1Afterwards Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: “Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.” ’2Pharaoh said, ‘Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.’3Then they said, ‘The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword.’4But the king of Egypt said, ‘Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labour? Get back to your work!’5Then Pharaoh said, ‘Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working.’6That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and overseers in charge of the people:7‘You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw.8But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don’t reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, “Let us go and sacrifice to our God.”9Make the work harder for the people so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies.’10Then the slave drivers and the overseers went out and said to the people, ‘This is what Pharaoh says: “I will not give you any more straw.11Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.” ’12So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw.13The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, ‘Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw.’14And Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed, demanding, ‘Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?’15Then the Israelite overseers went and appealed to Pharaoh: ‘Why have you treated your servants this way?16Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, “Make bricks!” Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people.’17Pharaoh said, ‘Lazy, that’s what you are – lazy! That is why you keep saying, “Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.”18Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks.’19The Israelite overseers realised they were in trouble when they were told, ‘You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day.’20When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them,21and they said, ‘May the Lord look on you and judge you! You have made us obnoxious to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.’
God promises deliverance
22Moses returned to the Lord and said, ‘Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me?23Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.’
1După aceea, Moise și Aaron s‑au dus la Faraon și i‑au zis: – Așa vorbește DOMNUL, Dumnezeul lui Israel: „Lasă‑Mi poporul să plece ca să țină o sărbătoare pentru Mine în pustie.“2Dar Faraon a răspuns: – Cine este DOMNUL ca să ascult de glasul Lui și să‑l las pe Israel să plece? Nu‑L cunosc pe DOMNUL și nu‑l voi lăsa pe Israel să plece.3Atunci ei au zis: – Dumnezeul evreilor S‑a întâlnit cu noi. Lasă‑ne, te rugăm, să mergem cale de trei zile în pustie, ca să aducem jertfe DOMNULUI, Dumnezeul nostru, căci altfel El va veni peste noi cu molimă și cu sabie.4Dar regele Egiptului le‑a zis: – Moise și Aaron, de ce abateți poporul de la lucrul lui? Întoarceți‑vă la treburile voastre!5Apoi Faraon a zis: – Iată cât de numeros este acum poporul țării, și voi vreți să‑l opriți de la lucru!6În aceeași zi, Faraon le‑a poruncit asupritorilor[1] poporului și supraveghetorilor acestuia, zicând: (Ex 3:7)7„Să nu mai dați poporului paie pentru facerea cărămizilor, ca mai înainte! Să se ducă ei înșiși să‑și adune paie.8Totuși, veți cere de la ei același număr de cărămizi pe care îl făceau înainte. Nu veți scădea nimic din el, căci sunt leneși. De aceea strigă, zicând: «Lasă‑ne să plecăm ca să aducem jertfe Dumnezeului nostru!»9Să li se îngreuneze lucrul acestor oameni, ca să se ocupe de el și să nu ia seama la cuvinte mincinoase.“10Asupritorii poporului și supraveghetorii lui au ieșit și au anunțat poporul, zicând: „Așa vorbește Faraon: «Nu vă mai dau paie.11Mergeți voi înșivă și adunați‑vă paie de oriunde găsiți, însă să știți că norma voastră nu va fi micșorată.»“12Poporul s‑a răspândit prin toată țara Egiptului ca să adune miriște în loc de paie.13Asupritorii îi grăbeau, zicând: „Terminați‑vă lucrările, norma zilnică, la fel ca atunci când erau paie!“14Supraveghetorii fiilor lui Israel, care fuseseră puși responsabili peste ei de către asupritorii numiți de Faraon, erau bătuți și întrebați: „De ce n‑ați terminat ieri și astăzi norma de cărămizi pe care‑o făceați înainte?“15Atunci supraveghetorii fiilor lui Israel au venit și s‑au plâns lui Faraon, zicând: – De ce te porți așa cu robii tăi?16Nu li se mai dau paie robilor tăi, și totuși ni se spune: „Faceți cărămizi!“ Iată că robii tăi sunt bătuți, dar vina este a poporului tău.17Faraon a răspuns: – Leneșilor! Asta sunteți, niște leneși! De aceea ziceți: „Lasă‑ne să plecăm ca să aducem jertfe DOMNULUI.“18Și acum, plecați și munciți! Nu vi se vor mai da paie, dar va trebui să faceți aceeași normă de cărămizi.19Supraveghetorii fiilor lui Israel și‑au dat seama că sunt în necaz când li s‑a spus: „Nu vi se va micșora norma zilnică de cărămizi!“20Când au ieșit de la Faraon, s‑au întâlnit cu Moise și cu Aaron, care stăteau acolo ca să‑i întâmpine.21Ei le‑au zis: „DOMNUL să Se uite la voi și să judece, pentru că ne‑ați făcut de nesuferit în ochii lui Faraon și în ochii slujitorilor săi, dându‑le sabia în mână ca să ne ucidă.“22Atunci Moise s‑a întors la DOMNUL și L‑a întrebat: – Stăpâne, de ce ai adus rău peste acest popor? De ce m‑ai trimis?23De când am venit și i‑am vorbit lui Faraon în Numele Tău, el a făcut și mai mult rău poporului, iar Tu nu Ți‑ai eliberat nicidecum poporul.
