1Then we turned back and set out towards the wilderness along the route to the Red Sea,[1] as the Lord had directed me. For a long time we made our way around the hill country of Seir.2Then the Lord said to me,3‘You have made your way around this hill country long enough; now turn north.4Give the people these orders: “You are about to pass through the territory of your relatives the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, but be very careful.5Do not provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, not even enough to put your foot on. I have given Esau the hill country of Seir as his own.6You are to pay them in silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.” ’7The Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything.8So we went on past our relatives the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We turned from the Arabah road, which comes up from Elath and Ezion Geber, and travelled along the desert road of Moab.9Then the Lord said to me, ‘Do not harass the Moabites or provoke them to war, for I will not give you any part of their land. I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as a possession.’10(The Emites used to live there – a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites.11Like the Anakites, they too were considered Rephaites, but the Moabites called them Emites.12Horites used to live in Seir, but the descendants of Esau drove them out. They destroyed the Horites from before them and settled in their place, just as Israel did in the land the Lord gave them as their possession.)13And the Lord said, ‘Now get up and cross the Zered Valley.’ So we crossed the valley.14Thirty-eight years passed from the time we left Kadesh Barnea until we crossed the Zered Valley. By then, that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them.15The Lord’s hand was against them until he had completely eliminated them from the camp.16Now when the last of these fighting men among the people had died,17the Lord said to me,18‘Today you are to pass by the region of Moab at Ar.19When you come to the Ammonites, do not harass them or provoke them to war, for I will not give you possession of any land belonging to the Ammonites. I have given it as a possession to the descendants of Lot.’20(That too was considered a land of the Rephaites, who used to live there; but the Ammonites called them Zamzummites.21They were a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites. The Lord destroyed them from before the Ammonites, who drove them out and settled in their place.22The Lord had done the same for the descendants of Esau, who lived in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them. They drove them out and have lived in their place to this day.23And as for the Avvites who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorites coming out from Caphtor[2] destroyed them and settled in their place.)
Defeat of Sihon king of Heshbon
24‘Set out now and cross the Arnon Gorge. See, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his country. Begin to take possession of it and engage him in battle.25This very day I will begin to put the terror and fear of you on all the nations under heaven. They will hear reports of you and will tremble and be in anguish because of you.’26From the Desert of Kedemoth I sent messengers to Sihon king of Heshbon offering peace and saying,27‘Let us pass through your country. We will stay on the main road; we will not turn aside to the right or to the left.28Sell us food to eat and water to drink for their price in silver. Only let us pass through on foot –29as the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, did for us – until we cross the Jordan into the land the Lord our God is giving us.’30But Sihon king of Heshbon refused to let us pass through. For the Lord your God had made his spirit stubborn and his heart obstinate in order to give him into your hands, as he has now done.31The Lord said to me, ‘See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his country over to you. Now begin to conquer and possess his land.’32When Sihon and all his army came out to meet us in battle at Jahaz,33the Lord our God delivered him over to us and we struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army.34At that time we took all his towns and completely destroyed[3] them – men, women and children. We left no survivors.35But the livestock and the plunder from the towns we had captured we carried off for ourselves.36From Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the gorge, even as far as Gilead, not one town was too strong for us. The Lord our God gave us all of them.37But in accordance with the command of the Lord our God, you did not encroach on any of the land of the Ammonites, neither the land along the course of the Jabbok nor that around the towns in the hills.

