Jesus is arrested

1 When Jesus had finished praying, he left with his disciples. They crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden. Jesus and his disciples went into it. 2 Judas knew the place. He was going to hand Jesus over to his enemies. Jesus had often met in that place with his disciples. 3 So Judas came to the garden. He was guiding a group of soldiers and some officials. The chief priests and the Pharisees had sent them. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. 4 Jesus knew everything that was going to happen to him. So he went out and asked them, ‘Who do you want?’ 5 ‘Jesus of Nazareth,’ they replied. ‘I am he,’ Jesus said. Judas, who was going to hand Jesus over, was standing there with them. 6 When Jesus said, ‘I am he,’ they moved back. Then they fell to the ground. 7 He asked them again, ‘Who do you want?’ ‘Jesus of Nazareth,’ they said. 8 Jesus answered, ‘I told you I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.’ 9 This happened so that the words Jesus had spoken would come true. He had said, ‘I have not lost anyone God has given me.’ (Joh 6:39) 10 Simon Peter had a sword and pulled it out. He struck the high priest’s slave and cut off his right ear. The slave’s name was Malchus. 11 Jesus commanded Peter, ‘Put your sword away! Shouldn’t I drink the cup of suffering the Father has given me?’ 12 Then the group of soldiers, their commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They tied him up 13 and brought him first to Annas. He was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest at that time. 14 Caiaphas had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.

Peter says he is not Jesus’ disciple

15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. The high priest knew the other disciple. So that disciple went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard. 16 But Peter had to wait outside by the door. The other disciple came back. He was the one the high priest knew. He spoke to the servant woman who was on duty there. Then he brought Peter in. 17 She asked Peter, ‘You aren’t one of Jesus’ disciples too, are you?’ ‘I am not,’ he replied. 18 It was cold. The slaves and officials stood around a fire. They had made it to keep warm. Peter was also standing with them. He was warming himself.

The high priest questions Jesus

19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus. He asked him about his disciples and his teaching. 20 ‘I have spoken openly to the world,’ Jesus replied. ‘I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I didn’t say anything in secret. 21 Why question me? Ask the people who heard me. They certainly know what I said.’ 22 When Jesus said that, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. ‘Is this any way to answer the high priest?’ he asked. 23 ‘Have I said something wrong?’ Jesus replied. ‘If I have, then tell everyone what it was. But if I spoke the truth, why did you hit me?’ 24 Annas sent him, tied up, to Caiaphas, the high priest.

Peter again says he is not Jesus’ disciple

25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself by the fire. So they asked him, ‘You aren’t one of Jesus’ disciples too, are you?’ He said, ‘I am not.’ 26 One of the high priest’s slaves was a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off. He said to Peter, ‘Didn’t I see you with Jesus in the garden?’ 27 Again Peter said no. At that exact moment a cockerel began to crow.

Jesus is brought to Pilate

28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning. The Jewish leaders did not want to be made ‘unclean’. They wanted to be able to eat the Passover meal. So they did not enter the palace. 29 Pilate came out to them. He asked, ‘What charges are you bringing against this man?’ 30 ‘He has committed crimes,’ they replied. ‘If he hadn’t, we would not have handed him over to you.’ 31 Pilate said, ‘Take him yourselves. Judge him by your own law.’ ‘But we don’t have the right to put anyone to death,’ they complained. 32 This happened so that what Jesus said about how he was going to die would come true. 33 Then Pilate went back inside the palace. He ordered Jesus to be brought to him. Pilate asked him, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ 34 ‘Is that your own idea?’ Jesus asked. ‘Or did others talk to you about me?’ 35 ‘Am I a Jew?’ Pilate replied. ‘Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?’ 36 Jesus said, ‘My kingdom is not from this world. If it were, those who serve me would fight. They would try to keep the Jewish leaders from arresting me. My kingdom is from another place.’ 37 ‘So you are a king, then!’ said Pilate. Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. In fact, that’s the reason I was born. I was born and came into the world to be a witness to the truth. Everyone who is on the side of truth listens to me.’ 38 ‘What is truth?’ Pilate replied. Then Pilate went out again to the Jews gathered there. He said, ‘I find no basis for any charge against him. 39 But you have a practice at Passover time. At that time, you ask me to set one prisoner free for you. Do you want me to set “the king of the Jews” free?’ 40 They shouted back, ‘No! Not him! Give us Barabbas!’ Barabbas had taken part in an armed struggle against the country’s rulers.

Gesù viene tradito e arrestato

1 Dette queste cose, Gesù uscì con i suoi discepoli e andò di là dal torrente Chidron, dove c’era un giardino, nel quale entrò con i suoi discepoli. 2 Anche Giuda, colui che lo tradiva, conosceva quel luogo, perché Gesù si era spesso riunito là con i suoi discepoli. 3 Giuda dunque, presa la coorte e le guardie mandate dai capi dei sacerdoti e dai farisei, andò là con lanterne, torce e armi. 4 Ma Gesù, ben sapendo tutto quello che stava per accadergli, uscì e chiese loro: «Chi cercate?» 5 Gli risposero: «Gesù il Nazareno!» Egli disse loro: «Io sono^[1]». Giuda, che lo tradiva, era anch’egli là con loro. 6 Appena Gesù ebbe detto loro: «Io sono», indietreggiarono e caddero in terra. 7 Egli dunque domandò loro di nuovo: «Chi cercate?» Essi dissero: «Gesù il Nazareno». 8 Gesù rispose: «Vi ho detto che sono io; se dunque cercate me, lasciate andare questi». 9 E ciò affinché si adempisse la parola che egli aveva detta: «Di quelli che tu mi hai dati, non ne ho perduto nessuno». 10 Allora Simon Pietro, che aveva una spada, la prese e colpì il servo del sommo sacerdote, recidendogli l’orecchio destro. Quel servo si chiamava Malco. 11 Ma Gesù disse a Pietro: «Rimetti la spada nel fodero; non berrò forse il calice che il Padre mi ha dato?»

