1Some time after this, Jesus crossed over to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. It is also called the Sea of Tiberias.2A large crowd of people followed him. They had seen the signs he had done by healing ill people.3Then Jesus went up on a mountainside. There he sat down with his disciples.4The Jewish Passover Feast was near.5Jesus looked up and saw a large crowd coming towards him. So he said to Philip, ‘Where can we buy bread for these people to eat?’6He asked this only to test Philip. He already knew what he was going to do.7Philip answered him, ‘Suppose we were able to buy enough bread for each person to have just a bite. That would take more than half a year’s pay!’8Another of his disciples spoke up. It was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He said,9‘Here is a boy with five small loaves of barley bread. He also has two small fish. But how far will that go in such a large crowd?’10Jesus said, ‘Have the people sit down.’ There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down. About 5,000 men were there.11Then Jesus took the loaves and gave thanks. He handed out the bread to those who were seated. He gave them as much as they wanted. And he did the same with the fish.12When all of them had enough to eat, Jesus spoke to his disciples. ‘Gather the leftover pieces,’ he said. ‘Don’t waste anything.’13So they gathered what was left over from the five barley loaves. They filled 12 baskets with the pieces left by those who had eaten.14The people saw the sign that Jesus did. Then they began to say, ‘This must be the Prophet who is supposed to come into the world.’15But Jesus knew that they planned to come and force him to be their king. So he went away again to a mountain by himself.
Jesus walks on the water
16When evening came, Jesus’ disciples went down to the Sea of Galilee.17There they got into a boat and headed across the lake towards Capernaum. By now it was dark. Jesus had not yet joined them.18A strong wind was blowing, and the water became rough.19They rowed about 3 or 4 miles. Then they saw Jesus coming towards the boat. He was walking on the water. They were frightened.20But he said to them, ‘It is I. Don’t be afraid.’21Then they agreed to take him into the boat. Right away the boat reached the shore where they were heading.22The next day the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the lake realised something. They saw that only one boat had been there. They knew that Jesus had not got into it with his disciples. And they knew that the disciples had gone away alone.23Then some boats arrived from Tiberias. It was near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord gave thanks.24The crowd realised that Jesus and his disciples were not there. So they got into boats and went to Capernaum to look for Jesus.
Jesus is the bread of life
25They found him on the other side of the lake. They asked him, ‘Rabbi, when did you get here?’26Jesus answered, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. You are not looking for me because you saw the signs I did. You are looking for me because you ate the loaves until you were full.27Do not work for food that spoils. Work for food that lasts for ever. That is the food the Son of Man will give you. For God the Father has put his seal of approval on him.’28Then they asked him, ‘What does God want from us? What works does he want us to do?’29Jesus answered, ‘God’s work is to believe in the one he has sent.’30So they asked him, ‘What sign will you give us? What will you do so we can see it and believe you?31Long ago our people ate the manna in the desert. It is written in Scripture, “The Lord gave them bread from heaven to eat.” ’ (Ex 16:4; Ne 9:15; Ps 78:24; Ps 78:25)32Jesus said to them, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. It is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven. It is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.33The bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven. He gives life to the world.’34‘Sir’, they said, ‘always give us this bread.’35Then Jesus said, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry. And whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.36But it is just as I told you. You have seen me, and you still do not believe.37Everyone the Father gives me will come to me. I will never send away anyone who comes to me.38I have not come down from heaven to do what I want to do. I have come to do what the one who sent me wants me to do.39The one who sent me doesn’t want me to lose anyone he has given me. He wants me to raise them up on the last day.40My Father wants all who look to the Son and believe in him to have eternal life. I will raise them up on the last day.’41Then the Jews there began to complain about Jesus. That was because he said, ‘I am the bread that came down from heaven.’42They said, ‘Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph? Don’t we know his father and mother? How can he now say, “I came down from heaven”?’43‘Stop complaining among yourselves,’ Jesus answered.44‘No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me brings them. Then I will raise them up on the last day.45It is written in the Prophets, “God will teach all of them.” Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. (Isa 54:13)46No one has seen the Father except the one who has come from God. Only he has seen the Father.47What I’m about to tell you is true. Everyone who believes has life for ever.48I am the bread of life.49Long ago your people ate the manna in the desert, and they still died.50But here is the bread that comes down from heaven. A person can eat it and not die.51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Everyone who eats some of this bread will live for ever. This bread is my body. I will give it for the life of the world.’52Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves. They said, ‘How can this man give us his body to eat?’53Jesus said to them, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. You must eat the Son of Man’s body and drink his blood. If you don’t, you have no life in you.54Anyone who eats my body and drinks my blood has eternal life. I will raise them up on the last day.55My body is real food. My blood is real drink.56Anyone who eats my body and drinks my blood remains in me. And I remain in them.57The living Father sent me, and I live because of him. In the same way, those who feed on me will live because of me.58This is the bread that came down from heaven. Long ago your people ate manna and died. But whoever eats this bread will live for ever.’59He said this while he was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
Many disciples leave Jesus
60Jesus’ disciples heard this. Many of them said, ‘This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?’61Jesus was aware that his disciples were complaining about his teaching. So he said to them, ‘Does this upset you?62Then what if you see the Son of Man go up to where he was before?63The Holy Spirit gives life. The body means nothing at all. The words I have spoken to you are full of the Spirit. They give life.64But there are some of you who do not believe.’ Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe. And he had known who was going to hand him over to his enemies.65So he continued speaking. He said, ‘This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father helps them.’66From this time on, many of his disciples turned back. They no longer followed him.67‘You don’t want to leave also, do you?’ Jesus asked the 12 disciples.68Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, who can we go to? You have the words of eternal life.69We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.’70Then Jesus replied, ‘Didn’t I choose you, the 12 disciples? But one of you is a devil!’71He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. Judas was one of the 12 disciples. But later he was going to hand Jesus over to his enemies.

Er wandte sich an Philippus: »Wo können wir Brot kaufen, damit alle diese Leute zu essen bekommen?«6Das sagte er, um Philippus auf die Probe zu stellen; er selbst wusste schon, was er tun würde.7Philippus antwortete: »Zweihundert Silberstücke wären nicht genug, um so viel zu kaufen, dass jeder auch nur einen Brocken abbekommt.«8Andreas, ein anderer Jünger, der Bruder von Simon Petrus, sagte: (Mr 1:16; Mr 13:3; Joh 1:40; Joh 12:22)9»Hier ist ein Junge, der hat fünf Gerstenbrote und zwei Fische. Aber was ist das schon bei so einer Menschenmenge?«10»Sorgt dafür, dass die Leute sich setzen«, sagte Jesus. Es gab viel Gras an dem Ort. Sie setzten sich; ungefähr fünftausend Männer waren da.11Jesus nahm die Brote, sprach darüber das Dankgebet und verteilte sie an die Menge. Mit den Fischen tat er dasselbe, und alle hatten reichlich zu essen. (Joh 21:9; Joh 21:13)12Als sie satt waren, sagte er zu seinen Jüngern: »Sammelt die Brotreste auf, damit nichts verdirbt.«13Sie taten es und füllten zwölf Körbe mit den Resten. So viel war von den fünf Gerstenbroten übrig geblieben.14Als die Leute das Wunder sahen, das Jesus vollbracht hatte, sagten sie: »Das ist wirklich der Prophet, der in die Welt kommen soll!« (De 18:15; De 18:18; Lu 7:16; Joh 1:21; Joh 4:19; Joh 7:40; Joh 9:17)15Jesus merkte, dass sie drauf und dran waren, ihn mit Gewalt zu ihrem König zu machen. Deshalb zog er sich wieder auf den Berg zurück, ganz für sich allein. (Joh 5:13)
Jesus geht über das Wasser
16Als es Abend geworden war, gingen seine Jünger zum See hinunter. (Mt 14:22; Mr 6:45)17Sie stiegen in ein Boot, um über den See nach Kafarnaum zurückzufahren. Es wurde Nacht und Jesus war immer noch nicht zu ihnen gekommen.18Das Wetter war sehr stürmisch und das Wasser schlug hohe Wellen.19Die Jünger hatten eine Strecke von etwa fünf Kilometern[2] zurückgelegt, da sahen sie plötzlich Jesus, wie er über das Wasser ging und sich ihrem Boot näherte. Die Angst packte sie.20Aber Jesus sagte: »Habt keine Angst, ich bin’s!«[3]21Sie wollten ihn zu sich ins Boot nehmen. Aber da waren sie auch schon am Ufer, dort, wo sie hinwollten.
