1Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.2He said: ‘In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought.3And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, “Grant me justice against my adversary.”4‘For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, “Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think,5yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!” ’6And the Lord said, ‘Listen to what the unjust judge says.7And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?8I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?’
The parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector
9To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable:10‘Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.11The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: “God, I thank you that I am not like other people – robbers, evildoers, adulterers – or even like this tax collector.12I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.”13‘But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”14‘I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.’
The little children and Jesus
15People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them.16But Jesus called the children to him and said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.17Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.’
The rich and the kingdom of God
18A certain ruler asked him, ‘Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’19‘Why do you call me good?’ Jesus answered. ‘No-one is good – except God alone.20You know the commandments: “You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honour your father and mother.”[1]’ (Ex 20:12; De 5:16)21‘All these I have kept since I was a boy,’ he said.22When Jesus heard this, he said to him, ‘You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’23When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy.24Jesus looked at him and said, ‘How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!25Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.’26Those who heard this asked, ‘Who then can be saved?’27Jesus replied, ‘What is impossible with man is possible with God.’28Peter said to him, ‘We have left all we had to follow you!’29‘Truly I tell you,’ Jesus said to them, ‘no-one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God30will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.’
Jesus predicts his death a third time
31Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, ‘We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled.32He will be handed over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him and spit on him;33they will flog him and kill him. On the third day he will rise again.’34The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.
A blind beggar receives his sight
35As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging.36When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening.37They told him, ‘Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.’38He called out, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’39Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’40Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him,41‘What do you want me to do for you?’ ‘Lord, I want to see,’ he replied.42Jesus said to him, ‘Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.’43Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.
1Le‑a spus apoi o pildă despre faptul că trebuie să se roage întotdeauna și să nu se descurajeze.2El a zis: – Într‑o cetate era un judecător care de Dumnezeu nu se temea și de oameni nu‑i era rușine.3În cetatea aceea era și o văduvă care tot venea la el și‑i zicea: „Fă‑mi dreptate în disputa cu acuzatorul meu!“4Pentru o vreme n‑a vrut să‑i facă dreptate, dar după aceea și‑a zis: „Chiar dacă nu mă tem de Dumnezeu și nici de oameni nu mi‑e rușine,5totuși, pentru că această văduvă mă tot deranjează, îi voi face dreptate, ca să nu mai vină la nesfârșit și să mă bată la cap!“6Apoi Domnul a zis: – Să auziți ce zice judecătorul cel nedrept!7Și oare Dumnezeu nu le va face dreptate aleșilor Săi, care strigă zi și noapte către El, cu toate că întârzie față de ei?!8Vă spun că le va face dreptate în curând! Dar când va veni Fiul Omului, va găsi El oare credință[1] pe pământ?
Pilda fariseului și a colectorului de taxe
9A mai spus și următoarea pildă pentru unii care se încredeau în ei înșiși că sunt drepți și îi disprețuiau pe ceilalți:10– Doi oameni s‑au dus la Templu să se roage; unul era fariseu, iar celălalt era vameș.11Fariseul stătea în picioare și se ruga în[2] sine însuși astfel: „Dumnezeule, Îți mulțumesc că eu nu sunt precum ceilalți oameni – tâlhari, nedrepți, adulterini – sau ca și vameșul acesta!12Eu postesc de două ori pe săptămână[3] și dau zeciuială din tot ceea ce câștig!“ (Lu 5:33)13Vameșul însă stătea la distanță și nu îndrăznea nici măcar să‑și ridice ochii spre cer, ci se bătea pe piept, zicând: „Dumnezeule, îndură‑Te de mine, păcătosul!“14Eu vă spun că mai degrabă acesta s‑a coborât acasă îndreptățit, decât celălalt. Căci oricine se înalță pe sine, va fi smerit, iar cel ce se smerește, va fi înălțat!
