1Jesus told his disciples a story. He wanted to show them that they should always pray and not give up.2He said, ‘In a certain town there was a judge. He didn’t have any respect for God or care about what people thought.3A widow lived in that town. She came to the judge again and again. She kept begging him, “Make things right for me. Someone is treating me badly.”4‘For some time the judge refused. But finally he said to himself, “I don’t have any respect for God. I don’t care about what people think.5But this widow keeps bothering me. So I will see that things are made right for her. If I don’t, she will someday come and attack me!” ’6The Lord said, ‘Listen to what the unfair judge says.7God’s chosen people cry out to him day and night. Won’t he make things right for them? Will he keep putting them off?8I tell you, God will see that things are made right for them. He will make sure it happens quickly. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find people on earth who have faith?’
The story of the Pharisee and the tax collector
9Jesus told a story to some people who were sure they were right with God. They looked down on everyone else.10He said to them, ‘Two men went up to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee. The other was a tax collector.11The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed. “God, I thank you that I am not like other people,” he said. “I am not like robbers or those who do other evil things. I am not like those who commit adultery. I am not even like this tax collector.12I fast twice a week. And I give a tenth of all I get.”13‘But the tax collector stood further away than the Pharisee. He would not even look up to heaven. He brought his hand to his heart and prayed. He said, “God, have mercy on me. I am a sinner.”14‘I tell you, the tax collector went home accepted by God. But not the Pharisee. All those who lift themselves up will be made humble. And those who make themselves humble will be lifted up.’
Little children are brought to Jesus
15People were also bringing babies to Jesus. They wanted him to place his hands on the babies. When the disciples saw this, they told the people to stop.16But Jesus asked the children to come to him. ‘Let the little children come to me,’ he said. ‘Don’t keep them away. God’s kingdom belongs to people like them.17What I’m about to tell you is true. Anyone who will not receive God’s kingdom like a little child will never enter it.’
Rich people and the kingdom of God
18A certain ruler asked Jesus a question. ‘Good teacher’, he said, ‘what must I do to receive eternal life?’19‘Why do you call me good?’ Jesus answered. ‘No one is good except God.20You know what the commandments say. “Do not commit adultery. Do not commit murder. Do not steal. Do not be a false witness. Honour your father and mother.” ’ (Ex 20:12; De 5:16)21‘I have obeyed all those commandments since I was a boy,’ the ruler said.22When Jesus heard this, he said to him, ‘You are still missing one thing. Sell everything you have. Give the money to those who are poor. You will have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.’23When the ruler heard this, he became very sad. He was very rich.24Jesus looked at him. Then he said, ‘How hard it is for rich people to enter God’s kingdom!25Is it hard for a camel to go through the eye of a needle? It is even harder for someone who is rich to enter God’s kingdom!’26Those who heard this asked, ‘Then who can be saved?’27Jesus replied, ‘Things that are impossible with people are possible with God.’28Peter said to him, ‘We have left everything we had in order to follow you!’29‘What I’m about to tell you is true,’ Jesus said to them. ‘Has anyone left home or wife or husband or brothers or sisters or parents or children for God’s kingdom?30They will receive many times as much in this world. In the world to come they will receive eternal life.’
Jesus speaks a third time about his coming death
31Jesus took the 12 disciples to one side. He told them, ‘We are going up to Jerusalem. Everything that the prophets wrote about the Son of Man will come true.32He will be handed over to the Gentiles. They will make fun of him. They will laugh at him and spit on him.33They will whip him and kill him. On the third day, he will rise from the dead!’34The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them. So they didn’t know what Jesus was talking about.
A blind beggar receives his sight
35Jesus was approaching Jericho. A blind man was sitting by the side of the road begging.36The blind man heard the crowd going by. He asked what was happening.37They told him, ‘Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.’38So the blind man called out, ‘Jesus! Son of David! Have mercy on me!’39Those who led the way commanded him to stop. They told him to be quiet. But he shouted even louder, ‘Son of David! Have mercy on me!’40Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When the man came near, Jesus spoke to him.41‘What do you want me to do for you?’ Jesus asked. ‘Lord, I want to be able to see,’ the blind man replied.42Jesus said to him, ‘Receive your sight. Your faith has healed you.’43Right away he could see. He followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.
1Er sagte ihnen aber ein Gleichnis davon, dass man allezeit beten und nicht nachlassen sollte, (Ro 12:12; 1Th 5:17)2und sprach: Es war ein Richter in einer Stadt, der fürchtete sich nicht vor Gott und scheute sich vor keinem Menschen.3Es war aber eine Witwe in derselben Stadt, die kam immer wieder zu ihm und sprach: Schaffe mir Recht gegen meinen Widersacher!4Und er wollte lange nicht. Danach aber dachte er bei sich selbst: Wenn ich mich schon vor Gott nicht fürchte noch vor keinem Menschen scheue,5will ich doch dieser Witwe, weil sie mir so viel Mühe macht, Recht schaffen, damit sie nicht zuletzt komme und mir ins Gesicht schlage. (Lu 11:7)6Da sprach der Herr: Hört, was der ungerechte Richter sagt!7Sollte aber Gott nicht Recht schaffen seinen Auserwählten, die zu ihm Tag und Nacht rufen, und sollte er bei ihnen lange warten?8Ich sage euch: Er wird ihnen Recht schaffen in Kürze. Doch wenn der Menschensohn kommen wird, wird er dann Glauben finden auf Erden?
