New International Version

1 The Lord detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favour with him. 2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. 3 The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity. 4 Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death. 5 The righteousness of the blameless makes their paths straight, but the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness. 6 The righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the unfaithful are trapped by evil desires. 7 Hopes placed in mortals die with them; all the promise of^[1] their power comes to nothing. 8 The righteous person is rescued from trouble, and it falls on the wicked instead. 9 With their mouths the godless destroy their neighbours, but through knowledge the righteous escape. 10 When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices; when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy. 11 Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed. 12 Whoever derides their neighbour has no sense, but the one who has understanding holds their tongue. 13 A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret. 14 For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisors. 15 Whoever puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer, but whoever refuses to shake hands in pledge is safe. 16 A kind-hearted woman gains honour, but ruthless men gain only wealth. 17 Those who are kind benefit themselves, but the cruel bring ruin on themselves. 18 A wicked person earns deceptive wages, but the one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward. 19 Truly the righteous attain life, but whoever pursues evil finds death. 20 The Lord detests those whose hearts are perverse, but he delights in those whose ways are blameless. 21 Be sure of this: the wicked will not go unpunished, but those who are righteous will go free. 22 Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion. 23 The desire of the righteous ends only in good, but the hope of the wicked only in wrath. 24 One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. 25 A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. 26 People curse the one who hoards grain, but they pray God’s blessing on the one who is willing to sell. 27 Whoever seeks good finds favour, but evil comes to one who searches for it. 28 Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf. 29 Whoever brings ruin on their family will inherit only wind, and the fool will be servant to the wise. 30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and the one who is wise saves lives. 31 If the righteous receive their due on earth, how much more the ungodly and the sinner!

1 La bilancia falsa è un abominio per il Signore, ma il peso giusto gli è gradito. 2 Venuta la superbia, viene anche l’infamia, ma la saggezza è con gli umili. 3 L’integrità degli uomini retti li guida, ma la perversità dei perfidi è la loro rovina. 4 Le ricchezze non servono a nulla nel giorno dell’ira, ma la giustizia salva dalla morte. 5 La giustizia dell’uomo integro gli appiana la via, ma l’empio cade per la sua empietà. 6 La giustizia degli uomini retti li libera, ma i perfidi restano presi nella loro malizia. 7 Quando un empio muore, la sua speranza perisce, e l’attesa degli empi è annientata. 8 Il giusto è salvato dalla tribolazione, e l’empio ne prende il posto. 9 Con la sua bocca l’ipocrita rovina il suo prossimo, ma i giusti sono liberati grazie alla loro scienza. 10 Quando i giusti prosperano, la città gioisce; quando periscono gli empi sono grida di esultanza. 11 Con la benedizione dei giusti si costruisce una città, ma con la bocca degli empi essa viene diroccata. 12 Chi disprezza il prossimo è privo di senno, ma l’uomo intelligente tace. 13 Chi va sparlando svela i segreti, ma chi ha lo spirito leale tiene celata la cosa. 14 Quando manca una saggia direzione il popolo cade; nel gran numero dei consiglieri sta la salvezza. 15 Chi si fa garante per un altro ne soffre danno, ma chi odia farsi garante per la condotta altrui è tranquillo. 16 La donna che ha grazia riceve onore, e gli uomini forti ottengono la ricchezza. 17 L’uomo buono fa del bene a se stesso, ma il crudele tortura la sua propria carne. 18 L’empio fa un’opera illusoria, ma chi semina giustizia ha una ricompensa sicura. 19 Così la giustizia conduce alla vita, ma chi va dietro al male si avvia verso la morte. 20 I perversi di cuore sono un abominio per il Signore, ma gli integri nella loro condotta gli sono graditi. 21 No, certo, il malvagio non rimarrà impunito, ma la discendenza dei giusti scamperà. 22 Una donna bella, ma senza giudizio, è un anello d’oro nel grifo di un porco. 23 Il desiderio dei giusti è il bene soltanto, ma la prospettiva degli empi è l’ira. 24 C’è chi offre liberalmente e diventa più ricco, e c’è chi risparmia più del giusto e non fa che impoverire. 25 Chi è benefico sarà nell’abbondanza, e chi annaffia sarà egli pure annaffiato. 26 Chi fa incetta del grano è maledetto dal popolo, ma la benedizione è sul capo di chi lo vende. 27 Chi si adopera per il bene si attira benevolenza, ma chi cerca il male, male lo colpirà. 28 Chi confida nelle sue ricchezze cadrà, ma i giusti rinverdiranno come fogliame. 29 Chi getta lo scompiglio in casa sua erediterà vento, e lo stolto sarà lo schiavo di chi ha il cuore saggio. 30 Il frutto del giusto è un albero di vita, e il saggio attira a sé le persone. 31 Ecco, il giusto riceve la sua retribuzione sulla terra, quanto più l’empio e il peccatore!
