Abimelek

1 Abimelek was the son of Jerub-Baal. He went to his mother’s brothers in Shechem. He spoke to them and to all the members of his mother’s family group. He said, 2 ‘Speak to all the citizens of Shechem. Tell them, “You can have all 70 of Jerub-Baal’s sons rule over you. Or you can have just one man rule over you. Which would you rather have?” Remember, I’m your own flesh and blood.’ 3 The brothers told all of that to the citizens of Shechem. Then the people decided to follow Abimelek. They said, ‘He’s related to us.’ 4 They gave him 850 grams of silver. They had taken it from the temple of the god named Baal-Berith. Abimelek used it to hire some men. They were wild and weren’t good for anything. They became his followers. 5 Abimelek went to his father’s home in Ophrah. There on a big rock he murdered his 70 brothers. All of them were the sons of Jerub-Baal. But Jotham escaped by hiding. He was Jerub-Baal’s youngest son. 6 All the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo came together. They gathered at the stone pillar that was beside the large tree in Shechem. They wanted to crown Abimelek as their king. 7 Jotham was told about it. So he climbed up on top of Mount Gerizim. He shouted down to them, ‘Citizens of Shechem! Listen to me! Then God will listen to you. 8 One day the trees went out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to an olive tree, “Be our king.” 9 ‘But the olive tree answered, “Should I give up my olive oil? It’s used to honour gods and people alike. Should I give that up just to rule over the trees?” 10 ‘Next, the trees said to a fig tree, “Come and be our king.” 11 ‘But the fig tree replied, “Should I give up my fruit? It’s so good and sweet. Should I give that up just to rule over the trees?” 12 ‘Then the trees said to a vine, “Come and be our king.” 13 ‘But the vine answered, “Should I give up my wine? It cheers up gods and people alike. Should I give that up just to rule over the trees?” 14 ‘Finally, all the trees spoke to a bush that had thorns. They said, “Come and be our king.” 15 ‘The bush asked the trees, “Do you really want to anoint me as king over you? If you do, come and rest in my shade. But if you don’t, I will destroy you! Fire will come out of me and burn up the cedar trees of Lebanon!” 16 ‘Did you act in an honest way when you made Abimelek your king? Did you really do the right thing? Have you been fair to Jerub-Baal and his family? Have you given him the honour he’s worthy of? 17 Remember that my father fought for you. He put his life in danger for you. He saved you from the power of Midian. 18 But today you have turned against my father’s family. You have murdered his 70 sons on a big rock. Abimelek is only the son of my father’s female slave. But you have made him king over the citizens of Shechem. You have done that because he’s related to you. 19 Have you citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo acted in an honest way towards Jerub-Baal? Have you done the right thing to his family today? If you have, may you be happy with Abimelek! And may he be happy with you! 20 But if you haven’t, let fire come out from Abimelek and burn you up! And let fire come out from you and burn Abimelek up!’ 21 Then Jotham ran away. He escaped to a town named Beer. He lived there because he was afraid of his brother Abimelek. 22 Abimelek ruled over Israel for three years. 23 Then God stirred up trouble between Abimelek and the citizens of Shechem. So they turned against Abimelek. They decided not to follow him anymore. 24 God made that happen because of what Abimelek had done to Jerub-Baal’s 70 sons. He had spilled their blood. God wanted to punish their brother Abimelek for doing that. He also wanted to punish the citizens of Shechem. They had helped Abimelek murder his brothers. 25 The citizens of Shechem didn’t want Abimelek to be their ruler anymore. So they hid some men on top of the hills. They wanted them to attack and rob everyone who passed by. Abimelek was told about it. 26 Gaal and his relatives moved into Shechem. Gaal was the son of Ebed. The citizens of Shechem put their trust in Gaal. 27 The people of Shechem went out into the fields. They gathered the grapes. They pressed the juice out of them by treading them. Then they held a feast in the temple of their god. While they were eating and drinking, they cursed Abimelek. 28 Then Gaal, the son of Ebed, said, ‘Who is Abimelek? And who is Shechem? Why should we citizens of Shechem be under Abimelek’s rule? Isn’t he Jerub-Baal’s son? Isn’t Zebul his helper? It would be better to serve the family of Hamor. He was the father of Shechem. So why should we serve Abimelek? 29 I wish these people were under my command. Then I would get rid of Abimelek. I would say to him, “Call out your whole army!” ’ 30 Zebul was the governor of Shechem. He heard about what Gaal, the son of Ebed, had said. So he was very angry. 