Jesus ist das Brot, das Leben gibt
22Die Volksmenge, die am anderen Ufer geblieben war, erinnerte sich am nächsten Tag, dass nur ein einziges Boot am Ufer gelegen hatte. Die Leute wussten, dass Jesus nicht ins Boot gestiegen war und seine Jünger ohne ihn abgefahren waren.23Es legten aber andere Boote, die von Tiberias kamen, nahe bei dem Ort an, wo der Herr das Dankgebet gesprochen und die Menge das Brot gegessen hatte. (Joh 6:11)24Als die Leute nun sahen, dass Jesus nicht mehr da war und seine Jünger auch nicht, stiegen sie in diese Boote. Sie fuhren nach Kafarnaum und wollten Jesus dort suchen.25Sie fanden ihn tatsächlich auf der anderen Seite des Sees und fragten ihn: »Rabbi, wann bist du hierhergekommen?«26Jesus antwortete: »Amen, ich versichere euch: Ihr sucht mich nicht, weil ihr meine Wunder als Zeichen verstanden habt, sondern weil ihr von dem Brot gegessen habt und satt geworden seid. (Joh 2:11)27Bemüht euch nicht um vergängliche Nahrung, sondern um wirkliche Nahrung, die für das ewige Leben vorhält. Diese Nahrung wird euch der Menschensohn geben, denn ihn hat Gott, der Vater, als seinen Gesandten bestätigt.«28Da fragten sie ihn: »Was müssen wir denn tun, um Gottes Willen zu erfüllen?«29Jesus antwortete: »Gott verlangt nur eins von euch: Ihr sollt den anerkennen,[4] den er gesandt hat.«30Sie erwiderten: »Gib uns einen Beweis für deine Bevollmächtigung! Lass uns ein eindeutiges Wunderzeichen sehen, damit wir dir glauben. (Mt 12:38; Mr 8:11; Mr 13:22; Joh 4:48; 1Co 1:22)31Unsere Vorfahren aßen das Manna in der Wüste. In den Heiligen Schriften heißt es von Mose:[5] ›Er gab ihnen Brot vom Himmel zu essen.‹« (Ps 78:24)32Jesus entgegnete: »Amen, ich versichere euch: Nicht Mose hat euch das Brot vom Himmel gegeben, sondern mein Vater gibt euch das wahre Brot vom Himmel.33Das wahre Brot Gottes ist das, das vom Himmel herabsteigt und der Welt das Leben gibt.«34»Herr«, sagten sie, »gib uns immer von diesem Brot!« (Joh 4:15)35»Ich bin das Brot, das Leben schenkt«,[6] sagte Jesus zu ihnen. »Wer zu mir kommt, wird nie mehr hungrig sein. Wer sich an mich hält,[7] wird keinen Durst mehr haben. (Joh 4:13; Joh 6:48; Joh 7:37)36Aber ich habe es euch bereits gesagt: Obwohl ihr meine Taten gesehen habt, schenkt ihr mir keinen Glauben. (Joh 16:9; Joh 20:29)37Alle, die mein Vater mir gibt, werden zu mir kommen, und niemand, der zu mir kommt, wird von mir abgewiesen. (Joh 17:2; Joh 17:24)38Ich bin vom Himmel gekommen, nicht um zu tun, was ich will, sondern um zu tun, was der will, der mich gesandt hat. (Mr 14:36; Joh 4:34)39Und er will von mir, dass ich niemand von denen verliere, die er mir gegeben hat. Vielmehr soll ich sie alle am letzten Tag zum Leben erwecken. (Joh 10:28; Joh 17:12; Joh 18:9)40Mein Vater will, dass alle, die den Sohn sehen und sich an ihn halten,[8] ewig leben. Ich werde sie am letzten Tag vom Tod auferwecken.« (Joh 5:24)41Die Zuhörenden[9] murrten, weil er gesagt hatte: »Ich bin das Brot, das vom Himmel gekommen ist.«42Sie sagten: »Wir kennen doch seinen Vater und seine Mutter! Er ist doch Jesus, der Sohn Josefs! Wie kann er behaupten: ›Ich komme vom Himmel‹?« (Mr 6:3)43Jesus sagte zu ihnen: »Was murrt ihr?44Nur die können zu mir kommen, die der Vater, der mich gesandt hat, zu mir führt. Und ich werde alle, die zu mir kommen, am letzten Tag vom Tod auferwecken.45In den Schriften der Propheten heißt es: ›Alle werden von Gott unterwiesen sein.