He watched over you when you travelled through that huge desert. For these 40 years the LORD your God has been with you. So you have had everything you need.8We went on past our relatives. They are from the family line of Esau. They live in Seir. We turned away from the Arabah Valley road. It comes up from Elath and Ezion Geber. We travelled along the desert road of Moab.9Then the LORD said to me, ‘Do not attack the Moabites. Do not even make them angry. If you do, they will go to war against you. I will not give you any part of their land. I have given Moab to the people in the family line of Lot. I have given it to them as their own.’10The Emites used to live there. They were strong people. There were large numbers of them. They were as tall as the Anakites.11Like the Anakites, they too were thought of as Rephaites. But the Moabites called them Emites.12The Horites used to live in Seir. But the people of Esau drove them out. They destroyed the Horites to make room for themselves. Then they settled in their territory. They did just as Israel has done in the land the LORD gave them as their own.13The LORD said, ‘Now get up. Go across the Zered Valley.’ So we went across it.14Between the time we left Kadesh Barnea and the time we went across the Zered Valley, 38 years had passed. By then, all the fighting men who had been in our camp from the beginning had died. The LORD had warned them that it would happen.15He used his power against them until he had got rid of all of them. Not one was left in the camp.16Finally, the last of the fighting men among the people died.17Then the LORD said to me,18‘Today you must pass near the border of Moab. Moab is also called Ar.19When you come to the Ammonites, do not attack them. Do not make them angry. If you do, they will go to war against you. I will not give you any of their land as your own. I have given it to the people in the family line of Lot. I have given it to them as their own.’20That land was also thought of as a land of the Rephaites. They used to live there. But the Ammonites called them Zamzummites.21The Rephaites were strong people. There were large numbers of them. They were as tall as the Anakites. The LORD destroyed the Rephaites to make room for the Ammonites. So the Ammonites drove them out. Then they settled in the territory of the Rephaites.22The LORD had done the same thing for the people of Esau. They lived in Seir. The LORD destroyed the Horites to make room for Esau’s people. They drove the Horites out. So the people of Esau have lived in Seir in the territory of the Horites to this very day.23The Avvites lived in villages as far away as Gaza. But people came from Crete and destroyed the Avvites. Then the people of Crete made their home in the territory of the Avvites.
Israel wins the battle over Sihon
24The LORD said, ‘Start out and go across the valley of the River Arnon. I have handed Sihon over to you. He is the Amorite king of Heshbon. I have also given you his country. Begin to take it as your own. Go to war against him.25This very day I will bring fear and terror on all the nations because of you. They will hear about you. They will tremble with fear. Pain and suffering will grip them because of you.’26I sent messengers from the Desert of Kedemoth. I told them to go to Sihon, the king of Heshbon. They offered him peace. They said,27‘Let us pass through your country. We’ll stay on the main road. We won’t turn off it to one side or the other.28We’ll pay you the right amount of silver for food to eat and water to drink. Just let us walk through your country.29The people of Esau, who live in Seir, allowed us to do that. The people of Moab, who live in Ar, also allowed us to do it. So let us walk through until we go across the River Jordan. Then we’ll be able to go into the land the LORD our God is giving us.’30But Sihon, the king of Heshbon, refused to let us walk through. The LORD your God had made him stubborn in his heart and spirit. The LORD wanted to hand him over to you. And that’s exactly what he has done.31The LORD said to me, ‘I have begun to hand Sihon and his country over to you. So begin the battle to take his land as your own.’32Sihon and his whole army came out to fight against us at Jahaz.33But the LORD our God handed him over to us. We struck him down together with his sons and his whole army.34At that time we took all his towns. We completely destroyed them. We killed all the men, women and children. We didn’t leave any of them alive.35But we took for ourselves the livestock and everything else from the towns we had captured.36Not a single town was too strong for us. That includes all the towns from Aroer on the rim of the River Arnon valley all the way to Gilead. It also includes the town in the valley. The LORD our God gave us all of them.37And you obeyed the LORD’s command. You didn’t go near any part of the land of the Ammonites. That includes the land along the River Jabbok. It also includes the land around the towns in the hills.