Der Pharisäer und der Zöllner
9Er sagte aber zu einigen, die überzeugt waren, fromm und gerecht zu sein, und verachteten die andern, dies Gleichnis: (Lu 16:15; Ro 10:3)10Es gingen zwei Menschen hinauf in den Tempel, um zu beten, der eine ein Pharisäer, der andere ein Zöllner.11Der Pharisäer stand und betete bei sich selbst so: Ich danke dir, Gott, dass ich nicht bin wie die andern Leute, Räuber, Ungerechte, Ehebrecher, oder auch wie dieser Zöllner.12Ich faste zweimal in der Woche und gebe den Zehnten von allem, was ich einnehme. (Mt 23:23; Lu 11:42)13Der Zöllner aber stand ferne, wollte auch die Augen nicht aufheben zum Himmel, sondern schlug an seine Brust und sprach: Gott, sei mir Sünder gnädig! (Ps 51:3)14Ich sage euch: Dieser ging gerechtfertigt hinab in sein Haus, nicht jener. Denn wer sich selbst erhöht, der wird erniedrigt werden; und wer sich selbst erniedrigt, der wird erhöht werden. (Mt 21:31; Mt 23:12; Lu 14:11)
Jesus und die Kinder
15Sie brachten auch kleine Kinder zu ihm, dass er sie anrühren sollte. Als das aber die Jünger sahen, fuhren sie sie an. (Mt 19:13; Mr 10:13)16Aber Jesus rief sie zu sich und sprach: Lasset die Kinder zu mir kommen und wehret ihnen nicht, denn solchen gehört das Reich Gottes. (Lu 9:47)17Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wer nicht das Reich Gottes annimmt wie ein Kind, der wird nicht hineinkommen. (Mt 18:3)
Reichtum und Nachfolge
18Und es fragte ihn ein Oberer und sprach: Guter Meister, was muss ich tun, dass ich das ewige Leben ererbe? (Mt 19:16; Mr 10:17; Lu 10:25)19Jesus aber sprach zu ihm: Was nennst du mich gut? Niemand ist gut als Gott allein. (Ps 25:8)20Du kennst die Gebote: »Du sollst nicht ehebrechen; du sollst nicht töten; du sollst nicht stehlen; du sollst nicht falsch Zeugnis reden; du sollst deinen Vater und deine Mutter ehren!« (Ex 20:12; De 5:16)21Er aber sprach: Das habe ich alles gehalten von Jugend auf.22Als Jesus das hörte, sprach er zu ihm: Es fehlt dir noch eines. Verkaufe alles, was du hast, und gib’s den Armen, so wirst du einen Schatz im Himmel haben, und komm und folge mir nach! (Mt 6:20; Lu 12:33)23Als er das hörte, wurde er traurig; denn er war sehr reich.24Da aber Jesus sah, dass er traurig geworden war, sprach er: Wie schwer kommen die Reichen in das Reich Gottes! (Lu 6:24)25Denn es ist leichter, dass ein Kamel durch ein Nadelöhr gehe, als dass ein Reicher in das Reich Gottes komme.26Da sprachen, die das hörten: Wer kann dann selig werden?27Er aber sprach: Was bei den Menschen unmöglich ist, das ist bei Gott möglich. (Ge 18:14; Job 42:2; Lu 1:37)
Der Lohn der Nachfolge
28Da sprach Petrus: Siehe, wir haben, was wir hatten, verlassen und sind dir nachgefolgt. (Mt 19:27; Mr 10:28; Lu 5:11)29Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Es ist niemand, der Haus oder Frau oder Brüder oder Eltern oder Kinder verlässt um des Reiches Gottes willen, (Lu 14:26)30der es nicht vielfach wieder empfange in dieser Zeit und in der kommenden Welt das ewige Leben.
Die dritte Ankündigung von Jesu Leiden und Auferstehung
31Er nahm aber zu sich die Zwölf und sprach zu ihnen: Seht, wir gehen hinauf nach Jerusalem, und es wird alles vollendet werden, was geschrieben ist durch die Propheten von dem Menschensohn. (Isa 52:13; Mt 20:17; Mr 10:32; Lu 9:22; Lu 9:44; Lu 9:51; Lu 22:37)32Denn er wird überantwortet werden den Heiden, und er wird verspottet und misshandelt und angespien werden,33und sie werden ihn geißeln und töten; und am dritten Tage wird er auferstehen.34Sie aber verstanden nichts davon, und der Sinn der Rede war ihnen verborgen, und sie begriffen nicht, was damit gesagt war. (Lu 9:45; Lu 24:45)
Die Heilung eines Blinden bei Jericho
35Es geschah aber, als er in die Nähe von Jericho kam, da saß ein Blinder am Wege und bettelte. (Mt 20:29; Mr 10:46)36Als er aber die Menge hörte, die vorbeiging, forschte er, was das wäre.37Da verkündeten sie ihm, Jesus von Nazareth[1] gehe vorüber. (Ac 2:22; Ac 3:6)38Und er rief: Jesus, du Sohn Davids, erbarme dich meiner! (Mt 9:27; Lu 1:27)39Die aber vornean gingen, fuhren ihn an, er sollte schweigen. Er aber schrie noch viel mehr: Du Sohn Davids, erbarme dich meiner!40Jesus aber blieb stehen und befahl, ihn zu sich zu führen. Als er aber näher kam, fragte er ihn:41Was willst du, dass ich für dich tun soll? Er sprach: Herr, dass ich sehen kann.42Und Jesus sprach zu ihm: Sei sehend! Dein Glaube hat dir geholfen. (Lu 7:50; Lu 8:48; Lu 17:19)43Und sogleich wurde er sehend und folgte ihm nach und pries Gott. Und alles Volk, das es sah, lobte Gott.
