1And God spoke all these words:2‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.3‘You shall have no other gods before[1] me.4You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.5You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,6but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.7You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.8Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.9Six days you shall labour and do all your work,10but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.11For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.12Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.13You shall not murder.14You shall not commit adultery.15You shall not steal.16You shall not give false testimony against your neighbour.17You shall not covet your neighbour’s house. You shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour.’18When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance19and said to Moses, ‘Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not let God speak to us or we will die.’20Moses said to the people, ‘Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.’21The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.
Idols and altars
22Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Tell the Israelites this: “You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven:23do not make any gods to be alongside me; do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold.24‘ “Make an altar of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name to be honoured, I will come to you and bless you.25If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool on it.26And do not go up to my altar on steps, or your private parts may be exposed.”

Mach dir überhaupt kein Abbild von irgendetwas im Himmel, auf der Erde oder im Meer. (Ex 34:17; Le 19:4; Le 26:1; De 4:15; De 27:15)5Wirf dich nicht vor fremden Göttern nieder und diene ihnen nicht. Denn ich, der HERR, dein Gott, bin ein leidenschaftlich liebender Gott und erwarte auch von dir ungeteilte Liebe.[2] Wenn sich jemand von mir abwendet, dann ziehe ich dafür noch seine Nachkommen zur Rechenschaft bis in die dritte und vierte Generation. An diesem Tag sollst du nicht arbeiten, auch nicht dein Sohn oder deine Tochter, dein Sklave oder deine Sklavin, dein Vieh oder der Fremde, der bei dir lebt.11Denn in sechs Tagen hat der HERR Himmel, Erde und Meer mit allem, was lebt, geschaffen. Mose als Mittler zwischen Gott und Volk
18Als das ganze Volk erlebte, wie es blitzte und donnerte, Posaunenschall[6] ertönte und der Berg rauchte, bekam es große Angst und blieb zitternd in weiter Ferne stehen. (De 5:22)19Die Leute sagten zu Mose: »Wir haben Angst, wenn Gott so mit uns redet. Wir werden noch alle umkommen! Sprich du an seiner Stelle zu uns, wir wollen auf dich hören.« (Heb 12:19)20Da sagte Mose zum Volk: »Ihr müsst keine Angst haben. Gott ist nur gekommen, um euch auf die Probe zu stellen. Er will, dass ihr ihn ehrt und euch davor hütet, ihm ungehorsam zu sein.«21Das Volk blieb also in der Ferne stehen. Mose aber näherte sich der dunklen Wolke, in der Gott war.
Anweisung für den Altarbau
22Der HERR sagte zu Mose: »Richte den Israeliten aus: ›Ihr habt erlebt, wie ich vom Himmel her mit euch gesprochen habe.23Darum sollt ihr keine anderen Götter neben mir haben. Macht euch keine silbernen und goldenen Götzenbilder! (Ex 20:4)24Macht mir einen Altar aus aufgeschütteter Erde! Darauf sollt ihr mir eure Opfer darbringen, die Brand- und Mahlopfer von euren Schafen, Ziegen und Rindern. Ihr könnt das an jedem Ort tun, den ich zum Heiligtum für mich bestimmen werde.[7] Überall dort werde ich euch nahe sein und werde euch Glück und Segen schenken.25Wenn ihr aber einen Altar aus Steinen für mich bauen wollt, dürft ihr nur unbehauene Steine verwenden. Wenn der Stein mit dem Meißel in Berührung gekommen ist, ist er entweiht. (De 27:5; Jos 8:31)26Baut mir keine hohen Altäre mit Stufen, damit der Priester nicht hinaufsteigen muss und dabei seine Scham entblößt.‹«
