1In the sixth year, in the sixth month on the fifth day, while I was sitting in my house and the elders of Judah were sitting before me, the hand of the Sovereign Lord came on me there.2I looked, and I saw a figure like that of a man.[1] From what appeared to be his waist down he was like fire, and from there up his appearance was as bright as glowing metal.3He stretched out what looked like a hand and took me by the hair of my head. The Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and in visions of God he took me to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the north gate of the inner court, where the idol that provokes to jealousy stood.4And there before me was the glory of the God of Israel, as in the vision I had seen in the plain.5Then he said to me, ‘Son of man, look towards the north.’ So I looked, and in the entrance north of the gate of the altar I saw this idol of jealousy.6And he said to me, ‘Son of man, do you see what they are doing – the utterly detestable things the Israelites are doing here, things that will drive me far from my sanctuary? But you will see things that are even more detestable.’7Then he brought me to the entrance to the court. I looked, and I saw a hole in the wall.8He said to me, ‘Son of man, now dig into the wall.’ So I dug into the wall and saw a doorway there.9And he said to me, ‘Go in and see the wicked and detestable things they are doing here.’10So I went in and looked, and I saw portrayed all over the walls all kinds of crawling things and unclean animals and all the idols of Israel.11In front of them stood seventy elders of Israel, and Jaazaniah son of Shaphan was standing among them. Each had a censer in his hand, and a fragrant cloud of incense was rising.12He said to me, ‘Son of man, have you seen what the elders of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his own idol? They say, “The Lord does not see us; the Lord has forsaken the land.” ’13Again, he said, ‘You will see them doing things that are even more detestable.’14Then he brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the house of the Lord, and I saw women sitting there, mourning the god Tammuz.15He said to me, ‘Do you see this, son of man? You will see things that are even more detestable than this.’16He then brought me into the inner court of the house of the Lord, and there at the entrance to the temple, between the portico and the altar, were about twenty-five men. With their backs towards the temple of the Lord and their faces towards the east, they were bowing down to the sun in the east.17He said to me, ‘Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a trivial matter for the people of Judah to do the detestable things they are doing here? Must they also fill the land with violence and continually arouse my anger? Look at them putting the branch to their nose!18Therefore I will deal with them in anger; I will not look on them with pity or spare them. Although they shout in my ears, I will not listen to them.’

So I lifted up mine eyes the way toward the north, and behold northward at the gate of the altar this image of jealousy in the entry.6He said furthermore unto me, Son of man, seest thou what they do? even the great abominations that the house of Israel committeth here, that I should go far off from my sanctuary? but turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations.7And he brought me to the door of the court; and when I looked, behold a hole in the wall.8Then said he unto me, Son of man, dig now in the wall: and when I had digged in the wall, behold a door.9And he said unto me, Go in, and behold the wicked abominations that they do here.10So I went in and saw; and behold every form of creeping things, and abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, pourtrayed upon the wall round about.11And there stood before them seventy men of the ancients of the house of Israel, and in the midst of them stood Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan, with every man his censer in his hand; and a thick cloud of incense went up.12Then said he unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery? for they say, The LORD seeth us not; the LORD hath forsaken the earth.13He said also unto me, Turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations that they do.14Then he brought me to the door of the gate of the LORD' house which was toward the north; and, behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz.15Then said he unto me, Hast thou seen this , O son of man? turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations than these.16And he brought me into the inner court of the LORD' house, and, behold, at the door of the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the altar, were about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the LORD, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the east.17Then he said unto me, Hast thou seen this , O son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here? for they have filled the land with violence, and have returned to provoke me to anger: and, lo, they put the branch to their nose.18Therefore will I also deal in fury: mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: and though they cry in mine ears with a loud voice, yet will I not hear them.

Ist es dem Haus Juda zu wenig, die Gräuel zu tun, die sie hier verüben, dass sie auch das Land mit Frevel erfüllen und mich immer wieder zum Zorn reizen? Und siehe, sie halten grüne Zweige an ihre Nase![2] (Isa 65:3; Jer 7:18; Eze 7:23; Eze 16:26)18So will denn auch ich in meinem grimmigen Zorn handeln; mein Auge soll sie nicht verschonen, und ich will mich nicht über sie erbarmen; und wenn sie mir auch mit lauter Stimme in die Ohren schreien, so werde ich sie doch nicht erhören! Große Gräuel sind es, die das Haus Israel hier tut, um mich von meinem Heiligtum zu vertreiben. Aber du wirst noch größere Gräuel sehen.7Und er führte mich zur Tür des Vorhofes. Da sah ich, und siehe, da war ein Loch in der Wand.8Und er sprach zu mir: Du Menschenkind, brich ein Loch durch die Wand. (Ro 1:23)11Davor standen siebzig Männer von den Ältesten des Hauses Israel, und Jaasanja, der Sohn Schafans, stand mitten unter ihnen. Und ein jeder hatte sein Räuchergefäß in der Hand und der Duft einer Wolke von Weihrauch stieg auf. Aber du sollst noch größere Gräuel sehen als diese.16Und er führte mich in den inneren Vorhof am Hause des HERRN; und siehe, vor dem Eingang zum Tempel des HERRN, zwischen der Vorhalle und dem Altar, standen etwa fünfundzwanzig Männer, die ihren Rücken gegen den Tempel des HERRN und ihr Gesicht gegen Osten gewendet hatten, und beteten gegen Osten die Sonne an. Ist es dem Hause Juda nicht genug, diese Gräuel hier zu treiben, dass sie auch sonst das ganze Land mit Gewalttat erfüllen und mich immer wieder reizen? Und siehe, sie halten sich die Weinrebe an die Nase.[1]18Darum will ich auch mit Grimm an ihnen handeln, und mein Auge soll ohne Mitleid auf sie blicken, und ich will nicht gnädig sein.