‹ Wer den Vater hört und von ihm lernt, kommt zu mir. (Isa 54:13)46Nicht, dass je ein Mensch den Vater gesehen hätte. Nur der Eine, der von Gott gekommen ist, hat den Vater gesehen. (Joh 1:18)47Amen, ich versichere euch: Wer sich an mich hält,[10] hat das ewige Leben.48Ich bin das Brot, das Leben schenkt. (Joh 6:35)49Eure Vorfahren aßen das Manna in der Wüste und sind trotzdem gestorben.50Hier aber ist das Brot, das vom Himmel herabkommt, damit, wer davon isst, nicht stirbt.51Ich bin das lebendige Brot, das vom Himmel gekommen ist. Wer von diesem Brot isst, wird ewig leben. Das Brot, das ich geben werde, ist mein Leib.[11] Ich gebe ihn hin, damit die Menschen zum Leben gelangen können.«52Das löste unter den Zuhörern einen heftigen Streit aus. »Wie kann dieser Mensch uns seinen Leib, sein Fleisch, zu essen geben?«, fragten sie.53Jesus sagte zu ihnen: »Amen, ich versichere euch: Ihr habt keinen Anteil am Leben, wenn ihr das Fleisch des Menschensohns nicht esst und sein Blut nicht trinkt. (Mr 14:22; 1Co 10:16)54Wer mein Fleisch isst und mein Blut trinkt, hat das ewige Leben, und ich werde ihn am letzten Tag vom Tod erwecken.55Denn mein Fleisch ist die wahre Nahrung, und mein Blut ist der wahre Trank.56Wer mein Fleisch isst und mein Blut trinkt, bleibt mit mir verbunden und ich mit ihm. (Joh 15:4)57Der Vater, von dem das Leben kommt, hat mich gesandt, und ich lebe durch ihn. Genauso wird jeder, der mich isst, durch mich leben.58Das also ist das Brot, das vom Himmel herabgekommen ist. Es ist etwas ganz anderes als das Brot, das eure Vorfahren gegessen haben. Sie sind gestorben, wer aber dieses Brot isst, wird ewig leben.«59Dies sagte Jesus in der Synagoge von Kafarnaum, so lehrte er dort die Menschen.
Worte, die zum ewigen Leben führen
60Als sie das hörten, sagten viele, die sich Jesus angeschlossen hatten: »Was er da redet, geht zu weit! So etwas kann man nicht mit anhören!«61Jesus wusste schon von sich aus, dass sie murrten, und sagte zu ihnen: »Daran nehmt ihr Anstoß?62Wartet doch, bis ihr den Menschensohn dorthin zurückkehren seht, wo er vorher war!63Gottes Geist allein macht lebendig; alle menschlichen Möglichkeiten richten nichts aus.[12] Die Worte, die ich zu euch gesprochen habe, sind von diesem Geist erfüllt und bringen das Leben. (Joh 3:5; 1Co 15:45; 2Co 3:6)64Doch einige von euch haben keinen Glauben.« Jesus kannte nämlich von Anfang an die, die ihn nicht annehmen würden, und wusste auch, wer ihn verraten würde. (Joh 13:11; Joh 16:9)65Und er fügte hinzu: »Aus diesem Grund habe ich zu euch gesagt: Nur die können zu mir kommen, die der Vater dazu fähig macht.« (Joh 6:44)66Als sie das hörten, wandten sich viele seiner Anhänger von ihm ab und wollten nicht länger mit ihm gehen.67Da fragte Jesus die Zwölf: »Und ihr, was habt ihr vor? Wollt ihr mich auch verlassen?« (Mr 8:27)68Simon Petrus antwortete ihm: »Herr, zu wem sonst sollten wir gehen? Deine Worte bringen das ewige Leben.69Wir glauben und wissen, dass du der bist, in dem Gott uns begegnet.«[13] (Mr 1:24)70Jesus antwortete ihm: »Euch zwölf habe ich doch selber ausgewählt. Trotzdem ist einer von euch ein Teufel!«71Er meinte Judas, den Sohn von Simon Iskariot. Judas war es, der Jesus später verriet – einer aus dem Kreis der Zwölf. (Joh 12:4)

