1Now the snake was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, ‘Did God really say, “You must not eat from any tree in the garden”?’2The woman said to the snake, ‘We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,3but God did say, “You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.” ’4‘You will not certainly die,’ the snake said to the woman.5‘For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’6When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.7Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realised that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.8Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.9But the Lord God called to the man, ‘Where are you?’10He answered, ‘I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.’11And he said, ‘Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat?’12The man said, ‘The woman you put here with me – she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.’13Then the Lord God said to the woman, ‘What is this you have done?’ The woman said, ‘The snake deceived me, and I ate.’14So the Lord God said to the snake, ‘Because you have done this, ‘Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.15And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring[1] and hers; he will crush[2] your head, and you will strike his heel.’16To the woman he said, ‘I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labour you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.’17To Adam he said, ‘Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, “You must not eat from it,” ‘Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life.18It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.19By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.’20Adam[3] named his wife Eve,[4] because she would become the mother of all the living.21The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.22And the Lord God said, ‘The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live for ever.’23So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.24After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side[5] of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing to and fro to guard the way to the tree of life.
1Șarpele era mai viclean[1] decât orice vietate a câmpului, pe care o făcuse DOMNUL Dumnezeu. El i‑a zis femeii: – A zis într-adevăr Dumnezeu: „Să nu mâncați din orice pom din grădină“? (Ge 2:25)2Femeia i‑a răspuns șarpelui: – Putem să mâncăm din rodul pomilor din grădină,3dar despre pomul care este în mijlocul grădinii, Dumnezeu a zis: „Să nu mâncați din el și nici să nu‑l atingeți, ca nu cumva să muriți!“4Dar șarpele i‑a zis femeii: – Sigur nu veți muri!5Căci Dumnezeu știe că, în ziua când veți mânca din el, vi se vor deschide ochii și veți fi ca Dumnezeu[2], cunoscând binele și răul.6Când femeia a văzut că pomul era bun pentru hrană, că era o plăcere[3] pentru ochi și că pomul era de dorit[4] ca să facă pe cineva înțelept, a luat din rodul lui și a mâncat. I‑a dat și soțului ei, care era cu ea, și a mâncat și el. (Ge 2:9)7Atunci li s‑au deschis ochii la amândoi și au cunoscut că sunt goi. Astfel, ei au cusut laolaltă frunze de smochin și și‑au făcut învelitori.8Ei au auzit glasul[5] DOMNULUI Dumnezeu, Care umbla prin grădină în adierea[6] zilei, și s‑au ascuns de fața DOMNULUI Dumnezeu printre pomii din grădină. (Ge 1:2)9Dar DOMNUL Dumnezeu l‑a chemat pe Adam și i‑a zis: – Unde ești?10El a răspuns: – Am auzit glasul Tău în grădină, dar mi‑a fost teamă pentru că eram gol. De aceea m‑am ascuns.11El a zis: – Cine ți‑a spus că ești gol? Ai mâncat cumva din pomul din care ți‑am poruncit să nu mănânci?12Omul a răspuns: – Femeia pe care mi‑ai dat‑o ca să fie cu mine, ea mi‑a dat din pom și am mâncat.13Atunci DOMNUL Dumnezeu i‑a zis femeii: – Ce‑ai făcut? Femeia a răspuns: – Șarpele m‑a înșelat și am mâncat.14DOMNUL Dumnezeu i‑a zis șarpelui: „Pentru că ai făcut aceasta, blestemat ești tu între toate vitele și între toate vietățile de pe câmp. Vei umbla pe pântec și vei mânca țărână în toate zilele vieții tale.15Voi pune dușmănie între tine și femeie, între sămânța[7] ta și sămânța ei. Sămânța ei îți[8] va zdrobi capul, iar tu îi vei zdrobi călcâiul.“16Femeii i‑a zis: „Voi face ca durerile nașterii[9] să‑ți fie mari; cu durere vei naște copii. Dorința ta va fi înspre soțul tău, iar el va stăpâni peste tine.[10]“17Iar lui Adam i‑a zis: „Pentru că ai ascultat de soția ta și ai mâncat din pomul despre care îți poruncisem, zicând: «Să nu mănânci din el», blestemat este pământul din cauza ta. Cu durere îți vei lua hrana din el în toate zilele vieții tale.18Spini și mărăcini îți va da, iar tu vei mânca din plantele câmpului.19Cu sudoarea frunții tale îți vei mânca pâinea, până când te vei întoarce în pământ, pentru că din el ai fost luat. Căci țărână ești și în țărână te vei întoarce.“20Adam i‑a pus soției sale numele Eva[11], pentru că ea a fost mama tuturor celor vii.21DOMNUL Dumnezeu a făcut niște tunici din piele pentru Adam și pentru soția sa și i‑a îmbrăcat.22Atunci DOMNUL Dumnezeu a zis: „Iată, omul a ajuns ca unul dintre Noi, cunoscând binele și răul. Acum, să nu cumva să‑și întindă mâna și să ia și din Pomul Vieții ca să mănânce și să trăiască veșnic!“23Astfel, DOMNUL Dumnezeu l‑a trimis[12] pe om afară din grădina Edenului ca să lucreze pământul din care fusese luat.24După ce l‑a alungat pe om, a pus la răsăritul grădinii Edenului niște heruvimi și o sabie învăpăiată care se rotea, ca să păzească drumul spre Pomul Vieții.
