from Biblica1Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.2‘Honour your father and mother’ – which is the first commandment with a promise –3‘so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’ (De 5:16)4Fathers,[1] do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.5Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.6Obey them not only to win their favour when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart.7Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people,8because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.9And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favouritism with him.
The armour of God
10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.11Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.13Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled round your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.19Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel,20for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.
Final greetings
21Tychicus, the dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything, so that you also may know how I am and what I am doing.22I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage you.23Peace to the brothers and sisters,[2] and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.24Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.[3]
1Ihr Kinder, gehorcht euren Eltern, wie es der Gemeinschaft mit dem Herrn entspricht; denn so ist es recht. (Col 3:20)2»Du sollst deinen Vater und deine Mutter ehren« ist das erste und grundlegende der Gebote, die das Verhalten der Menschen untereinander betreffen.[1] Darum folgt ihm auch eine Zusage: (De 5:16)3»Dann wird es dir gut gehen und du wirst lange leben auf dieser Erde.«4Ihr Väter,[2] behandelt eure Kinder nicht so, dass sie widerspenstig werden! Erzieht sie mit Wort und Tat so, wie es dem Herrn gemäß ist. (Col 3:21)
Sklaven und Herren
5Ihr Sklaven und Sklavinnen, gehorcht euren irdischen Herren und Herrinnen![3] Ehrt und fürchtet sie. Dient ihnen so aufrichtig, als dientet ihr Christus. (Col 3:22; 1Ti 6:1; Tit 2:9; 1Pe 2:18)6Tut es nicht nur äußerlich, um euch bei ihnen einzuschmeicheln. Betrachtet euch vielmehr als Sklaven von Christus, die den Willen Gottes gerne tun. (1Co 7:22)7Tut eure Arbeit mit Lust und Liebe, als Leute, die nicht Menschen dienen, sondern dem Herrn.8Denkt daran: Der Herr wird jeden für seine guten Taten belohnen, gleichgültig ob jemand Sklave ist oder frei. (2Co 5:10)9Ihr Herren und Herrinnen, behandelt eure Sklaven und Sklavinnen im gleichen Geist! Lasst das Schelten und Drohen! Denkt daran, dass sie einen Herrn im Himmel haben, der auch euer Herr ist. Und der ist ein unparteiischer Richter. (Col 4:1; Jas 2:1)
Die Waffen Gottes
10Noch ein letztes Wort: Werdet stark durch die Verbindung mit dem Herrn! Lasst euch stärken von seiner Kraft! (1Co 16:13)11Legt die Waffen an, die Gott euch gibt, dann können euch die Schliche des Teufels nichts anhaben. (Isa 59:17; 2Co 10:4; Jas 4:7; Wis 5:17)12Denn wir kämpfen nicht gegen Menschen. Wir kämpfen gegen unsichtbare Mächte und Gewalten, gegen die bösen Geister,[4] die diese finstere Welt beherrschen. (Eph 1:21; Eph 2:2; 1Pe 5:8)13Darum greift zu den Waffen Gottes! Wenn dann der schlimme Tag kommt, könnt ihr Widerstand leisten, jeden Feind niederkämpfen und siegreich das Feld behaupten. (Ro 13:12)14Seid also bereit! Legt die Wahrheit als Gürtel um und die Gerechtigkeit als Panzer an. (Isa 11:5)15Bekleidet euch an den Füßen mit der Bereitschaft, die Gute Nachricht vom Frieden mit Gott zu verkünden. (Isa 52:7)16Vor allem haltet das Vertrauen auf Gott als Schild vor euch, mit dem ihr alle Brandpfeile des Satans abfangen könnt.17Die Gewissheit eurer Rettung sei euer Helm und das Wort Gottes das Schwert, das der Geist euch gibt. (Heb 4:12)18Betet dabei zu jeder Zeit und bittet Gott in der Kraft seines Geistes. Seid wach und hört nicht auf, für alle Gläubigen[5] zu beten. (Lu 18:1; Ro 15:30; Eph 3:14; Col 4:2)19Betet auch für mich, dass Gott mir die rechten Worte in den Mund legt und ich das Geheimnis der Guten Nachricht freimütig bekannt machen kann. (Ac 4:29)20Auch jetzt im Gefängnis bin ich ein Botschafter in ihrem Dienst. Betet darum, dass ich aus ihr die Kraft gewinne, sie mutig und offen zu verkünden, wie es mein Auftrag ist. (Eph 3:1)
Grüße und Wünsche
21Ihr sollt aber auch etwas über mich erfahren, damit ihr wisst, wie es mit mir steht. Tychikus, der geliebte Bruder und treue Sachwalter im Dienst des Herrn, wird euch alles erzählen. (Ac 20:4; Col 4:7; 2Ti 4:12)22Ich schicke ihn eben deshalb zu euch, damit er euch von mir berichtet und euch Mut macht.23Allen Brüdern und Schwestern[6] wünsche ich den Frieden und die Liebe und das unerschütterliche Vertrauen, die von Gott, dem Vater, kommen und von Jesus Christus, dem Herrn.24Die Gnade Gottes sei mit allen, die unseren Herrn Jesus Christus lieben, und schenke ihnen unvergängliches Leben!