Una immensa folla lo seguiva ovunque per vederlo guarire i malati. Gesù salì sulla montagna e si sedette, attorniato dai discepoli. Ben presto sʼaccorse che moltissime persone stavano salendo da lui. Rivolgendosi a Filippo, gli chiese: «Filippo, dove possiamo comprare del pane per sfamare tutta questa gente?»6(Gesù intendeva soltanto mettere alla prova Filippo, perché sapeva già che cosa avrebbe fatto).7Filippo rispose: «Ci vorrebbe un capitale soltanto per cominciare!»8-9Allora Andrea, fratello di Simon Pietro intervenne: «Cʼè qui un ragazzo con cinque pani dʼorzo e due pesci. Ma a che servono con tutta questa gente?»10«Dite a tutti di sedersi», ordinò Gesù. E tutta la gente si sedette sullʼerba. (Cʼerano circa cinquemila persone).11Allora Gesù prese i pani, ringraziò Dio, poi cominciò a distribuirli alla folla. Lo stesso fece con i pesci. E tutti mangiarono a sazietà!12«Ora raccogliete gli avanzi», ordinò Gesù ai discepoli, «che niente vada sprecato!»13Così con gli avanzi riempirono dodici cesti.14La gente, rendendosi conto del grande miracolo, cominciò ad esclamare: «È proprio lui il profeta che stavamo aspettando!»15Ma quando Gesù sʼaccorse che erano pronti a prenderlo con la forza per farlo loro re, si allontanò da solo e salì più in alto, sui monti.16Quella sera, i discepoli scesero sulla spiaggia ad aspettarlo.17Ma, poiché la notte era già calata e Gesù non si vedeva ancora, salirono sulla barca e si diressero, attraverso il lago, in direzione di Cafarnao.18-19Ben presto si levò un gran vento e il lago era molto agitato. Avevano già remato per quattro o cinque chilometri quando, improvvisamente, videro Gesù che camminava sullʼacqua e si dirigeva verso la barca. I discepoli rimasero agghiacciati dal terrore,20ma Gesù li rassicurò: «Sono io, non abbiate paura!»21Allora lo fecero salire, e subito la barca si trovò a destinazione.22-23Il mattino seguente, la gente rimasta sullʼaltra riva del lago, cominciò a riunirsi sulla spiaggia (in attesa di vedere Gesù). Sapevano infatti che Gesù era giunto là insieme con i discepoli, ma poi i discepoli se nʼerano andati via da soli, lasciandolo a terra. Giunsero anche diversi battelli da Tiberiade, vicino al posto dove Gesù aveva moltiplicato il pane con un miracolo.24Così, quando tutte quelle persone videro che Gesù non cʼera, e neppure i suoi discepoli, salirono sulle barche e si diressero verso Cafarnao alla sua ricerca.25Giunti sullʼaltra sponda, lo trovarono e gli dissero: «Signore, quandʼè che sei venuto qui?»26Gesù rispose: «La verità è che voi mi cercate, perché vi ho sfamato, non perché credete in me.27Ma non dovete darvi tanto da fare per le cose che si guastano, come il cibo. Datevi da fare invece per cercare la vita eterna, che vi darò io, il Messia. Perché Dio Padre mi ha mandato proprio per questo scopo».28Allora gli chiesero: «Che cosa dobbiamo fare per piacere a Dio?»29Gesù disse loro: «Una sola cosa vuole Dio da voi: che crediate in colui che ha mandato».30-31Dissero ancora: «Se vuoi che crediamo che tu sei il Messia, devi mostrarci altri miracoli. Che cosa puoi fare tu? I nostri antenati, per esempio, hanno mangiato la manna, mentre erano nel deserto! Quello sì che fu un grande miracolo! Infatti le Scritture dicono: “Mosè diede loro il pane mandato dal cielo”».32Gesù precisò: «Non fu Mosè a dare il pane venuto dal cielo, ma mio Padre, lo stesso che ora vi offre il vero pane del cielo.33Il vero pane è una persona, colui che Dio ha mandato dal cielo per dare la vita al mondo».34«Signore», gli dissero allora, «dacci di questo pane!»35Gesù replicò: «Io sono il pane della vita. Chi viene a me, non avrà più fame. Chi crede in me, non avrà più sete.36Ma, come vi ho detto prima, il guaio vostro è che, pur avendomi conosciuto, non avete creduto!37Ma alcuni verranno da me, quelli che il Padre mi ha dato, ed io non li respingerò mai.38Infatti, sono venuto qui dal cielo per fare la volontà di Dio che mi ha mandato, non per seguire