Achan’s sin

1 But the Israelites were unfaithful in regard to the devoted things^[1]; Achan son of Karmi, the son of Zimri,^[2] the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of them. So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel. (1Ch 2:6) 2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth Aven to the east of Bethel, and told them, ‘Go up and spy out the region.’ So the men went up and spied out Ai. 3 When they returned to Joshua, they said, ‘Not all the army will have to go up against Ai. Send two or three thousand men to take it and do not weary the whole army, for only a few people live there.’ 4 So about three thousand went up; but they were routed by the men of Ai, 5 who killed about thirty-six of them. They chased the Israelites from the city gate as far as the stone quarries and struck them down on the slopes. At this the hearts of the people melted in fear and became like water. 6 Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell face down to the ground before the ark of the Lord, remaining there till evening. The elders of Israel did the same, and sprinkled dust on their heads. 7 And Joshua said, ‘Alas, Sovereign Lord, why did you ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us? If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan! 8 Pardon your servant, Lord. What can I say, now that Israel has been routed by its enemies? 9 The Canaanites and the other people of the country will hear about this and they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth. What then will you do for your own great name?’ 10 The Lord said to Joshua, ‘Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? 11 Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. 12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction. 13 ‘Go, consecrate the people. Tell them, “Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: there are devoted things among you, Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them. 14 ‘ “In the morning, present yourselves tribe by tribe. The tribe that the Lord chooses shall come forward clan by clan; the clan that the Lord chooses shall come forward family by family; and the family that the Lord chooses shall come forward man by man. 15 Whoever is caught with the devoted things shall be destroyed by fire, along with all that belongs to him. He has violated the covenant of the Lord and has done an outrageous thing in Israel!” ’ 16 Early the next morning Joshua made Israel come forward by tribes, and Judah was chosen. 17 The clans of Judah came forward, and the Zerahites were chosen. He made the clan of the Zerahites come forward by families, and Zimri was chosen. 18 Joshua made his family come forward man by man, and Achan son of Karmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was chosen. 19 Then Joshua said to Achan, ‘My son, give glory to the Lord, the God of Israel, and honour him. Tell me what you have done; do not hide it from me.’ 20 Achan replied, ‘It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. This is what I have done: 21 when I saw in the plunder a beautiful robe from Babylonia,^[3] two hundred shekels^[4] of silver and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels,^[5] I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.’ 22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent, and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver underneath. 23 They took the things from the tent, brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites and spread them out before the Lord. 24 Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the gold bar, his sons and daughters, his cattle, donkeys and sheep, his tent and all that he had, to the Valley of Achor. 25 Joshua said, ‘Why have you brought this trouble on us? The Lord will bring trouble on you today.’ Then all Israel stoned him, and after they had stoned the rest, they burned them. 26 Over Achan they heaped up a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day. Then the Lord turned from his fierce anger. Therefore that place has been called the Valley of Achor^[6] ever since.

Akans olydnad

1 Men israeliterna syndade. Akan, som var Karmis son, sonson till Sabdi och sonsons son till Sera av Judas stam lydde inte Guds befallning att förstöra allt utom det som skulle föras till Herrens skattkammare. Han behöll en del av bytet för sig själv, och därför blev Herren mycket förargad på hela Israels folk. 2 Strax efter det att Jeriko hade fallit sände Josua några av sina män som spioner till staden Ai, som ligger öster om Betel. 3 När de kom tillbaka rapporterade de till Josua: "Det är en liten stad, och det behövs nog inte mer än 2.000 eller 3.000 man för att utplåna den. Det är ingen idé att hela folket beger sig dit." 4 Man skickade då iväg omkring 3.000 soldater för att inta staden, men de lyckades inte slå ajiterna utan tvingades fly. 5 Trettiosex israeliter dödades under anfallet, och många andra dog under flykten. Folket blev fullkomligt skräckslaget inför den vändning som striden tagit. 6 Josua och de äldste i Israel rev sönder sina kläder i förtvivlan och föll ner framför Herrens ark och låg där med jord på sina huvuden ända till kvällen. 7 Josua ropade till Herren: "Varför lät du oss gå över Jordan, Herre, om du nu ska låta amoreerna döda oss? Varför var vi inte nöjda med vad vi hade? Varför stannade vi inte kvar på andra sidan Jordan? 8 Vad ska jag göra nu, Herre, när vi har flytt för fienden? 9 När kananeerna och alla andra som bor här runt omkring får höra talas om detta, kommer de att omringa oss och gå till anfall, och sedan är det slut med oss. Och hur går det då med ditt namn och stora anseende?" 10-11 Men Herren sa till Josua: "Res dig, Josua! Israel har syndat och brutit mot min befallning och tagit byte, när jag uttryckligen sa att de inte fick göra det. De har ljugit om detta och gömt bytet bland sina tillhörigheter. 12 Detta är anledningen till att folket blivit besegrat. Det är därför som dina män tvingats fly för sina fiender. Det vilar en förbannelse över dem. Jag kommer inte att vara med er längre om ni inte gör upp med denna synd. 13 Res dig nu upp och säg till folket: 'I dag måste alla gå igenom reningsritualen och rena sig, för Herren, er Gud, säger att någon har stulit från honom och att ni inte kan besegra era fiender förrän denna synd blivit uppklarad. 14 I morgon ska ni komma fram inför Herren, stam för stam, och Herren ska då genom lottdragning peka ut den stam som den skyldige tillhör. Den stammen måste träda fram släkt för släkt, och Herren ska peka ut den släkt som är skyldig. Den släkten måste komma fram familj för familj, och sedan ska varje medlem av den skyldiga familjen komma fram en och en. 15 Och den som har stulit det som tillhör Herren ska brännas upp i eld tillsammans med sina ägodelar därför att han brutit mot Herrens förbund och dragit olycka över hela Israel.' " 16 Tidigt nästa morgon förde Josua alltså fram de olika stammarna inför Herren, och Juda stam blev utpekad. 17 Sedan förde han fram de olika släkterna i den stammen, och då var det seraiternas släkt som utpekades. När sedan de olika familjerna i den släkten fördes fram inför Herren utpekades Sabdis familj. 18 Hans familjemedlemmar fick då gå fram en efter en, och det visade sig då att hans sonson Akan var den skyldige. 19 "Min son", sa Josua till honom. "Ge nu ära åt Israels Gud och bekänn din synd. Tala om vad det är du har gjort." 20 Akan svarade: "Jag har syndat mot Herren, Israels Gud. 21 Jag fick se en vacker mantel, som var importerad från Babylon, och en del silver som vägde ungefär två och ett halvt kilo och en guldplatta som vägde ungefär sexhundra gram. Jag ville så gärna ha det där, så jag tog det och grävde ner det under mitt tält, och silvret ligger längst ner." 22 Josua skickade då iväg några män för att leta reda på bytet. De skyndade sig till tältet och hittade alltsammans precis där Akan sagt att det skulle finnas. 23 De bar med sig bytet till Josua och lade det på marken framför honom. 24 Sedan tog Josua och allt folket Akan, silvret, manteln, guldet, hans söner och döttrar, hans oxar, åsnor och får, tältet och allt han ägde och förde alltsammans ner till Akors dal. 25 "Varför har du dragit denna olycka över oss?" frågade Josua Akan. "Herren ska nu låta olycka komma över dig."Allt folket stenade dem sedan till döds och brände deras kroppar 26 och begravde dem under ett stenröse som finns kvar än i dag, och platsen kallas Olyckans dal. Därefter upphörde Herrens vrede mot folket.