Denn das Gebirge Seïr habe ich dem Esau zum Besitz gegeben. (Ge 36:8; Eze 35:2; Ac 7:5)6Nahrung sollt ihr für Geld von ihnen kaufen, damit ihr zu essen habt, und auch Wasser sollt ihr für Geld von ihnen kaufen, damit ihr zu trinken habt. (Nu 20:19)7Denn der HERR, dein Gott, hat dich in allem Tun deiner Hand gesegnet. Er gab acht auf[1] deine Wanderung durch diese große Wüste: Diese vierzig Jahre ist der HERR, dein Gott, mit dir gewesen; es hat dir an nichts gemangelt. (Ge 39:3; Ex 16:35; Nu 22:12; De 8:2; De 29:4; Ne 9:21; Jer 2:2; Ho 13:5; Am 2:10)8Und wir zogen von unseren Brüdern, den Söhnen Esau, die in Seïr wohnen, weiter ⟨weg⟩ von der Arabastraße[2], von Elat und von Ezjon-Geber und wandten uns und zogen auf dem Weg zur Wüste Moabs. (Nu 20:21; Nu 33:35; Jud 11:18; 2Ki 14:22)9Da sprach der HERR zu mir: Befehde Moab nicht und lass dich nicht in einen Krieg mit ihnen ein, denn ich werde dir von seinem Land keinen Besitz geben! Denn Ar habe ich den Söhnen Lot zum Besitz gegeben. – (Ge 19:37; Nu 21:15; Jud 11:15; Isa 15:1)10Früher wohnten die Emiter darin, ein großes und zahlreiches und hochgewachsenes Volk wie die Enakiter. (Ge 14:5; De 1:28)11Auch sie werden für Riesen[3] gehalten wie die Enakiter; die Moabiter aber nennen sie Emiter. (Ge 6:4; 2Sa 21:16)12Und in Seïr wohnten früher die Horiter. Aber die Söhne Esau verdrängten sie und vernichteten sie vor sich her und wohnten an ihrer Stelle, so wie Israel es mit dem Land seines Besitzes getan hat, das der HERR ihnen gegeben hat. – (Ge 36:20)13Nun macht euch auf und zieht über den Bach[4] Sered! Und wir zogen über den Bach Sered. (Nu 21:12)14Die Tage aber, die wir von Kadesch-Barnea wanderten, bis wir über den Bach Sered zogen, ⟨betrugen⟩ 38 Jahre, bis die Generation der kriegstüchtigen Männer[5] aus dem Lager vollständig aufgerieben war, so wie der HERR ihnen geschworen hatte. (Nu 1:1; Nu 26:64; De 1:35)15Und zwar war die Hand des HERRN gegen sie, um sie aus dem Lager vollständig auszutilgen. (Ps 78:33; 1Co 10:5)16Und es geschah, als die kriegstüchtigen Männer[6] aus der Mitte des Volkes vollständig weggestorben waren,17da redete der HERR zu mir und sprach:18Du wirst heute das Gebiet von Moab, von Ar, durchziehen (Nu 21:13)19und dich den Söhnen Ammon nähern, ⟨bis du ihrer Grenze⟩ gegenüber⟨stehst⟩. Du sollst sie nicht befehden und dich nicht in Streit mit ihnen einlassen, denn ich werde dir von dem Land der Söhne Ammon keinen Besitz geben! Denn ich habe es den Söhnen Lot zum Besitz gegeben. – (Ge 19:38; De 2:37; Jos 13:10; Jud 11:15; 2Ch 20:10; Isa 15:1)20Auch dieses wird für ein Land der Riesen[7] gehalten. Riesen wohnten früher darin, und die Ammoniter nennen sie Samsummiter: (Ge 14:5)21ein großes und zahlreiches und hochgewachsenes Volk, wie die Enakiter. Und der HERR vernichtete sie vor ihnen, und sie verdrängten sie und wohnten an ihrer Stelle,22so wie er ⟨es⟩ für die Söhne Esau getan hat, die in