New International Reader’s Version

1 Here is the vision about Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah saw. It came to him when Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah were ruling. They were kings of Judah. Isaiah was the son of Amoz.

The nation refuses to obey the Lord

2 Listen to me, you heavens! Pay attention to me, earth! The LORD has said, ‘I raised children. I brought them up. But they have refused to obey me. 3 The ox knows its master. The donkey knows where its owner feeds it. But Israel does not know me. My people do not understand me.’ 4 How terrible it will be for this sinful nation! They are loaded down with guilt. They are people who do nothing but evil. They are children who are always sinning. They have deserted the LORD. They have turned against the Holy One of Israel. They have turned their backs on him. 5 Israel, why do you want to be beaten all the time? Why do you always refuse to obey the LORD? Your head is covered with wounds. Your whole heart is weak. 6 There isn’t a healthy spot on your body. You are not healthy from the bottom of your feet to the top of your head. You have nothing but wounds, cuts and open sores. They haven’t been cleaned up or bandaged or treated with olive oil. 7 Your country has been deserted. Your cities have been burned down. The food from your fields is being eaten up by outsiders. They are doing it right in front of you. Your land has been completely destroyed. It looks as if strangers have taken it over. 8 The city of Zion is left like a shed where someone stands guard in a vineyard. It is left like a hut in a cucumber field. It’s like a city being attacked. 9 The LORD who rules over all has let some people live through that time of trouble. If he hadn’t, we would have become like Sodom. We would have been like Gomorrah. 10 Rulers of Sodom, hear the LORD’s message. People of Gomorrah, listen to the instruction of our God. 11 ‘Do you think I need any more of your sacrifices?’ asks the LORD. ‘I have more than enough of your burnt offerings. I have more than enough of rams and the fat of your fattest animals. I do not find any pleasure in the blood of your bulls, lambs and goats. 12 Who asked you to bring all these animals when you come to worship me? Who asked you and your animals to walk all over my courtyards? 13 Stop bringing offerings that do not mean anything to me! I hate your incense. I can’t stand your worthless gatherings. I can’t stand the way you celebrate your New Moon feasts, Sabbath days and special services. 14 Your New Moon feasts and your other appointed feasts I hate with my whole being. They have become a heavy load to me. I am tired of carrying it. 15 You might spread out your hands towards me when you pray. But I do not look at you. You might even offer many prayers. But I am not listening to them. Your hands are covered with the blood of the people you have murdered. 16 So wash and make yourselves clean. Get your evil actions out of my sight! Stop doing what is wrong! 17 Learn to do what is right! Treat people fairly. Help those who are treated badly. Stand up in court for children whose fathers have died. And do the same thing for widows. 18 ‘Come. Let us settle this matter,’ says the LORD. ‘Even though your sins are bright red, they will be as white as snow. Even though they are deep red, they will be white like wool. 19 But you have to be willing to change and obey me. If you are, you will eat the good things that grow on the land. 20 But if you are not willing to obey me, you will be killed by swords.’ The LORD has spoken. 21 See how the faithful city of Jerusalem has become like a prostitute! Once it was full of people who treated others fairly. Those who did what was right used to live in it. But now murderers live there! 22 Jerusalem, your silver isn’t pure anymore. Your best wine has been made weak with water. 23 Your rulers refuse to obey the LORD. They join forces with robbers. All of them love to accept money from those who want special favours. They are always looking for gifts from other people. They don’t stand up in court for children whose fathers have died. They don’t do it for widows either. 24 The Lord is the Mighty One of Israel. The LORD who rules over all announces, ‘Israel, you have become my enemies. I will act against you in my anger. I will pay you back for what you have done. 25 I will turn my power against you. I will make you completely “clean”. I will remove everything that is not pure. 26 I will give you leaders like the ones you had long ago. I will give you rulers like those you had at the beginning. Then you will be called the City That Does What Is Right. You will also be called the Faithful City.’ 27 Zion will be saved when justice is done. Those who are sorry for their sins will be saved when what is right is done. 28 But sinners and those who refuse to obey the LORD will be destroyed. And those who desert the LORD will die. 29 ‘Israel, you take delight in worshipping among the sacred oak trees. You will be full of shame for doing that. You have chosen to worship in the sacred gardens. You will be dishonoured for doing that. 30 You will be like an oak tree whose leaves are dying. You will be like a garden that doesn’t have any water. 31 Your strongest men will become like dry pieces of wood. Their worship of other gods will be the spark that lights the fire. Everything will be burned. No one will be there to put the fire out.’

