1 Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. 3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5 For of this you can be sure: no immoral, impure or greedy person – such a person is an idolater – has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.^[1] 6 Let no-one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible – and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said: ‘Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.’ 15 Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Instructions for Christian households

21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Saviour. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing^[2] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no-one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church – 30 for we are members of his body. 31 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ (Ge 2:24) 32 This is a profound mystery – but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Leben im Licht

3 Weil ihr Gottes heiliges Volk seid,^[1] schickt es sich nicht, dass bei euch von Unzucht, Ausschweifung und Habgier auch nur gesprochen wird. (Ga 5:19) 4 Es passt auch nicht zu euch, gemeine, dumme oder schlüpfrige Reden zu führen. Benutzt eure Zunge lieber, um Gott zu danken! (Eph 4:29) 5 Ihr müsst wissen: Wer Unzucht treibt, ein ausschweifendes Leben führt oder von Habgier erfüllt ist – und Habgier ist eine Form von Götzendienst –, für den ist kein Platz in der neuen Welt, in der Christus zusammen mit Gott herrschen wird.^[2] 6 Lasst euch nicht durch leeres Geschwätz verführen! Genau diese Dinge sind es, mit denen die Menschen, die Gott nicht gehorchen wollen, sich sein Strafgericht zuziehen. (Ro 1:18; Eph 2:3; Col 3:6) 7 Mit solchen Leuten dürft ihr nichts zu tun haben! 8 Auch ihr gehörtet einst zur Finsternis, ja, ihr wart selbst Finsternis, aber jetzt seid ihr Licht, weil ihr mit dem Herrn verbunden seid. Lebt nun auch als Menschen des Lichts! (Joh 8:12; Ac 26:18; Col 3:7) 9 Aus dem Licht erwächst als Frucht jede Art von Güte, Rechtschaffenheit und Treue. (Ga 5:22) 10 Fragt immer, was dem Herrn gefällt! 11 Beteiligt euch nicht an dem finsteren Treiben, das keine Frucht hervorbringt. Im Gegenteil, deckt es auf! 12 Man muss sich schämen, auch nur zu nennen, was manche heimlich tun. 13 Wenn es aber vom Licht, das ihr ausstrahlt,^[3] aufgedeckt wird, kommt es ans Licht. 14 Und was ans Licht kommt, wird selbst Licht. Darum singen wir: »Wach auf, du Schläfer! Steh auf vom Tod! Und Christus, deine Sonne, geht für dich auf.« (Isa 60:1; Ro 13:11) 15 Darum achtet genau auf eure Lebensweise! Lebt nicht wie Unwissende, sondern wie Menschen, die wissen, worauf es ankommt. (Col 4:5) 16 Nutzt die Zeit; denn wir leben in einer bösen Welt. 17 Seid also nicht uneinsichtig, sondern begreift, was der Herr von euch erwartet. 18 Betrinkt euch nicht; denn zu viel Wein verführt zu einem liederlichen Lebenswandel. Lasst euch lieber vom Geist Gottes erfüllen! (Ro 13:13) 19 Ermuntert einander mit Psalmen und Lobliedern, wie der Geist sie euch eingibt. Singt und spielt Christus, dem Herrn, von ganzem Herzen. (Col 3:16) 20 Dankt Gott, dem Vater, zu jeder Zeit für alles im Namen unseres Herrn Jesus Christus.

Gegenseitige Unterordnung: Männer und Frauen

21 Ordnet euch einander unter, wie es die Ehrfurcht vor Christus verlangt. (1Pe 5:5) 22 Ihr Frauen, ordnet euch euren Männern unter, so wie ihr euch dem Herrn unterordnet. (Col 3:18; Tit 2:3; 1Pe 3:1) 23 Denn der Mann steht über der Frau, so wie Christus über der Gemeinde steht. Christus als dem Haupt verdankt die Gemeinde, die sein Leib ist, ihre Rettung. (1Co 11:3; Eph 1:22) 24 Wie nun die Gemeinde Christus untergeordnet ist, so müssen auch die Frauen sich ihren Männern in allem unterordnen. 25 Ihr Männer, liebt eure Frauen so, wie Christus die Gemeinde geliebt hat! Er hat sein Leben für sie gegeben, (Ga 1:4; Col 3:19; Tit 2:6; 1Pe 3:7)

26 um sie rein und heilig zu machen im Wasser der Taufe und durch das dabei gesprochene Wort.^[4] (1Co 6:11; Tit 3:5; Heb 10:22; 1Pe 3:21)

27 Denn er wollte sie als seine Braut in makelloser Schönheit vor sich stellen, ohne Flecken und Falten oder einen anderen Fehler, heilig und vollkommen. (2Co 11:2; Eph 1:4; Php 1:10; Col 1:22)

28 So müssen auch die Männer ihre Frauen lieben wie ihren eigenen Körper. Denn ein Mann, der seine Frau liebt, liebt sich selbst. 29 Niemand hat doch je seinen eigenen Körper gehasst; im Gegenteil, er ernährt und pflegt ihn. So tut es auch Christus mit der Gemeinde, 30 die sein Leib ist.^[5] Und wir alle sind doch Teile an diesem Leib. (Eph 1:23) 31 Ihr kennt das Wort: »Deshalb verlässt ein Mann Vater und Mutter, um mit seiner Frau zu leben. Die zwei sind dann eins, mit Leib und Seele.« (Ge 2:24) 32 In diesem Wort liegt ein tiefes Geheimnis. Ich beziehe die Aussage auf Christus und die Gemeinde. (Re 19:7) 33 Es gilt aber auch für euch: Jeder von euch muss seine Frau so lieben wie sich selbst. Die Frau aber soll ihren Mann achten.