31 Zebul secretly sent messengers to Abimelek. They said, ‘Gaal, the son of Ebed, has come to Shechem. His relatives have come with him. They are stirring up the city against you. 32 So come with your men during the night. Hide in the fields and wait. 33 In the morning at sunrise, attack the city. Gaal and his men will come out against you. Then take that opportunity to attack them.’ 34 So Abimelek and all his troops started out at night. They went into their hiding places near Shechem. Abimelek had separated them into four fighting groups. 35 Gaal, the son of Ebed, had already gone out. He was standing at the entrance of the city gate. He had arrived there just as Abimelek and his troops came out of their hiding places. 36 Gaal saw them. He said to Zebul, ‘Look! People are coming down from the tops of the mountains!’ Zebul replied, ‘You are wrong. Those aren’t people. They are just the shadows of the mountains.’ 37 But Gaal spoke up again. He said, ‘Look! People are coming down from the central hill. Another group is coming from the direction of the fortune tellers’ tree.’ 38 Then Zebul said to Gaal, ‘Where is your big talk now? You said, “Who is Abimelek? Why should we be under his rule?” Aren’t these the people you made fun of? Go out and fight against them!’ 39 So Gaal led the citizens out of Shechem. They fought against Abimelek. 40 He chased Gaal from the field of battle. Abimelek chased them all the way to the entrance of the city gate. Many men were killed as they ran away. 41 Abimelek stayed in Arumah. And Zebul drove Gaal and his relatives out of Shechem. 42 The next day the people of Shechem went out to work in the fields. Abimelek was told about it. 43 So he gathered his men together. He separated them into three fighting groups. Then he hid them in the fields and told them to wait. When he saw the people coming out of the city, he got up to attack them. 44 Abimelek and the men with him ran forward. They placed themselves at the entrance of the city gate. Then the other two groups attacked the people in the fields. There they struck them down. 45 Abimelek kept up his attack against the city all day long. He didn’t stop until he had captured it. Then he killed its people. He destroyed the city. He scattered salt on it to make sure that nothing would be able to grow there. 46 The citizens in the tower of Shechem heard about what was happening. So they went to the safest place in the temple of the god named El-Berith. 47 Abimelek heard that they had gathered together there. 48 He and all his men went up Mount Zalmon. He got an axe and cut off some branches. He carried them on his shoulders. He ordered the men with him to do the same thing. ‘Quick!’ he said. ‘Do what you have seen me do!’ 49 So all the men cut branches and followed Abimelek. They piled them against the place where the people had gone for safety. Then they set the place on fire with the people still inside. There were about 1,000 men and women in the tower of Shechem. All of them died. 50 Next, Abimelek went to Thebez. He surrounded it. Then he attacked it and captured it. 51 But inside the city there was a strong tower. All the people in the city had run to it for safety. All the men and women had gone into it. They had locked themselves in. They had climbed up on the roof of the tower. 52 Abimelek went to the tower and attacked it. He approached the entrance to the tower to set it on fire. 53 But a woman dropped a large millstone on him. It broke his head open. 54 He quickly called out to the man carrying his armour. He said, ‘Pull out your sword and kill me. Then people can’t say, “A woman killed him.” ’ So his servant stuck his sword through him. And Abimelek died. 55 When the Israelites saw he was dead, they went home. 56 That’s how God punished Abimelek for the evil thing he had done to his father. He had murdered his 70 brothers. 57 God also made the people of Shechem pay for all the evil things they had done. The curse of Jotham came down on them. He was the son of Jerub-Baal.

1 Abimelec, figlio di Ierubbaal, andò a Sichem dai fratelli di sua madre e parlò loro e a tutta la famiglia del padre di sua madre, e disse: 2 «Vi prego, dite ai Sichemiti, in modo che tutti odano: “Che cos’è meglio per voi, che settanta uomini, tutti figli di Ierubbaal, regnino su di voi, oppure che regni su di voi uno solo?” Ricordatevi ancora che io sono vostre ossa e vostra carne». 3 I fratelli di sua madre parlarono di lui, ripetendo a tutti i Sichemiti tutte quelle parole; e il cuore loro si inclinò a favore di Abimelec, perché dissero: «È nostro fratello». 4 Gli diedero settanta sicli d’argento, che tolsero dal tempio di Baal-Berit, con i quali Abimelec assoldò degli avventurieri audaci che lo seguirono. 5 Egli andò alla casa di suo padre, a Ofra, e uccise sopra una stessa pietra i suoi fratelli, settanta uomini, figli di Ierubbaal; ma Iotam, figlio minore di Ierubbaal, scampò perché si era nascosto. 6 Poi tutti i Sichemiti e tutta la casa di Millo si radunarono e andarono a proclamare re Abimelec, presso la quercia del monumento che si trova a Sichem.