Seïr wohnen, vor denen er die Horiter vernichtete, sodass sie sie verdrängten und an ihrer Stelle wohnten bis auf diesen Tag. (Ge 36:20)23Und ⟨was⟩ die Awiter ⟨betrifft⟩, die in Dörfern bis Gaza hin wohnten; die Kaftoriter, die aus Kaftor ausgezogen waren, haben sie vernichtet und wohnten an ihrer Stelle. – (Ge 10:14; Ge 10:19; Jos 10:41; Jos 11:22; Jos 13:3; Jos 15:47; Jud 1:18; Am 9:7)24Macht euch auf, brecht auf[8] und zieht über den Fluss Arnon! Siehe, ich habe den Amoriter Sihon, den König von Heschbon, und sein Land in deine Hand gegeben. Fang an, nimm ⟨es⟩ in Besitz und lass dich in einen Krieg mit ihm ein! (Nu 21:12)25An diesem Tag will ich anfangen, Schrecken und Furcht vor dir auf die Völker unter dem ganzen Himmel zu legen: Wenn sie die Nachricht von dir hören, werden sie vor dir zittern und beben. (Nu 22:3; De 11:25; De 28:10; Jos 10:2)26Da sandte ich Boten aus der Wüste Kedemot an Sihon, den König von Heschbon, mit Worten des Friedens und ließ ⟨ihm⟩ sagen: (De 20:10; Jos 13:18)27Ich möchte durch dein Land ziehen auf der Straße! ⟨Nur⟩ auf der Straße will ich gehen, ich will weder zur Rechten noch zur Linken abweichen. (Nu 21:21)28Nahrung sollst du mir für Geld verkaufen, dass ich esse, und Wasser sollst du mir für Geld geben, dass ich trinke. Ich will nur hindurchziehen mit meinen Füßen – (Nu 20:17)29wie mir die Söhne Esau getan haben, die in Seïr wohnen, und die Moabiter, die in Ar wohnen –, bis ich über den Jordan hinüberziehe in das Land, das der HERR, unser Gott, uns gibt. (De 1:8; De 23:4)30Aber Sihon, der König von Heschbon, wollte uns nicht bei sich durchziehen lassen. Denn der HERR, dein Gott, hatte seinen Geist verhärtet und sein Herz verstockt, um ihn in deine Hand zu geben, so wie es heute ist. (Ex 4:21; Ex 7:14; Nu 21:23; Jos 11:20; 2Ch 10:15)31Und der HERR sprach zu mir: Siehe, ich habe begonnen, Sihon und sein Land vor dir dahinzugeben. Fang an, nimm es in Besitz, damit dir sein Land gehört[9]! (De 3:1; Jos 12:1)32Und Sihon zog zum Kampf aus, uns entgegen nach Jahaz, er und all sein Volk. (Nu 21:23)33Aber der HERR, unser Gott, gab ihn vor uns dahin; und wir schlugen ihn und seine Söhne und all sein Volk. (Nu 21:24; De 29:6)34In jener Zeit nahmen wir alle seine Städte ein, und wir vollstreckten den Bann an jeder Stadt, an Männern, Frauen und Kindern; wir ließen keinen übrig, der entkam[10]. (Jos 6:21; Jos 8:26; Jos 10:28)35Nur das Vieh erbeuteten wir für uns und die Beute der Städte, die wir einnahmen. (De 20:14; Jos 8:2)36Von Aroër, das am Ufer des Flusses Arnon ⟨liegt⟩, und von der Stadt, die im Flusstal[11] ⟨liegt⟩, bis Gilead gab es keine Stadt, die uns zu stark[12] gewesen wäre; alles gab der HERR, unser Gott, vor uns dahin. (Jos 21:44; Jud 11:26)37Nur dem Land der Söhne Ammon, dem ganzen Gebiet am Fluss Jabbok[13], hast du dich nicht genähert noch den Städten des Gebirges, nach allem[14], was der HERR, unser Gott, geboten hatte.