la mia strada.39E questa è la volontà di Dio Padre: che di tutti quelli che egli mi ha dato non ne perda neppure uno, ma che li risusciti nellʼultimo giorno.40Questa è la volontà di mio Padre: che chi conosce il Figlio e crede in lui abbia vita eterna. Ed io lo risusciterò nellʼultimo giorno».41Allora i Giudei cominciarono a borbottare: ce lʼavevano con Gesù, perché diceva di essere il pane mandato dal cielo.42E osservavano: «Ma costui non è quel Gesù, figlio di Giuseppe? Conosciamo bene suo padre e sua madre…»43Ma Gesù replicò: «Non brontolate fra voi per ciò che ho detto.44Nessuno può venire da me, se non lo attira il Padre che mi ha mandato. Ed io lo risusciterò nellʼultimo giorno.45Proprio come si legge nelle Scritture: “Saranno tutti istruiti da Dio”. Perciò, chi ascolta il Padre e da lui ha imparato la verità, viene a me con fede.46Questo però non significa che qualcuno abbia visto il Padre, perché soltanto io, il Figlio che viene da Dio, lʼho visto!47Questo vi assicuro: chi crede in me ha già vita eterna!48-51Proprio così, io sono il pane della vita. Quando i vostri antenati mangiarono la manna del deserto, morirono lo stesso tutti. Invece questo pane, mandato dal cielo, dà la vita eterna a chi lo mangia. Io sono questo pane vivo, venuto dal cielo. Chi mangia questo pane vivrà per sempre. Questo pane è il mio corpo, dato perché il mondo abbia la vita».52Allora i Giudei cominciarono a discutere tra loro sul significato di quelle parole. «Come può questʼuomo darci da mangiare il suo corpo?» si chiedevano.53Allora Gesù ripeté: «In tutta sincerità vi dico questo: se non mangerete il corpo del Cristo e non berrete il suo sangue, non avrete la vita eterna.54Chi invece mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue, ha vita eterna; ed io lo risusciterò nellʼultimo giorno.55Perché la mia carne è il vero cibo e il mio sangue la vera bevanda.56Chi mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue resta unito a me, ed io a lui.57Io vivo per la potenza del Padre vivente, che mi ha mandato; allo stesso modo chi mangia me, vivrà grazie a me.58Io sono il vero pane venuto dal cielo, chi mangia questo pane, vivrà per sempre, non come i vostri antenati che mangiarono la manna, il pane del cielo, e poi morirono».59Gesù disse queste cose nella sinagoga di Cafarnao.60Perfino i discepoli commentarono: «Come parla difficile questa volta! Chi può mai capire il significato di queste cose?»61Gesù, naturalmente, sapeva che i discepoli si lamentavano, perciò disse loro: «Che cʼè di strano in quello che dico?62Che direte, allora, quando vedrete me, il Messia, ritornare in cielo?63Soltanto lo Spirito Santo dà la vita. Lʼuomo da solo non può far niente. Fate invece attenzione alle mie parole, perché vengono dallo Spirito di Dio e danno la vita.64Ma alcuni di voi non mi credono». (Infatti Gesù sapeva fin da principio chi erano quelli che non credevano e chi lʼavrebbe tradito).65Poi aggiunse: «Questo intendevo, quando dissi che nessuno può venire da me, se il Padre non glielo permette».66A questo punto molti dei discepoli non ne vollero più sapere di lui.67Gesù si rivolse ai dodici e chiese: «Ve ne andate anche voi?»68Allora Simon Pietro rispose: «Maestro, da chi ce ne andremo? Solo tu cʼinsegni come avere la vita eterna.69Noi ti abbiamo creduto e sappiamo che tu sei il Santo Figlio di Dio».70Gesù rispose: «Non sono, forse, stato io ad eleggere voi dodici? Eppure uno di voi è un diavolo!»71Parlava di Giuda, figlio di Simone Iscariota, uno dei dodici, quello che poi lo avrebbe tradito.