Avvertimento di Iotam

7 Iotam, essendo stato informato della cosa, salì sulla vetta del monte Gherizim e, alzando la voce, gridò: «Ascoltatemi, Sichemiti, e vi ascolti Dio! 8 Un giorno, gli alberi si misero in cammino per ungere un re che regnasse su di loro; e dissero all’ulivo: “Regna tu su di noi”. 9 Ma l’ulivo rispose loro: “E io dovrei rinunciare al mio olio che Dio e gli uomini onorano in me per andare ad agitarmi al di sopra degli alberi?” 10 Allora gli alberi dissero al fico: “Vieni tu a regnare su di noi”. 11 Ma il fico rispose loro: “E io dovrei rinunciare alla mia dolcezza e al mio frutto squisito per andare ad agitarmi al di sopra degli alberi?” 12 Poi gli alberi dissero alla vite: “Vieni tu a regnare su di noi”. 13 Ma la vite rispose loro: “E io dovrei rinunciare al mio vino, che rallegra Dio e gli uomini, per andare ad agitarmi al di sopra degli alberi?” 14 Allora tutti gli alberi dissero al pruno: “Vieni tu a regnare su di noi”. 15 Il pruno rispose agli alberi: “Se è proprio in buona fede che volete ungermi re per regnare su di voi, venite a rifugiarvi sotto la mia ombra; se no, esca un fuoco dal pruno e divori i cedri del Libano!” 16 Ora, avete agito con fedeltà e con integrità proclamando re Abimelec? Avete agito bene verso Ierubbaal e la sua casa? Avete ricompensato mio padre di quello che ha fatto per voi? 17 Infatti egli ha combattuto per voi, ha messo a repentaglio la sua vita e vi ha liberati dalle mani di Madian, 18 mentre voi, oggi, siete insorti contro la casa di mio padre, avete ucciso i suoi figli, settanta uomini, sopra una stessa pietra, e avete proclamato re dei Sichemiti Abimelec, figlio della sua serva, perché è vostro fratello. 19 Se oggi avete agito con fedeltà e con integrità verso Ierubbaal e la sua casa, godetevi Abimelec e Abimelec si goda voi! 20 Se no, esca da Abimelec un fuoco, che divori i Sichemiti e la casa di Millo; ed esca dai Sichemiti e dalla casa di Millo un fuoco che divori Abimelec!» 21 Poi Iotam corse via, fuggì a Beer, e rimase lì per paura di Abimelec, suo fratello.

Castigo di Sichem; morte violenta di Abimelec

22 Abimelec signoreggiò sopra Israele per tre anni. 23 Poi Dio mandò un cattivo spirito fra Abimelec e i Sichemiti; e i Sichemiti non furono più fedeli ad Abimelec, 24 affinché la violenza fatta ai settanta figli di Ierubbaal ricevesse il suo castigo e il loro sangue ricadesse sopra Abimelec, loro fratello, che li aveva uccisi, e sopra i Sichemiti che lo avevano aiutato a uccidere i suoi fratelli. 25 I Sichemiti posero in agguato contro di lui, sulla cima dei monti, della gente che derubava chiunque passasse per la strada, vicino a loro. Abimelec venne a saperlo. 26 Poi Gaal, figlio di Ebed, e i suoi fratelli vennero a Sichem e i Sichemiti riposero in lui la loro fiducia. 27 Usciti nei campi vendemmiarono le loro vigne, pigiarono l’uva e fecero festa. Poi entrarono nella casa del loro dio, mangiarono, bevvero e maledissero Abimelec. 28 Gaal, figlio di Ebed, disse: «Chi è Abimelec e chi è Sichem, che dobbiamo servirlo? Non è forse il figlio di Ierubbaal? Zebul non è forse il suo commissario? Servite gli uomini di Camor, padre di Sichem! Ma noi perché serviremmo costui? 29 Ah, se questo popolo fosse ai miei ordini, io scaccerei Abimelec!» Poi disse ad Abimelec: «Rinforza il tuo esercito e fatti avanti!» 30 Zebul, governatore della città, avendo udito le parole di Gaal, figlio di Ebed, si accese d’ira 31 e mandò segretamente dei messaggeri ad Abimelec per dirgli: «Ecco, Gaal, figlio di Ebed, e i suoi fratelli sono venuti a Sichem e sobillano la città contro di te. 32 Àlzati dunque di notte, con la gente che è con te, e fa’ un’imboscata nella campagna; 33 domani mattina, allo spuntar del sole, ti sveglierai e piomberai sulla città. Quando Gaal e i suoi uomini usciranno contro di te, tu gli farai quel che sarà necessario». 