A warning against doing things for the wrong reasons
1Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples.2‘The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat,’ he said.3‘So you must be careful to do everything they say. But don’t do what they do. They don’t practise what they preach.4They tie up heavy loads that are hard to carry. Then they put them on other people’s shoulders. But they themselves aren’t willing to lift a finger to move them.5‘Everything they do is done for others to see. On their foreheads and arms they wear little boxes that hold Scripture verses. They make the boxes very wide. And they make the tassels on their coats very long.6They love to sit down in the place of honour at dinners. They also love to have the most important seats in the synagogues.7They love to be greeted with respect in the markets. They love it when people call them “Rabbi”.8‘But you shouldn’t be called “Rabbi”. You have only one Teacher, and you are all brothers.9Do not call anyone on earth “father”. You have one Father, and he is in heaven.10You shouldn’t be called “teacher”. You have one Teacher, and he is the Messiah.11The most important person among you will be your servant.12People who lift themselves up will be made humble. And people who make themselves humble will be lifted up.
How terrible for the teachers of the law and the Pharisees
13-14‘How terrible it will be for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter. And you will not let those enter who are trying to.15‘How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You travel everywhere to win one person to your faith. Then you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.16‘How terrible for you, blind guides! You say, “If anyone makes a promise in the name of the temple, it means nothing. But anyone who makes a promise in the name of the gold of the temple must keep that promise.”17You are blind and foolish! Which is more important? Is it the gold? Or is it the temple that makes the gold holy?18You also say, “If anyone makes a promise in the name of the altar, it means nothing. But anyone who makes a promise in the name of the gift on the altar must keep that promise.”19You are blind! Which is more important? Is it the gift? Or is it the altar that makes the gift holy?20So anyone making a promise in the name of the altar makes a promise in the name of it and everything on it.21And anyone making a promise in the name of the temple makes a promise in the name of it and the one who lives in it.22And anyone making a promise in the name of heaven makes a promise in the name of God’s throne and the one who sits on it.23‘How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You give God a tenth of your spices, like mint, dill and cummin. But you have not practised the more important things of the law, which are fairness, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practised the last things without failing to do the first.24You blind guides! You remove the smallest insect from your food. But you swallow a whole camel!25‘How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You clean the outside of a cup and dish. But on the inside you are full of greed. You only want to satisfy yourselves.26Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish. Then the outside will also be clean.27‘How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You are like tombs that are painted white. They look beautiful on the outside. But on the inside they are full of the bones of the dead. They are also full of other things that are not pure and “clean”.28It is the same with you. On the outside you seem to be doing what is right. But on the inside you are full of what