1Then I saw ‘a new heaven and a new earth,’ for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. (Isa 65:17)2I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling-place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.4“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death” or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’ (Isa 25:8)5He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’6He said to me: ‘It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.7Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children.8But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practise magic arts, the idolaters and all liars – they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulphur. This is the second death.’
The new Jerusalem, the bride of the Lamb
9One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, ‘Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.’10And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.11It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.12It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel.13There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west.14The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.15The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls.16The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia[1] in length, and as wide and high as it is long.17The angel measured the wall using human measurement, and it was 144 cubits[2] thick.[3]18The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass.19The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald,20the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.[4]21The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.22I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.23The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.24The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendour into it.25On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there.26The glory and honour of the nations will be brought into it.27Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

(Isa 35:10; Re 7:17)5Und der auf dem Thron saß, sprach: Siehe, ich mache alles neu! Und er spricht: Schreibe, denn diese Worte sind wahrhaftig und gewiss! (Isa 43:19; 2Co 5:17)6Und er sprach zu mir: Es ist geschehen. Ich bin das A und das O, der Anfang und das Ende. Ich will dem Durstigen geben von der Quelle des lebendigen Wassers umsonst. (Re 1:8; Re 22:13; Re 22:17)7Wer überwindet, der wird dies ererben, und ich werde sein Gott sein und er wird mein Sohn sein. (Ro 8:17)8Die Feigen aber und Ungläubigen und Frevler und Mörder und Hurer und Zauberer und Götzendiener und alle Lügner, deren Teil wird in dem Pfuhl sein, der mit Feuer und Schwefel brennt; das ist der zweite Tod. (Ga 5:19; Re 17:5; Re 22:15)9Und es kam zu mir einer von den sieben Engeln, die die sieben Schalen hatten, gefüllt mit den letzten sieben Plagen, und redete mit mir und sprach: Komm, ich will dir die Braut zeigen, die Frau des Lammes. (Re 15:1)10Und er führte mich hin im Geist auf einen großen und hohen Berg und zeigte mir die heilige Stadt Jerusalem herniederkommen aus dem Himmel von Gott,11die hatte die Herrlichkeit Gottes; ihr Leuchten war gleich dem alleredelsten Stein, einem Jaspis, klar wie Kristall; (Isa 58:8; Isa 60:1)12sie hatte eine große und hohe Mauer und hatte zwölf Tore und auf den Toren zwölf Engel und Namen darauf geschrieben, nämlich die Namen der zwölf Stämme der Israeliten: (Eze 48:30)13von Osten drei Tore, von Norden drei Tore, von Süden drei Tore, von Westen drei Tore.14Und die Mauer der Stadt hatte zwölf Grundsteine und auf ihnen die zwölf Namen der zwölf Apostel des Lammes. (Eph 2:20)15Und der mit mir redete, hatte einen Messstab, ein goldenes Rohr, um die Stadt zu messen und ihre Tore und ihre Mauer. (Eze 40:3; Re 11:1)16Und die Stadt ist viereckig angelegt und ihre Länge ist so groß wie die Breite. Und er maß die Stadt mit dem Rohr: zwölftausend Stadien. Die Länge und die Breite und die Höhe der Stadt sind gleich.17Und er maß ihre Mauer: hundertvierundvierzig Ellen nach Menschenmaß, das der Engel gebrauchte.18Und der Kern der Mauer war aus Jaspis und die Stadt aus reinem Gold, gleich reinem Glas. (Isa 54:11)19Die Grundsteine der Mauer um die Stadt waren geschmückt mit allerlei Edelsteinen. Der erste Grundstein war ein Jaspis, der zweite ein Saphir, der dritte ein Chalzedon, der vierte ein Smaragd,20der fünfte ein Sardonyx, der sechste ein Sarder, der siebente ein Chrysolith, der achte ein Beryll, der neunte ein Topas, der zehnte ein Chrysopras, der elfte ein Hyazinth, der zwölfte ein Amethyst.21Und die zwölf Tore waren zwölf Perlen, ein jedes Tor war aus einer einzigen Perle, und die Straße der Stadt war aus reinem Gold wie durchscheinendes Glas.22Und ich sah keinen Tempel darin; denn der Herr, der allmächtige Gott, ist ihr Tempel, er und das Lamm.23Und die Stadt bedarf keiner Sonne noch des Mondes, dass sie ihr scheinen; denn die Herrlichkeit Gottes erleuchtet sie, und ihre Leuchte ist das Lamm. (Isa 60:3; Isa 60:5; Isa 60:11; Isa 60:19)24Und die Völker werden wandeln in ihrem Licht; und die Könige auf Erden werden ihre Herrlichkeit in sie bringen.25Und ihre Tore werden nicht verschlossen am Tage; denn da wird keine Nacht sein. (Zec 14:7)26Und man wird die Herrlichkeit und die Ehre der Völker in sie bringen.27Und nichts Unreines wird hineinkommen und keiner, der Gräuel tut und Lüge, sondern die geschrieben sind in dem Lebensbuch des Lammes.
