John 15

New International Version

1 ‘I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[1] so that it will be even more fruitful.3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.5 ‘I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.9 ‘As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.12 My command is this: love each other as I have loved you.13 Greater love has no-one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.14 You are my friends if you do what I command.15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit – fruit that will last – and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.17 This is my command: love each other.18 ‘If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.20 Remember what I told you: “A servant is not greater than his master.” If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. (Joh 13:16)21 They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me.22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well.24 If I had not done among them the works no-one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father.25 But this is to fulfil what is written in their Law: “They hated me without reason.”26 ‘When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father – the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father – he will testify about me.27 And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.

John 15

English Standard Version

1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. (Jer 2:21; 1Co 3:9)2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. (Mt 3:10; Mt 7:19; Mt 13:12; Mt 15:13; Joh 15:6; Ro 11:17; Ro 11:22; 2Pe 1:8)3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. (Joh 13:10; Joh 15:7; Joh 17:17; Eph 5:26)4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. (Joh 3:15; Joh 6:56; Joh 15:5; Php 1:11; Col 1:23; 1Jo 2:6)5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. (Joh 15:16; Ro 6:5; Col 1:6; Col 1:10)6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. (Eze 15:4; Mt 13:40; Joh 15:2)7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. (Joh 8:31; Joh 14:13)8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. (Isa 61:3; Mt 5:16; Joh 15:5; 2Co 9:13; Php 1:11)9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. (Joh 5:20; Joh 13:34)10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. (Joh 8:55; Joh 10:18; Joh 14:15; Joh 14:23; Joh 17:4; Php 2:8)11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. (Joh 3:29; Joh 16:24; Joh 17:13; 2Co 2:3; 1Jo 1:4; 2Jo 1:12)12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. (Joh 13:34)13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. (Joh 10:11; Ro 5:7; Eph 5:2)14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. (Mt 12:50; Lu 12:4; Joh 15:10)15 No longer do I call you servants,[1] for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. (Ge 18:17; Joh 3:32; Joh 8:26; Joh 8:40; Joh 13:7; Joh 13:12; Joh 15:20; Joh 16:13; Joh 17:26; 1Co 2:16; 1Co 13:9)16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. (Joh 13:18; Joh 14:13; Joh 15:7; 2Jo 1:8)17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another. (Joh 15:12)18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. (Joh 7:7; Joh 15:23; 1Jo 3:13)19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. (Lu 6:26; Joh 17:14; Joh 17:16; Ga 1:4; Jas 4:4; 1Jo 4:5)20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. (Eze 3:7; Mt 10:24; Joh 8:51; Joh 13:16; Joh 15:15; Joh 16:33; 1Co 4:12; 2Co 4:9; 1Th 2:15; 2Ti 3:12)21 But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. (Mt 10:22; Mt 24:9; Joh 16:3; Ac 3:17; Ac 5:41; 1Pe 4:14; 1Pe 4:16; Re 2:3)22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin,[2] but now they have no excuse for their sin. (Mt 11:22; Mt 11:24; Lu 12:47; Joh 9:41)23 Whoever hates me hates my Father also. (Joh 5:23)24 If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. (Mt 9:33; Joh 3:2; Joh 7:31; Joh 9:32; Joh 10:32; Joh 10:37; Joh 14:9; Joh 15:22)25 But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.’ (Ps 35:19; Ps 69:4; Joh 10:34; Joh 12:38)26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. (Joh 14:16; Joh 14:26; 1Co 12:3; 1Jo 5:7)27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning. (Lu 1:2; Lu 24:48; Joh 19:35; Joh 21:24; Ac 1:21; Ac 4:20; 1Jo 1:2; 1Jo 2:7; 1Jo 4:14; 3Jo 1:12)
