1Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land that the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors.2Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.3He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.4Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.5Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.6Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him.7For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land – a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills;8a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig-trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey;9a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.10When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.11Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.12Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down,13and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied,14then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.15He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.16He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you.17You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.’18But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.19If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.20Like the nations the Lord destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the Lord your God.

He wanted to test you to know what was in your hearts. He wanted to see whether you would obey his commands.3He took your pride away. He let you go hungry. Then he gave you manna to eat. You and your parents had never even known anything about manna before. He tested you to teach you that man doesn’t live only on bread. He also lives on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.4Your clothes didn’t wear out during these 40 years. Your feet didn’t swell.5Here is what I want you to know in your hearts. The LORD your God guides you, just as parents guide their children.6Obey the commands of the LORD your God. Live as he wants you to live. Have respect for him.7The LORD your God is bringing you into a good land. It has brooks, streams and deep springs of water. Those springs flow in its valleys and hills.8It has wheat, barley, vines, fig-trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey.9There is plenty of food in that land. You will have everything you need. Its rocks have iron in them. And you can dig copper out of its hills.10When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God. Praise him for the good land he has given you.11Make sure you don’t forget the LORD your God. Don’t fail to obey his commands, laws and rules. I’m giving them to you today.12But suppose you don’t obey his commands. And suppose you have plenty to eat. You build fine houses and live in them.13The number of your herds and flocks increases. You also get more and more silver and gold. And everything you have multiplies.14Then your hearts will become proud. And you will forget the LORD your God. The LORD brought you out of Egypt. That’s the land where you were slaves.15He led you through that huge and terrible desert. It was a dry land. It didn’t have any water. It had poisonous snakes and scorpions. The LORD gave you water out of solid rock.16He gave you manna to eat in the desert. Your people had never even known anything about manna before. The LORD took your pride away. He tested you. He did it so that things would go well with you in the end.17You might say to yourself, ‘My power and my strong hands have made me rich.’18But remember the LORD your God. He gives you the ability to produce wealth. That shows he stands by the terms of the covenant he made with you. He promised it to your people of long ago. And he’s still faithful to his covenant today.19Don’t forget the LORD your God. Don’t serve other gods. Don’t worship them and bow down to them. I am a witness against you today that if you do, you will certainly be destroyed.20You will be destroyed just like the nations the LORD your God is destroying to make room for you. That’s what will happen if you don’t obey him.

Und er speiste dich mit dem Man[1], das du nicht kanntest und das deine Väter nicht kannten, um dich erkennen zu lassen, dass der Mensch nicht von Brot allein lebt. Sondern von allem, was aus dem Mund des HERRN hervorgeht, lebt der Mensch. (Ex 16:3; Ex 16:15; De 29:5; De 32:47; Mt 4:4; Joh 6:31)4Deine Kleidung[2] an dir ist nicht verschlissen, und dein Fuß ist nicht geschwollen diese vierzig Jahre. (Ex 16:35; De 2:7; Heb 3:9)5So erkenne in deinem Herzen, dass der HERR, dein Gott, dich erzieht, wie ein Mann seinen Sohn erzieht[3]! (De 1:31; Job 5:17; Pr 3:11; Heb 12:5)6Halte nun die Gebote des HERRN, deines Gottes, indem du auf seinen Wegen gehst und ihn fürchtest. (De 5:29)7Denn der HERR, dein Gott, bringt dich in ein gutes Land, ein Land von Wasserbächen, Quellen und Gewässern[4], die in der Ebene und im Gebirge entspringen; (De 11:10; Ps 104:10)8ein Land des Weizens und der Gerste, der Weinstöcke, Feigenbäume und Granatbäume; ein Land mit ölreichen Olivenbäumen und Honig; (Nu 13:23; De 6:3; 2Ki 18:32; Jer 2:7)9ein Land, in dem du nicht in Armut ⟨dein⟩ Brot essen wirst, in dem es dir an nichts fehlen wird; ein Land, dessen Steine Eisen sind und aus dessen Bergen du Kupfer hauen wirst. (Jud 18:10; 1Ch 22:3)10Und du wirst essen und satt werden, und du sollst den HERRN, deinen Gott, für das gute Land preisen[5], das er dir gegeben hat. (De 4:26; De 11:16; 1Sa 12:25)20Wie die Nationen, die der HERR vor euch umkommen lässt, so werdet ihr umkommen, dafür, dass ihr auf die Stimme des HERRN, eures Gottes, nicht hört.