Isus și copilașii
15I‑au adus și niște copilași ca să Se atingă de ei[4], dar ucenicii, când au văzut aceasta, i‑au mustrat. (Mt 19:13; Mr 10:13; Mr 10:16)16Isus însă i‑a chemat la Sine și a zis: „Lăsați copilașii să vină la Mine și nu‑i opriți, pentru că Împărăția lui Dumnezeu este a celor ca ei!17Adevărat vă spun că oricine nu primește ca un copilaș Împărăția lui Dumnezeu, nicidecum nu va intra în ea!“
Isus și conducătorul bogat
18Un anumit conducător L‑a întrebat, zicând: – Bunule Învățător, ce să fac ca să moștenesc viață veșnică? (Mt 19:16; Mr 10:17)19Isus i‑a zis: – De ce Mă numești „bun“? Nimeni nu este bun, decât Unul: Dumnezeu.[5] (Joh 1:1; Joh 10:30; Joh 14:9; Php 2:5; Heb 1:3)20Cunoști poruncile: „Să nu comiți adulter“, „Să nu ucizi“, „Să nu furi“, „Să nu depui mărturie falsă“, „Cinstește‑i pe tatăl tău și pe mama ta.“21El a spus: – Pe toate acestea le‑am păzit încă din tinerețea mea[6].22Auzind aceasta, Isus i‑a zis: – Îți mai lipsește un singur lucru: vinde tot ce ai și împarte săracilor, și vei avea astfel o comoară în ceruri. Apoi vino, urmează‑Mă!23Când a auzit el aceste lucruri, s‑a întristat foarte tare, pentru că era foarte bogat.24Isus a văzut că se întristase foarte tare și a zis: – Cât de greu este pentru cei ce au bogății să intre în Împărăția lui Dumnezeu!25Căci este mai ușor să treacă o cămilă prin deschizătura acului, decât să intre cel bogat în Împărăția lui Dumnezeu!26Cei ce au auzit aceasta au zis: – Atunci cine poate fi mântuit?27El a zis: – Ceea ce este imposibil pentru oameni este posibil pentru Dumnezeu.28Atunci Petru I‑a zis: – Iată, noi le‑am lăsat pe ale noastre și Te‑am urmat.29El le‑a răspuns: – Adevărat vă spun că nu este nimeni care să‑și fi lăsat casa sau soția sau frații sau părinții sau copiii de dragul Împărăției lui Dumnezeu30și care să nu primească mult mai mult în vremea aceasta, iar în veacul care vine, viață veșnică.
Isus vorbește din nou despre moartea și învierea Sa
31Apoi i‑a luat deoparte pe cei doisprezece și le‑a zis: „Iată că ne suim spre Ierusalim și toate cele scrise prin profeți despre Fiul Omului se vor împlini. (Mt 20:17; Mr 10:32)32Căci El va fi dat pe mâna neamurilor, va fi batjocorit, chinuit, scuipat33și, după ce‑L vor biciui, Îl vor omorî, dar a treia zi va învia.“34Ei n‑au înțeles nimic din aceste lucruri. Vorbirea aceasta era ascunsă de ei și nu pricepeau ce li se spunea.
Isus vindecă un orb lângă Ierihon
35În timp ce Isus Se apropia de Ierihon, un orb ședea lângă drum, cerșind. (Mt 20:29; Mr 10:46)36Când a auzit mulțimea trecând, orbul a întrebat ce se întâmplă.37L‑au înștiințat că trece Isus nazarineanul.38Atunci el a început să strige, zicând: – Isuse, Fiul lui David[7], ai milă de mine! (2Sa 7:12; Isa 9:6)39Cei ce mergeau înainte, îl mustrau ca să tacă, dar el striga și mai tare: – Fiul lui David, ai milă de mine!40Isus S‑a oprit și a poruncit să fie adus la El. Când orbul s‑a apropiat, Isus l‑a întrebat:41– Ce dorești să fac pentru tine? El I‑a răspuns: – Doamne, să‑mi recapăt vederea!42Isus a zis: – Recapătă‑ți vederea! Credința ta te‑a vindecat[8]. (Lu 7:50)43Deodată el și‑a recăpătat vederea și L‑a urmat pe Isus, slăvindu‑L pe Dumnezeu. Tot poporul care văzuse acest lucru a dat laudă lui Dumnezeu.
