Nahum 1

New International Version

1 A prophecy concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.2 The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord takes vengeance and is filled with wrath. The Lord takes vengeance on his foes and vents his wrath against his enemies.3 The Lord is slow to anger but great in power; the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished. His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and clouds are the dust of his feet.4 He rebukes the sea and dries it up; he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither and the blossoms of Lebanon fade.5 The mountains quake before him and the hills melt away. The earth trembles at his presence, the world and all who live in it.6 Who can withstand his indignation? Who can endure his fierce anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; the rocks are shattered before him.7 The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him,8 but with an overwhelming flood he will make an end of Nineveh; he will pursue his foes into the realm of darkness.9 Whatever they plot against the Lord he will bring[1] to an end; trouble will not come a second time.10 They will be entangled among thorns and drunk from their wine; they will be consumed like dry stubble.[2]11 From you, Nineveh, has one come forth who plots evil against the Lord and devises wicked plans.12 This is what the Lord says: ‘Although they have allies and are numerous, they will be destroyed and pass away. Although I have afflicted you, Judah, I will afflict you no more.13 Now I will break their yoke from your neck and tear your shackles away.’14 The Lord has given a command concerning you, Nineveh: ‘You will have no descendants to bear your name. I will destroy the images and idols that are in the temple of your gods. I will prepare your grave, for you are vile.’15 Look, there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace! Celebrate your festivals, Judah, and fulfil your vows. No more will the wicked invade you; they will be completely destroyed.[3]

Nahum 1

English Standard Version

1 An oracle concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh. (Isa 13:1; Jon 1:2; Na 2:8; Na 3:7)2 The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord is avenging and wrathful; the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries and keeps wrath for his enemies. (Ex 20:5; Ps 92:9; Ps 103:9)3 The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. (Ex 34:6; Ex 34:7; Job 9:4; Ps 18:9; Ps 97:2; Ps 147:5)4 He rebukes the sea and makes it dry; he dries up all the rivers; Bashan and Carmel wither; the bloom of Lebanon withers. (Jos 19:26; Ps 106:9; Isa 33:9; Isa 50:2)5 The mountains quake before him; the hills melt; the earth heaves before him, the world and all who dwell in it. (Ps 98:7; Jer 4:24; Am 9:13; Hab 3:6)6 Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken into pieces by him. (2Ch 34:21; Ps 79:6; Eze 38:20; Mal 3:2)7 The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him. (Ps 1:6; Ps 46:1; Ps 100:5; Isa 25:4; Jer 33:11; Joh 10:14; Joh 10:27; 1Co 8:3; 2Ti 2:19)8 But with an overflowing flood he will make a complete end of the adversaries,[1] and will pursue his enemies into darkness. (Isa 8:22; Isa 30:28)9 What do you plot against the Lord? He will make a complete end; trouble will not rise up a second time. (Isa 10:7; Jer 4:27)10 For they are like entangled thorns, like drunkards as they drink; they are consumed like stubble fully dried. (Joe 2:5; Mic 7:4)11 From you came one who plotted evil against the Lord, a worthless counselor. (2Ki 19:22; Na 1:9)12 Thus says the Lord, “Though they are at full strength and many, they will be cut down and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more. (Isa 9:1; Isa 10:33; Isa 37:36; Na 1:9)13 And now I will break his yoke from off you and will burst your bonds apart.” (Isa 9:4; Isa 10:27; Isa 14:25)14 The Lord has given commandment about you: “No more shall your name be perpetuated; from the house of your gods I will cut off the carved image and the metal image. I will make your grave, for you are vile.” (2Ki 19:37; Ps 109:13; Isa 30:33; Eze 32:21; Na 3:6)15 [2] Behold, upon the mountains, the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace! Keep your feasts, O Judah; fulfill your vows, for never again shall the worthless pass through you; he is utterly cut off. (Nu 30:2; Isa 30:29; Isa 52:7; Joe 3:17; Na 1:12; Ro 10:15)
