1And Samuel’s word came to all Israel. Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines at Aphek.2The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield.3When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, ‘Why did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh, so that he may go with us and save us from the hand of our enemies.’4So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim. And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.5When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout that the ground shook.6Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, ‘What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew camp?’ When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp,7the Philistines were afraid. ‘A god has[1] come into the camp,’ they said. ‘Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before.8We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness.9Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Be men, and fight!’10So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers.11The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.
Death of Eli
12That same day a Benjaminite ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust on his head.13When he arrived, there was Eli sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.14Eli heard the outcry and asked, ‘What is the meaning of this uproar?’ The man hurried over to Eli,15who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes had failed so that he could not see.16He told Eli, ‘I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.’ Eli asked, ‘What happened, my son?’17The man who brought the news replied, ‘Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.’18When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backwards off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led[2] Israel for forty years.19His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labour and gave birth, but was overcome by her labour pains.20As she was dying, the women attending her said, ‘Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.’ But she did not respond or pay any attention.21She named the boy Ichabod,[3] saying, ‘The Glory has departed from Israel’ – because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband.22She said, ‘The Glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.’

Acolo, împreună cu Chivotul Legământului cu Dumnezeu, se aflau cei doi fii ai lui Eli, Hofni și Fineas.5Când a intrat Chivotul Legământului DOMNULUI în tabără, tot Israelul a scos un strigăt puternic, încât a răsunat pământul.6Auzind răsunetul strigătului, filistenii au zis: „Ce înseamnă răsunetul acestui strigăt puternic, care vine din tabăra evreilor?“ Când au aflat că sosise Chivotul DOMNULUI în tabără,7filistenii s‑au temut, căci ziceau că a venit Dumnezeu în tabără. Ei au zis: „Vai de noi, căci n‑a mai fost așa ceva înainte!8Vai de noi! Cine ne va elibera din mâna acestor dumnezei măreți? Aceștia sunt dumnezeii care i‑au lovit pe egipteni cu tot felul de plăgi în deșert.9Fiți tari, filistenilor! Îmbărbătați‑vă, ca nu cumva să ajungeți să le slujiți evreilor așa cum v‑au slujit ei vouă. Îmbărbătați‑vă și luptați!“10Astfel, filistenii s‑au luptat, iar Israel a fost înfrânt, fiecare bărbat dând bir cu fugiții. Pierderea a fost foarte mare, din Israel căzând pe câmpul de luptă treizeci de mii de pedestrași.11Chivotul lui Dumnezeu a fost capturat, iar cei doi fii ai lui Eli, Hofni și Fineas, au murit.
Moartea lui Eli
12În aceeași zi, un beniamit a fugit de pe câmpul de luptă și a venit la Șilo. Hainele lui erau sfâșiate, iar pe cap avea țărână.13Când a sosit el, Eli ședea pe scaunul său, așteptând lângă drum, căci inima lui tremura din cauza Chivotului lui Dumnezeu. Când bărbatul a intrat în cetate și a dat de veste, întreaga cetate a strigat.14Când a auzit Eli vuietul, a zis: „Ce înseamnă vuietul acesta?“ Bărbatul a venit repede și l‑a înștiințat pe Eli.15Eli era în vârstă de nouăzeci și opt de ani. Ochii îi erau țepeni și nu mai putea să vadă.16Bărbatul i‑a zis lui Eli: – Tocmai am sosit de pe câmpul de luptă. Astăzi am fugit de acolo. Eli a întrebat: – Ce s‑a întâmplat, fiule?17Cel care aducea veștile a răspuns: – Israel a fugit dinaintea filistenilor, și poporul a suferit o mare înfrângere. De asemenea, cei doi fii ai tăi, Hofni și Fineas, au murit, iar Chivotul lui Dumnezeu a fost capturat.18De îndată ce a amintit el de Chivotul lui Dumnezeu, Eli a căzut de pe scaunul său pe spate, lângă poartă, și‑a rupt gâtul și a murit, pentru că era un om bătrân și greu. Eli a judecat Israelul timp de patruzeci de ani.19Nora sa, soția lui Fineas, era însărcinată și urma să nască. Când a auzit ea vestea despre capturarea Chivotului lui Dumnezeu și despre moartea socrului și a soțului ei, s‑a încovoiat și a născut pentru că o apucaseră durerile nașterii.20În timp ce era pe moarte, femeile care stăteau lângă ea i‑au spus: „Nu te teme, căci ai născut un fiu!“ Însă ea n‑a răspuns și n‑a luat în seamă ce i se spunea.21L‑a numit pe copil I‑Kabod[3], zicând: „S‑a dus slava din Israel“ – spunea acest lucru din cauza capturării Chivotului lui Dumnezeu și din cauza socrului și a soțului ei.22Ea a zis: „S‑a dus slava din Israel, căci Chivotul lui Dumnezeu a fost capturat.“