34 Abimelec e tutta la gente che era con lui si alzarono di notte e si appostarono nei dintorni di Sichem, divisi in quattro schiere. 35 Intanto Gaal, figlio di Ebed, uscì e si fermò all’ingresso della porta della città; e Abimelec uscì dall’imboscata con la gente che era con lui. 36 Gaal, veduta quella gente, disse a Zebul: «C’è della gente che scende dall’alto dei monti». Zebul gli rispose: «Tu vedi l’ombra dei monti e la prendi per uomini». 37 Gaal riprese a dire: «Guarda, c’è gente che scende dalle alture del paese e una schiera che giunge per la via della quercia degli indovini». 38 Allora Zebul gli disse: «Dov’è ora la tua millanteria di quando dicevi: “Chi è Abimelec, che dobbiamo servirlo?” Non è questo il popolo che disprezzavi? Ora, fatti avanti e combatti contro di lui!» 39 Allora Gaal uscì alla testa dei Sichemiti e diede battaglia ad Abimelec. 40 Ma Abimelec lo inseguì ed egli fuggì davanti a lui, e molti uomini caddero morti fino all’ingresso della porta. 41 Abimelec si fermò ad Aruma, e Zebul scacciò Gaal e i suoi fratelli, che non poterono più rimanere a Sichem. 42 Il giorno seguente il popolo di Sichem andò nei campi; Abimelec ne fu informato. 43 Egli prese allora la sua gente, la divise in tre schiere e fece un’imboscata nei campi; e quando vide che il popolo usciva dalla città, mosse contro di loro e ne fece strage. 44 Poi Abimelec e la gente che era con lui corsero avanti e vennero a porsi all’ingresso della porta della città, mentre le altre due schiere si gettarono su tutti quelli che erano nei campi e ne fecero strage. 45 Abimelec attaccò la città per tutta la giornata, la prese e uccise la gente che vi si trovava; poi spianò la città e vi sparse sopra del sale. 46 Tutti gli abitanti della torre di Sichem, udito ciò, si ritirarono nel torrione del tempio di El-Berit. 47 Fu riferito ad Abimelec che tutti gli abitanti della torre di Sichem si erano radunati lì. 48 Allora Abimelec salì sul monte Salmon con tutta la gente che era con lui; prese una scure, tagliò un ramo d’albero, lo sollevò e se lo mise sulla spalla; poi disse a quelli che erano con lui: «Quello che mi avete visto fare fatelo presto anche voi!» 49 Tutti tagliarono dei rami, ognuno il suo, e seguirono Abimelec; posero i rami contro al torrione e lo incendiarono con quelli che vi erano dentro. Così perì tutta la gente della torre di Sichem, circa mille persone, fra uomini e donne. 50 Poi Abimelec andò a Tebes, la cinse d’assedio e se ne impadronì. 51 In mezzo alla città vi era una forte torre, dove si rifugiarono tutti gli abitanti della città, uomini e donne; vi si rinchiusero dentro e salirono sul tetto della torre. 52 Abimelec, giunto alla torre, l’attaccò e si accostò alla porta per appiccarvi il fuoco. 53 Ma una donna gettò giù un pezzo di macina sulla testa di Abimelec e gli spezzò il cranio. 54 Egli chiamò subito il giovane che gli portava le armi e gli disse: «Estrai la spada e uccidimi, affinché non si dica: “Lo ha ammazzato una donna!”». Il suo servo allora lo trafisse ed egli morì. 55 Quando gli Israeliti videro che Abimelec era morto, se ne andarono ognuno a casa sua. 56 Così Dio fece ricadere sopra Abimelec il male che egli aveva fatto contro suo padre uccidendo i suoi settanta fratelli. 57 Dio fece anche ricadere sul capo degli uomini di Sichem tutto il male che avevano fatto; e su di loro si compì la maledizione di Iotam, figlio di Ierubbaal.