Gottes Anklage gegen das abtrünnige Volk

2 Höret, ihr Himmel, und Erde, nimm zu Ohren, denn der HERR redet: Ich habe Kinder großgezogen und hochgebracht, und sie sind von mir abgefallen! (De 32:1) 3 Ein Ochse kennt seinen Herrn und ein Esel die Krippe seines Herrn; aber Israel kennt’s nicht, und mein Volk versteht’s nicht. 4 Wehe dem sündigen Volk, dem Volk mit Schuld beladen, dem boshaften Geschlecht, den verderbten Kindern, die den HERRN verlassen, den Heiligen Israels lästern, die abgefallen sind! (Isa 30:1; Isa 30:9) 5 Wohin soll man euch noch schlagen, die ihr doch weiter im Abfall verharrt? Das ganze Haupt ist krank, das ganze Herz ist matt. (Jer 2:30) 6 Von der Fußsohle bis zum Haupt ist nichts Gesundes an ihm, sondern Beulen und Striemen und frische Wunden, die nicht gereinigt noch verbunden noch mit Öl gelindert sind. (De 28:35) 7 Euer Land ist verwüstet, eure Städte sind mit Feuer verbrannt; Fremde verzehren eure Äcker vor euren Augen; alles ist verwüstet wie durch Fremde verheert. 8 Übrig geblieben ist allein die Tochter Zion wie ein Häuslein im Weinberg, wie eine Nachthütte im Gurkenfeld, wie eine belagerte Stadt. 9 Hätte uns der HERR Zebaoth nicht einen geringen Rest übrig gelassen, so wären wir wie Sodom und gleich wie Gomorra. (Ge 19:24; Ro 9:29) 10 Höret des HERRN Wort, ihr Herren von Sodom! Nimm zu Ohren die Weisung unsres Gottes, du Volk von Gomorra! 11 Was soll mir die Menge eurer Opfer?, spricht der HERR. Ich bin satt der Brandopfer von Widdern und des Fettes von Mastkälbern und habe kein Gefallen am Blut der Stiere, der Lämmer und Böcke. (Ps 40:7; Isa 66:3; Jer 6:20; Ho 8:13; Am 5:21)

12 Wenn ihr kommt, zu erscheinen vor meinem Angesicht – wer fordert denn von euch, dass ihr meine Vorhöfe zertretet? 13 Bringt nicht mehr dar so vergebliche Speisopfer! Das Räucherwerk ist mir ein Gräuel! Neumond und Sabbat, den Ruf zur Versammlung – Frevel und Festversammlung – ich mag es nicht! (Nu 10:10) 14 Meine Seele ist feind euren Neumonden und Jahresfesten; sie sind mir eine Last, ich bin’s müde, sie zu tragen. 15 Und wenn ihr auch eure Hände ausbreitet, verberge ich doch meine Augen vor euch; und wenn ihr auch viel betet, höre ich euch doch nicht; denn eure Hände sind voll Blut. 16 Wascht euch, reinigt euch, tut eure bösen Taten aus meinen Augen. Lasst ab vom Bösen, 17 lernt Gutes tun! Trachtet nach Recht, helft den Unterdrückten, schafft den Waisen Recht, führt der Witwen Sache! (Jer 7:5) 18 So kommt denn und lasst uns miteinander rechten, spricht der HERR. Wenn eure Sünde auch blutrot ist, soll sie doch schneeweiß werden, und wenn sie rot ist wie Purpur, soll sie doch wie Wolle werden. (Ps 51:9; Isa 44:22) 19 Wollt ihr mir gehorchen, so sollt ihr des Landes Gut genießen. (Le 25:18) 20 Weigert ihr euch aber und seid ungehorsam, so sollt ihr vom Schwert gefressen werden; denn der Mund des HERRN hat’s geredet. (Le 26:25; Isa 40:5; Isa 58:14)

Gottes Gericht zur Läuterung Jerusalems

21 Ach, wie ist zur Hure geworden die treue Stadt! Sie war voll Recht, Gerechtigkeit wohnte darin; nun aber – Mörder. 22 Dein Silber ist Schlacke geworden und dein Wein mit Wasser verfälscht. (Jer 6:28; Eze 22:18) 23 Deine Fürsten sind Abtrünnige und Diebsgesellen, sie nehmen alle gern Geschenke an und trachten nach Gaben. Den Waisen schaffen sie nicht Recht, und der Witwen Sache kommt nicht vor sie. 24 Darum spricht der Herr, der HERR Zebaoth, der Mächtige Israels: Wehe! Ich werde mir Trost schaffen an meinen Feinden und mich rächen an meinen Widersachern 25 und will meine Hand wider dich kehren und wie mit Lauge ausschmelzen, was Schlacke ist, und all dein Zinn ausscheiden. (Ps 119:119) 26 Und ich will dir wieder Richter geben, wie sie vormals waren, und Ratsherren wie im Anfang. Alsdann wirst du eine Stadt der Gerechtigkeit und eine treue Stadt heißen. (Zec 8:3) 27 Zion wird durch Recht erlöst werden, und wer dorthin umkehrt, durch Gerechtigkeit. (Isa 46:13) 28 Die Übertreter aber und Sünder werden allesamt zerbrochen werden, und die den HERRN verlassen, werden umkommen. 29 Denn sie sollen zuschanden werden wegen der Eichen, an denen ihr eure Lust habt, und ihr sollt schamrot werden wegen der Gärten, die ihr erwählt habt. (Isa 57:5; Isa 65:3; Isa 66:17) 30 Denn ihr werdet sein wie eine Eiche mit dürren Blättern und wie ein Garten ohne Wasser; 31 und der Starke wird sein wie Werg und sein Tun wie ein Funke, und beides wird miteinander brennen und niemand löscht.