is wrong. You pretend to be what you are not.29‘How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees! You pretenders! You build tombs for the prophets. You decorate the graves of the godly.30And you say, “If we had lived in the days of those who lived before us, we wouldn’t have done what they did. We wouldn’t have helped to kill the prophets.”31So you are witnesses against yourselves. You admit that you are the children of those who murdered the prophets.32So go ahead and finish the sins that those who lived before you started!33‘You nest of poisonous snakes! How will you escape from being sentenced to hell?34So I am sending you prophets, wise people, and teachers. You will kill some of them. You will nail some to a cross. Others you will whip in your synagogues. You will chase them from town to town.35So you will pay for all the godly people’s blood spilled on earth. I mean from the blood of godly Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berekiah. Zechariah was the one you murdered between the temple and the altar.36What I’m about to tell you is true. All this will happen to those who are now living.37‘Jerusalem! Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and throw stones in order to kill those who are sent to you. Many times I have wanted to gather your people together. I have wanted to be like a hen who gathers her chicks under her wings. And you would not let me!38Look, your house is left empty.39I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.” ’ (Ps 118:26)
1Darauf wandte sich Jesus an die Menschenmenge und an seine Jünger (Mr 12:38; Lu 11:43; Lu 11:46; Lu 20:45)2und sagte: »Die Gesetzeslehrer und die Pharisäer sind die berufenen Ausleger des Gesetzes, das Mose euch gegeben hat.[1]3Ihr müsst ihnen also gehorchen und tun, was sie sagen. Aber nach ihrem Verhalten dürft ihr euch nicht richten; denn sie selber tun nicht, was sie lehren. (Ro 2:21)4Sie schnüren schwere, kaum tragbare Lasten zusammen und laden sie den Menschen auf die Schultern, aber sie selbst machen keinen Finger krumm, um sie zu tragen.5Alles, was sie tun, tun sie nur, um von den Leuten gesehen zu werden. Sie tragen auffällig breite Gebetsriemen und besonders lange Quasten an ihren Kleidern. (Ex 13:9; De 6:8; De 22:12; Mt 6:1)6Bei Festmählern sitzen sie auf den Ehrenplätzen und beim Gottesdienst in der vordersten Reihe. (Lu 14:7)7Sie haben es gern, wenn die Leute sie auf der Straße respektvoll grüßen und sie als ›ehrwürdiger Lehrer‹[2] anreden.8Aber ihr sollt euch nicht ›ehrwürdiger Lehrer‹ nennen lassen; denn ihr seid untereinander alle Brüder und Schwestern,[3] und nur einer ist euer Lehrer. (Joh 13:13)9Auch sollt ihr hier auf der Erde keinen von euch ›Vater‹ nennen; denn nur einer ist euer Vater: der im Himmel.10Ihr sollt euch auch nicht ›Lehrmeister‹ nennen lassen, denn auch Lehrmeister ist bei euch nur einer: Christus, der versprochene Retter.11Wer unter euch am größten ist, soll euer Diener sein. (Mt 20:26; Mr 9:35; Lu 9:48)12Denn wer sich selbst groß macht, wird von Gott gedemütigt, und wer sich selbst gering achtet, wird von ihm zu Ehren gebracht.« (Ps 75:8; Mt 18:4; Lu 1:52; Lu 14:11; Lu 18:14)
Sieben Weherufe über die Gesetzeslehrer und Pharisäer
