1The whole community of Israel started out from the Desert of Sin. They travelled from place to place, just as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim. But there wasn’t any water for the people to drink.2So they argued with Moses. They said, ‘Give us water to drink.’ Moses replied, ‘Why are you arguing with me? Why are you testing the LORD?’3But the people were thirsty for water there. So they told Moses they weren’t happy with him. They said, ‘Why did you bring us up out of Egypt? Did you want us, our children and our livestock to die of thirst?’4Then Moses cried out to the LORD. He said, ‘What am I going to do with these people? They are almost ready to kill me by throwing stones at me.’5The LORD answered Moses. ‘Go out in front of the people. Take some of the elders of Israel along with you. Take in your hand the walking stick you used when you struck the River Nile. Go.6I will stand there in front of you by the rock at Mount Horeb. Hit the rock. Then water will come out of it for the people to drink.’ So Moses hit the rock while the elders of Israel watched.7Moses called the place Massah and Meribah. That’s because the people of Israel argued with him there. They also tested the LORD. They asked, ‘Is the LORD among us or not?’
Joshua wins the battle over the Amalekites
8The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.9Moses said to Joshua, ‘Choose some of our men. Then go out and fight against the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill. I’ll stand there holding the walking stick God gave me.’10So Joshua fought against the Amalekites, just as Moses had ordered. Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill.11As long as Moses held up his hand, the Israelites were winning. But every time he lowered his hands, the Amalekites began to win.12When Moses’ arms got tired, Aaron and Hur got a stone and put it under him. Then he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held up his hands. Aaron was on one side, and Hur was on the other. Moses’ hands remained steady until sunset.13So Joshua destroyed the Amalekite army with swords.14Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘This is something to be remembered. So write it on a scroll. Make sure Joshua knows you have done it. I will completely erase the memory of the Amalekites from the earth.’15Then Moses built an altar. He called it The LORD Is My Banner.16He said, ‘The Amalekites opposed the authority of the LORD. So the LORD will fight against the Amalekites for all time to come.’
1Auf Befehl des HERRN zog die ganze Gemeinde Israel von der Wüste Sin aus weiter, von einem Lagerplatz zum andern. Einmal schlugen sie ihr Lager bei Refidim auf. Dort gab es kein Trinkwasser. (Nu 20:1)2Da machten die Israeliten Mose schwere Vorwürfe und forderten: »Gib uns Wasser zum Trinken!« Mose erwiderte: »Warum macht ihr mir Vorwürfe? Warum stellt ihr den HERRN auf die Probe?« (Ex 14:11)3Aber die Leute von Israel hatten großen Durst, deshalb murrten sie gegen Mose und sagten: »Wozu hast du uns eigentlich aus Ägypten herausgeführt? Nur damit wir hier verdursten, samt unseren Kindern und dem Vieh?«4Da schrie Mose zum HERRN: »Was soll ich mit diesem Volk machen? Es fehlt nicht viel und sie steinigen mich!«5Der HERR antwortete ihm: »Rufe ein paar von den Ältesten Israels zu dir und geh mit ihnen dem Volk voran. Nimm den Stock in die Hand, mit dem du ins Nilwasser geschlagen hast. (Ex 7:20)6Dort drüben auf dem Felsen, am Berg Horeb, werde ich dich erwarten. Schlag an den Felsen, dann wird Wasser herauskommen und das Volk kann trinken.« Vor den Augen der Ältesten Israels tat Mose, was der HERR ihm gesagt hatte. (Ps 78:15; Ps 105:41; Isa 43:20; 1Co 10:4; Wis 11:4)7Der Ort wurde Massa und Meriba (Ort der Probe und Anklage) genannt, weil dort die Israeliten Mose angeklagt und den HERRN auf die Probe gestellt hatten. Denn sie hatten gefragt: »Ist der HERR mitten unter uns oder nicht?« (Ps 81:8; Ps 95:8; Ps 106:32)
Erhobene Hände bringen den Sieg
8Bei Refidim geschah es auch, dass die Amalekiter anrückten, um gegen die Israeliten zu kämpfen.9Mose sagte zu Josua: »Biete die kampffähigen Männer auf! Morgen sollt ihr gegen die Amalekiter kämpfen. Ich selbst werde oben auf dem Hügel stehen und den Stock in der Hand halten, durch den Gott bisher so große Wunder getan hat.«10Josua tat, was ihm Mose befohlen hatte. Er rückte zum Kampf gegen die Amalekiter aus, nachdem Mose, Aaron und Hur zur Hügelkuppe hinaufgestiegen waren.11Solange Mose die Hand mit dem Stock emporhob, waren die Männer Israels überlegen. Ließ er sie aber sinken, so waren die Amalekiter überlegen.12Nach und nach wurden Mose die Hände schwer. Da brachten Aaron und Hur einen Stein herbei, auf dem Mose sitzen konnte. Sie selbst standen rechts und links von ihm und stützten seine Hände, bis die Sonne unterging.13So konnte Josua das Heer der Amalekiter völlig vernichten.14Darauf sagte der HERR zu Mose: »Ich werde die Amalekiter vollständig von der Erde ausrotten, sodass niemand mehr an sie denken wird. Schreib das auf, damit es niemals in Vergessenheit gerät, und präge es Josua ein!« (Nu 24:20; De 25:17; Jud 6:3; 1Sa 15:2; 1Sa 30:1; 1Ch 4:43)15Mose baute dort einen Altar und nannte ihn: »Unser Feldzeichen ist der HERR!«16Er sagte: »Schwört dem HERRN treue Gefolgschaft![1] Zwischen ihm und den Amalekitern ist Krieg für alle Zeiten.«
