The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat.15‘Be careful,’ Jesus warned them. ‘Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.’16They discussed this with one another and said, ‘It is because we have no bread.’17Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: ‘Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?18Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember?19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?’ ‘Twelve,’ they replied.20‘And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?’ They answered, ‘Seven.’21He said to them, ‘Do you still not understand?’
Jesus heals a blind man at Bethsaida
22They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him.23He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spat on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, ‘Do you see anything?’24He looked up and said, ‘I see people; they look like trees walking around.’25Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.26Jesus sent him home, saying, ‘Don’t even go into[1] the village.’
Peter declares that Jesus is the Messiah
27Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, ‘Who do people say I am?’28They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.’29‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’ Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah.’30Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
Jesus predicts his death
31He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.32He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.33But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. ‘Get behind me, Satan!’ he said. ‘You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.’
The way of the cross
34Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.35For whoever wants to save their life[2] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.36What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?37Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?38If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.’
1În zilele acelea s‑a adunat din nou o mare mulțime de oameni și nu aveau ce să mănânce. Isus i‑a chemat pe ucenici și le‑a zis: (Mt 15:32)2– Mi‑e milă de cei din mulțime, pentru că sunt deja trei zile de când ei stau cu Mine și n‑au ce să mănânce,3iar dacă îi las să plece acasă flămânzi, vor leșina pe drum, mai ales că unii dintre ei au venit de departe.4Ucenicii Lui I‑au răspuns: – De unde ar putea lua cineva pâini aici, în pustie, ca să‑i sature pe acești oameni?5Isus i‑a întrebat: – Câte pâini aveți? Ei au zis: – Șapte.6Isus i‑a poruncit mulțimii să se așeze pe pământ. Și după ce a luat cele șapte pâini și a mulțumit, le‑a frânt și le‑a dat ucenicilor Săi ca să le împartă, iar ei le‑au împărțit mulțimii.7Mai aveau și câțiva peștișori. El i‑a binecuvântat și a zis să fie împărțiți și aceștia.8Au mâncat toți și s‑au săturat. Și au adunat șapte coșuri pline cu firimiturile rămase.9Erau în jur de patru mii de bărbați. După ce i‑a lăsat să plece,10Isus S‑a urcat imediat în barcă împreună cu ucenicii Lui și S‑a dus în părțile Dalmanutei.[1] (Mt 15:39)
Fariseii cer un semn
11Fariseii au venit și au început să discute aprins cu Isus, căutând un semn din cer[2] de la El ca să‑L pună la încercare. (Mt 16:1)12Însă Isus, oftând adânc în duhul Său, a zis: „De ce caută această generație un semn? Adevărat vă spun că acestei generații nu i se va da niciun semn.“13Apoi i‑a lăsat, S‑a urcat iarăși în barcă și S‑a dus de cealaltă parte a mării.
Drojdia fariseilor și a lui Irod
14Ucenicii uitaseră să ia pâini și nu aveau cu ei în barcă decât o pâine. (Mt 16:5)15Isus le‑a poruncit, zicând: – Aveți grijă, feriți‑vă de drojdia fariseilor și de drojdia lui Irod!16Ei vorbeau unii cu alții despre faptul că nu aveau pâini.17Cunoscând aceasta, Isus le‑a zis: – De ce vorbiți între voi că n‑aveți pâini? Tot nu înțelegeți, nici nu pricepeți? Aveți inima împietrită?18Aveți ochi, dar nu vedeți și aveți urechi, dar nu auziți?[3] Nu vă mai aduceți aminte, (Jer 5:21)19atunci când am frânt cele cinci pâini la cei cinci mii de oameni, câte coșnițe pline cu firimituri ați ridicat? Ei I‑au zis: – Douăsprezece.20– Iar când am frânt cele șapte pâini la cei patru mii de bărbați, câte coșuri pline cu firimituri ați ridicat? Ei I‑au zis: – Șapte.21Atunci El le‑a zis: – Tot nu înțelegeți?
Isus vindecă un orb la Betsaida
22Când au ajuns în Betsaida, I‑au adus un orb și L‑au rugat să Se atingă de el.23Isus l‑a luat pe orb de mână și l‑a dus afară din sat. A scuipat pe ochii acestuia, Și‑a pus mâinile peste el și l‑a întrebat: – Vezi ceva?24Omul s‑a uitat și a zis: – Văd niște oameni, dar mi se par ca niște pomi care umblă.25Atunci Isus Și‑a pus din nou mâinile peste ochii acestuia, iar el a privit țintă și i‑a revenit vederea. Acum el vedea toate lucrurile clar.26Isus l‑a trimis acasă, zicând: – Să nu intri în sat și nici să nu spui cuiva în sat!
Mărturisirea de credință a lui Petru
27Isus S‑a dus împreună cu ucenicii Lui în satele Cezareei lui Filip[4]. Pe drum, Isus i‑a întrebat pe ucenicii Săi, zicându‑le: – Cine zic oamenii că sunt Eu? (Mt 16:13; Mt 16:20; Lu 9:18)28Ei I‑au răspuns, zicând: – Unii zic că ești Ioan Botezătorul, alții zic că ești Ilie, iar alții spun despre Tine că ești unul dintre profeți.29El i‑a întrebat: – Dar voi, cine ziceți că sunt Eu? Petru, răspunzând, I‑a zis: – Tu ești Cristosul!30Atunci Isus le‑a atras atenția să nu spună nimănui despre El.
Isus vorbește despre moartea și învierea Sa
31Apoi a început să‑i învețe că Fiul Omului trebuie să sufere multe[5] și să fie respins de către bătrâni[6], de către conducătorii preoților și de către cărturari, să fie omorât, iar după trei zile să învie. (Isa 52:13; Mt 16:21; Mr 14:55; Lu 9:22)32Le vorbea deschis despre aceasta. Petru însă L‑a luat deoparte și a început să‑L mustre.33Dar Isus S‑a întors, S‑a uitat la ucenicii Săi și l‑a mustrat pe Petru, zicând: – Pleacă! Înapoia Mea, Satan[7], căci tu nu te gândești la lucrurile lui Dumnezeu, ci la lucrurile oamenilor. (Mr 1:13)
Prețul uceniciei
34Apoi i‑a chemat pe cei din mulțime alături de ucenicii Săi și le‑a zis: „Dacă vrea cineva să vină după Mine, să se lepede de sine, să‑și ia crucea și să Mă urmeze. (Mt 16:24; Lu 9:23)35Căci oricine vrea să‑și salveze viața, o va pierde, dar cel ce‑și pierde viața de dragul Meu și de dragul Evangheliei, o va salva.36Într-adevăr, la ce i‑ar folosi unui om să câștige întreaga lume, dacă și‑ar pierde sufletul?37Sau ce va da un om în schimbul sufletului său?38Căci de cel ce îi va fi rușine de Mine și de cuvintele Mele, în această generație adulteră și păcătoasă, de acela Îi va fi rușine și Fiului Omului când va veni în slava Tatălui Său, cu sfinții îngeri.“
