1 Corinthians 6

New International Version

1 If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people?2 Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases?3 Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!4 Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church?5 I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers?6 But instead, one brother takes another to court – and this in front of unbelievers!7 The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?8 Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers and sisters.9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men[1]10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.12 ‘I have the right to do anything,’ you say – but not everything is beneficial. ‘I have the right to do anything’ – but I will not be mastered by anything.13 You say, ‘Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.’ The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also.15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never!16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, ‘The two will become one flesh.’ (Ge 2:24)17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.[2]18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honour God with your bodies.

1 Corinthians 6

English Standard Version

1 When one of you has a grievance against another, does he dare go to law before the unrighteous instead of the saints? (Mt 18:17)2 Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? (Da 7:22; Mt 19:28; Re 20:4)3 Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life!4 So if you have such cases, why do you lay them before those who have no standing in the church? (1Co 5:12)5 I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no one among you wise enough to settle a dispute between the brothers, (1Co 4:14; 1Co 15:34)6 but brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers?7 To have lawsuits at all with one another is already a defeat for you. Why not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be defrauded? (Mt 5:39)8 But you yourselves wrong and defraud—even your own brothers![1] (1Th 4:6)9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous[2] will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality,[3] (1Co 15:50; Ga 5:21; Eph 5:5; 1Ti 1:9; Heb 12:14; Heb 13:4; Re 21:8; Re 22:15)10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (Ac 22:16; Ro 8:30; 1Co 1:2; 1Co 12:2; Eph 2:2; Eph 4:22; Eph 5:8; Col 3:7; Tit 3:3; Tit 3:5; Heb 10:22)12 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. (1Co 10:23)13 “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. (Mt 15:17; 1Co 6:15; 1Co 6:19; Eph 5:23; Col 2:22)14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. (Mt 22:29; Joh 6:39; Ac 2:24; 1Co 15:22; Eph 1:19)15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! (Ro 12:5; 1Co 6:13; 1Co 12:27; Eph 5:30)16 Or do you not know that he who is joined[4] to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” (Ge 2:24; Mt 19:5; Mr 10:8; Eph 5:31)17 But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. (Joh 17:21; Eph 4:4)18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin[5] a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. (Pr 5:11; 2Co 12:21; Eph 5:3)19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, (Joh 2:21; Ro 14:7; 1Co 3:16)20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. (Ac 20:28; 1Co 7:23; Php 1:20; Heb 9:12; Heb 9:14; 2Pe 2:1)