Gesù è fatto comparire davanti al sommo sacerdote

12 La coorte, dunque, il tribuno e le guardie dei Giudei presero Gesù e lo legarono, 13 e lo condussero prima da Anna, perché era suocero di Caiafa, che era sommo sacerdote di quell’anno. 14 Ora Caiafa era quello che aveva consigliato ai Giudei essere cosa utile che un uomo solo morisse per il popolo.

Gesù rinnegato tre volte da Pietro

15 Intanto Simon Pietro e un altro discepolo seguivano Gesù; e quel discepolo era noto al sommo sacerdote, ed entrò con Gesù nel cortile del sommo sacerdote; 16 Pietro invece stava fuori, alla porta. Allora quell’altro discepolo, che era noto al sommo sacerdote, uscì, parlò con la portinaia e fece entrare Pietro. 17 La serva portinaia dunque disse a Pietro: «Non sei anche tu dei discepoli di quest’uomo?» Egli rispose: «Non lo sono». 18 Ora i servi e le guardie, siccome faceva freddo, avevano acceso un fuoco e stavano là a scaldarsi, e anche Pietro stava con loro a scaldarsi. 19 Il sommo sacerdote dunque interrogò Gesù intorno ai suoi discepoli e alla sua dottrina. 20 Gesù gli rispose: «Io ho parlato apertamente al mondo; ho sempre insegnato nelle sinagoghe e nel tempio, dove tutti i Giudei si radunano, e non ho detto nulla in segreto. 21 Perché mi interroghi? Domanda a quelli che mi hanno udito, quello che ho detto loro; ecco, essi sanno le cose che ho dette». 22 Ma appena ebbe detto questo, una delle guardie che gli stava vicino dette uno schiaffo a Gesù, dicendo: «Così rispondi al sommo sacerdote?» 23 Gesù gli rispose: «Se ho parlato male, dimostra il male che ho detto; ma se ho parlato bene, perché mi percuoti?» 24 Quindi Anna lo mandò legato a Caiafa, sommo sacerdote. 25 Intanto Simon Pietro stava là a scaldarsi, e gli dissero: «Non sei anche tu uno dei suoi discepoli?» Egli lo negò e disse: «Non lo sono». 26 Uno dei servi del sommo sacerdote, parente di quello a cui Pietro aveva tagliato l’orecchio, disse: «Non ti ho forse visto nel giardino con lui?» 27 E Pietro da capo lo negò, e subito il gallo cantò.

Gesù davanti a Pilato

28 Poi, da Caiafa, condussero Gesù nel pretorio. Era mattina, ed essi non entrarono nel pretorio per non contaminarsi^[2] e poter così mangiare la Pasqua. 29 Pilato dunque andò fuori verso di loro e domandò: «Quale accusa portate contro quest’uomo?» 30 Essi gli risposero: «Se costui non fosse un malfattore, non te lo avremmo dato nelle mani». 31 Pilato quindi disse loro: «Prendetelo voi e giudicatelo secondo la vostra legge». I Giudei gli dissero: «A noi non è lecito far morire nessuno». 32 E ciò affinché si adempisse la parola che Gesù aveva detta, indicando di quale morte doveva morire. 33 Pilato dunque rientrò nel pretorio; chiamò Gesù e gli disse: «Sei tu il re dei Giudei?» 34 Gesù rispose: «Dici questo di tuo, oppure altri te l’hanno detto di me?» 35 Pilato gli rispose: «Sono io forse Giudeo? La tua nazione e i capi dei sacerdoti ti hanno consegnato a me; che cosa hai fatto?» 36 Gesù rispose: «Il mio regno non è di questo mondo; se il mio regno fosse di questo mondo, i miei servitori combatterebbero perché io non fossi consegnato ai Giudei; ma ora il mio regno non è di qui». 37 Allora Pilato gli disse: «Ma dunque, sei tu re?» Gesù rispose: «Tu lo dici, sono re; io sono nato per questo e per questo sono venuto nel mondo: per testimoniare della verità. Chiunque è dalla verità ascolta la mia voce». 38 Pilato gli disse: «Che cos’è verità?» E detto questo, uscì di nuovo verso i Giudei e disse loro: «Io non trovo colpa in lui.

Liberazione di Barabba; condanna di Gesù

39 Ma voi avete l’usanza che io vi liberi uno per la Pasqua; volete dunque che vi liberi il re dei Giudei?» 40 Allora gridarono di nuovo: «Non costui, ma Barabba!» Ora, Barabba era un ladrone.
