Love and hatred for fellow believers
3We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands.4Whoever says, ‘I know him,’ but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.5But if anyone obeys his word, love for God[1] is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him:6whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.7Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard.8Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.9Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister[2] is still in the darkness.10Anyone who loves their brother and sister[3] lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.11But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.
Reasons for writing
12I am writing to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.13I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one.14I write to you, dear children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
On not loving the world
15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[4] is not in them.16For everything in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – comes not from the Father but from the world.17The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives for ever.
Warnings against denying the Son
18Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.19They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.20But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.[5]21I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.22Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist – denying the Father and the Son.23No-one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.24As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.25And this is what he promised us – eternal life.26I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.27As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit – just as it has taught you, remain in him.
God’s children and sin
28And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.29If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.

Wahre Gotteserkenntnis: Sein Wort befolgen
3Ob wir Gott wirklich kennen, erkennen wir daran, dass wir auf seine Befehle hören.4Wer behauptet: »Ich kenne Gott«, ihm aber nicht gehorcht, ist ein Lügner und die Wahrheit lebt nicht in ihm. (Joh 8:44; 1Jo 1:6; 1Jo 4:6)5Wer aber Gottes Wort befolgt, bei dem hat die göttliche Liebe ihr Ziel erreicht. Und daran erkennen wir, dass wir Gemeinschaft mit ihm haben. (Joh 14:15; 1Jo 2:17; 1Jo 5:3; 2Jo 1:6)6Wer behauptet, ständig Gemeinschaft mit ihm zu haben, muss so leben, wie Jesus gelebt hat. (Joh 13:15; Joh 15:4)
Das neue Gebot
7Ihr Lieben, was ich euch schreibe, ist kein neues Gebot, sondern das alte, das ihr von Anfang an kennt. Es ist die Botschaft, die ihr gehört habt. (Joh 13:34; 1Jo 2:24; 1Jo 3:11)8Und doch ist es ein stets neues Gebot – so wie Christus es verkündet und selbst erfüllt hat und wie er es euch gegeben und euch zu seiner Erfüllung befähigt hat.[3] Denn die Dunkelheit weicht zurück und das wahre Licht leuchtet schon. (Joh 8:12; Ro 13:12)9Wer behauptet, im Licht zu leben, aber seinen Bruder oder seine Schwester[4] nicht liebt, ist immer noch im Dunkeln. (1Jo 3:10; 1Jo 3:15; 1Jo 4:20)10Nur wer seine Glaubensgeschwister liebt, lebt wirklich im Licht. Und im Licht gibt es nichts, wodurch jemand zu Fall kommen könnte.[5]11Wer aber seinen Bruder oder seine Schwester nicht liebt, lebt in der Dunkelheit. Ein solcher Mensch tappt im Dunkeln und weiß nicht, wo sein Weg endet; denn die Dunkelheit hat ihn blind gemacht.
Absage an die gottfeindliche Welt
12Ihr Kinder, ich gebe es euch schriftlich:[6] Eure Verfehlungen sind vergeben; das verbürgt der Name Jesus Christus. (Ac 4:12; 1Jo 3:5)13Ihr Väter und Mütter,[7] ich gebe es euch schriftlich: Ihr habt den erkannt, der von Anfang an da ist. Ihr jungen Leute,[8] ich gebe es euch schriftlich: Ihr habt den Teufel besiegt.14So habt ihr es jetzt schwarz auf weiß,[9] ihr Kinder: Ihr habt den Vater erkannt! Ihr habt es schwarz auf weiß, ihr Väter und Mütter: Ihr habt den erkannt, der von Anfang an da ist! Ihr habt es schwarz auf weiß, ihr jungen Leute: Ihr seid stark, denn das Wort Gottes ist in euch lebendig und ihr habt den Teufel besiegt!15Liebt nicht die Welt und das, was zu ihr gehört! Wer die Welt liebt, in dessen Herz gibt es keine Liebe zum Vater. (Jas 4:4)16Die Welt ist erfüllt von der Gier der Triebe und Sinne, von der Gier der Augen, vom Prahlen mit Geld und Macht. Das alles kommt nicht vom Vater, sondern gehört zur Welt. (Ro 13:14; Eph 2:3)17Die Welt vergeht und mit ihr die ganze Lust und Gier. Wer aber tut, was Gott will, wird ewig leben. (1Co 7:31; 1Jo 2:5)
Die Boten des Antichrist
18Meine Kinder, die letzte Stunde ist da! Ihr habt gehört, dass der Antichrist kommen wird, und er ist schon da: Viele »Antichristen« sind aufgetreten, und daran erkennen wir, dass es die letzte Stunde ist. (2Th 2:3; 1Jo 4:3; 2Jo 1:7)19Sie waren früher mit uns zusammen; aber sie gehörten nicht wirklich zu uns, sonst wären sie bei uns geblieben. Sie haben sich von uns getrennt, damit sie allesamt bloßgestellt würden als solche, die nie zu uns gehört haben. (Ac 20:30)20Ihr aber habt von Christus den Heiligen Geist empfangen,[10] und ihr alle habt die wahre Erkenntnis. (1Jo 2:27)21Ich schreibe euch also nicht, weil ich meine, dass ihr die Wahrheit noch nicht kennt. Ihr kennt sie sehr wohl und wisst deshalb auch, dass aus der Wahrheit keinerlei Lüge kommen kann.22Wer ist der Lügner? Der, der verneint, dass in Jesus der Sohn Gottes erschienen ist.[11] Das ist der Antichrist; er verneint mit dem Sohn auch den Vater. (1Jo 4:2; 2Jo 1:7)23Wer den Sohn leugnet, hat auch keine Verbindung mit dem Vater. Wer sich aber zum Sohn bekennt, ist auch mit dem Vater verbunden. (1Jo 4:15; 2Jo 1:9)24Bewahrt also in eurem Herzen die Botschaft, die ihr von Anfang an gehört habt. Wenn das, was ihr von Anfang an gehört habt, in eurem Herzen bleibt, dann werdet auch ihr stets mit dem Sohn und dem Vater verbunden bleiben. (1Jo 2:7)25Und das ist es auch, was Christus uns versprochen hat: ewiges Leben. (Joh 5:24)26So viel über die Leute, die euch irreführen wollen.27Ihr aber habt von Christus den Heiligen Geist[12] empfangen. Solange dieser Geist in euch bleibt, habt ihr keinen anderen Lehrer nötig. Denn er belehrt euch über alles. Was er sagt, ist wahr und keine Lüge. Tut darum, was der Geist euch lehrt: Bleibt mit Christus vereint! (Joh 14:16)
Mahnung zur Treue
28Bleibt also mit ihm vereint, meine Kinder! Dann werden wir voll Zuversicht sein, wenn er erscheint, und müssen nicht als Schuldige vor ihm stehen, wenn er kommt. (Joh 15:4; 1Jo 3:21)29Ihr wisst doch, dass Christus nie etwas Unrechtes getan hat. Dann wisst ihr auch, dass jeder, der das Rechte tut, genau wie Christus Gott zum Vater hat. (1Jo 3:7; 1Jo 3:10)