13-14»Weh euch Gesetzeslehrern und Pharisäern! Ihr Scheinheiligen! Ihr versperrt den Zugang zur neuen Welt Gottes[4] vor den Menschen. Ihr selbst geht nicht hinein und ihr hindert alle, die hineinwollen.[5] (Lu 11:39; Lu 11:44; Lu 11:47; Lu 11:52)15Weh euch Gesetzeslehrern und Pharisäern! Ihr Scheinheiligen! Ihr reist um die halbe Welt, um auch nur einen einzigen Anhänger zu gewinnen, und wenn ihr einen gefunden habt, dann macht ihr ihn zu einem Anwärter der Hölle, der doppelt so schlimm ist wie ihr.16Weh euch! Ihr wollt andere führen und seid selbst blind. Ihr sagt: ›Wer beim Tempel schwört, ist nicht an den Schwur gebunden; nur wer beim Gold im Tempel schwört, muss seinen Schwur halten.‹ (Mt 5:33; Mt 15:14)17Töricht und blind seid ihr! Was ist denn wichtiger: das Gold oder der Tempel, durch den das Gold erst heilig wird?18Ihr sagt auch: ›Wenn einer beim Altar schwört, braucht er seinen Schwur nicht zu halten, nur wenn er beim Opfer auf dem Altar schwört.‹19Ihr Verblendeten! Was ist wichtiger: die Opfergabe oder der Altar, der das Opfer erst heilig macht?20Wer beim Altar schwört, der schwört doch zugleich bei allem, was darauf liegt,21und wer beim Tempel schwört, der schwört damit auch bei Gott, der dort wohnt. (1Ki 8:13)22Und wenn einer beim Himmel schwört, dann schwört er beim Thron Gottes und bei Gott, der darauf sitzt.23Weh euch Gesetzeslehrern und Pharisäern! Ihr Scheinheiligen! Ihr gebt Gott den zehnten Teil von allem, sogar noch von Gewürzen wie Minze, Dill und Kümmel; aber um das Wichtigste an seinem Gesetz, um Gerechtigkeit, Barmherzigkeit und Treue, darum kümmert ihr euch nicht. Dies solltet ihr tun, ohne das andere zu lassen! (Le 27:30; Mic 6:8; Zec 7:8; Mt 9:13; Mt 12:7; Mt 22:34; Lu 18:12)24Ihr wollt die Menschen führen und seid selbst blind. Die winzigste Mücke fischt ihr aus dem Becher, aber Kamele schluckt ihr unbesehen hinunter. (Mt 15:14)25Weh euch Gesetzeslehrern und Pharisäern! Ihr Scheinheiligen! Ihr reinigt sogar noch das Äußere von Becher und Schüssel.[6] Aber was darin ist, habt ihr euch in eurer Gier zusammengestohlen. (Mr 7:4)26Ihr blinden Pharisäer! Sorgt zuerst dafür, dass es mit dem Inhalt des Bechers seine Richtigkeit hat, dann wird auch sein Äußeres rein. (Joh 9:40)27Weh euch Gesetzeslehrern und Pharisäern! Ihr Scheinheiligen! Ihr seid wie weiß angestrichene Gräber, die äußerlich schön aussehen; aber drinnen sind Totengebeine und alles mögliche Ungeziefer, das unrein macht.28So seid ihr: Von außen hält man euch für fromm, innerlich aber steckt ihr voller Heuchelei und Ungehorsam gegen Gott. (Lu 16:15)29Weh euch Gesetzeslehrern und Pharisäern! Ihr Scheinheiligen! Ihr baut den Propheten wunderschöne Grabmäler und schmückt die Gräber der Gerechten.30Und ihr sagt: ›Hätten wir zur Zeit unserer Vorfahren gelebt, wir hätten uns nicht daran beteiligt, die Propheten umzubringen!‹ (Mt 5:12)31Damit gebt ihr selbst zu, dass ihr von Prophetenmördern abstammt.32Macht nur das Maß eurer Väter voll!33Ihr Nattern, ihr Schlangenbrut! Wie wollt ihr der Höllenstrafe entgehen?« (Mt 3:7)
Die Strafe wird kommen
34»Hört gut zu! Ich werde euch Propheten,[7] weise Männer und echte Gesetzeslehrer schicken. Ihr werdet einige von ihnen töten, andere ans Kreuz bringen, wieder andere in euren Synagogen auspeitschen und von Stadt zu Stadt verfolgen. (Mt 13:52; Lu 11:49; 1Th 2:15)35So stellt ihr euch in eine Reihe mit euren Vorfahren und werdet zur Rechenschaft gezogen werden für die Ermordung aller Gerechten, von Abel an bis hin zu Secharja, dem Sohn von Berechja, den ihr zwischen Tempelhaus und Brandopferaltar umgebracht habt.[8] (Ge 4:8; 2Ch 24:21)36Ich versichere euch: Diese Generation wird die Strafe für alle diese Schandtaten bekommen.«
Klage über Jerusalem
37»Jerusalem, Jerusalem, du tötest die Propheten und steinigst die Boten, die Gott zu dir schickt. Wie oft wollte ich deine Bewohner um mich scharen, wie eine Henne ihre Küken unter die Flügel nimmt! Aber ihr habt nicht gewollt. (Mt 5:12; Mt 22:6; Lu 13:34)38Deshalb wird Gott euren Tempel verlassen, und er wird verwüstet daliegen. (1Ki 9:7; Eze 10:18)39Ich sage euch, ihr werdet mich erst wiedersehen, wenn ihr rufen werdet: ›Heil dem, der im Auftrag des Herrn kommt!‹« (Ps 118:26)
