1Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish feasts.2In Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate is a pool. In the Aramaic language it is called Bethesda. It is surrounded by five rows of columns with a roof over them.3-4Here a great number of disabled people used to lie down. Among them were those who were blind, those who could not walk, and those who could hardly move.5One person was there who had not been able to walk for 38 years.6Jesus saw him lying there. He knew that the man had been in that condition for a long time. So he asked him, ‘Do you want to get well?’7‘Sir’, the disabled man replied, ‘I have no one to help me into the pool when an angel stirs up the water. I try to get in, but someone else always goes down ahead of me.’8Then Jesus said to him, ‘Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.’9The man was healed right away. He picked up his mat and walked. This happened on a Sabbath day.10So the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, ‘It is the Sabbath day. The law does not allow you to carry your mat.’11But he replied, ‘The one who made me well said to me, “Pick up your mat and walk.” ’12They asked him, ‘Who is this fellow? Who told you to pick it up and walk?’13The one who was healed had no idea who it was. Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.14Later Jesus found him at the temple. Jesus said to him, ‘See, you are well again. Stop sinning, or something worse may happen to you.’15The man went away. He told the Jewish leaders it was Jesus who had made him well.
The authority of the Son
16Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath day. So the Jewish leaders began to oppose him.17Jesus defended himself. He said to them, ‘My Father is always doing his work. He is working right up to this day. I am working too.’18For this reason the Jewish leaders tried even harder to kill him. According to them, Jesus was not only breaking the law of the Sabbath day. He was even calling God his own Father. He was making himself equal with God.19Jesus answered, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. The Son can do nothing by himself. He can do only what he sees his Father doing. What the Father does, the Son also does.20This is because the Father loves the Son. The Father shows him everything he does. Yes, and the Father will show the Son even greater works than these. And you will be amazed.21The Father raises the dead and gives them life. In the same way, the Son gives life to anyone he wants to.22Also, the Father does not judge anyone. He has given the Son the task of judging.23Then all people will honour the Son just as they honour the Father. Whoever does not honour the Son does not honour the Father, who sent him.24‘What I’m about to tell you is true. Anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. They will not be judged. They have crossed over from death to life.25What I’m about to tell you is true. A time is coming for me to give life. In fact, it has already begun. The dead will hear the voice of the Son of God. Those who hear it will live.26The Father has life in himself. He has allowed the Son also to have life in himself.27And the Father has given him the authority to judge. This is because he is the Son of Man.28‘Do not be amazed at this. A time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice.29They will all come out of their graves. People who have done what is good will rise and live again. People who have done what is evil will rise and be found guilty.30I can do nothing by myself. I judge only as I hear. And my judging is fair. I do not try to please myself. I try to please the one who sent me.
Being a witness about Jesus
31‘If I am a witness about myself, what I say is not true.32There is someone else who is a witness in my favour. And I know that what he says about me is true.33‘You have sent people to John the Baptist. He has been a witness to the truth.34I do not accept what a person says. I only talk about what John says so that you can be saved.35John was like a lamp that burned and gave light. For a while you chose to enjoy his light.36‘What I say about myself is more important than what John says about me. I am doing the works the Father gave me to finish. These works are a witness that the Father has sent me.37The Father who sent me is himself a witness about me. You have never heard his voice. You have never seen what he really looks like.38And his word does not live in you. That’s because you do not believe the one he sent.39You study the Scriptures carefully. You study them because you think they will give you eternal life. The Scriptures you study are a witness about me.40But you refuse to come to me and receive life.41‘I do not accept praise from human beings.42But I know you. I know that you do not have love for God in your hearts.43I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me. But if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.44You accept praise from one another. But you do not seek the praise that comes from the only God. So how can you believe?45‘Do not think I will bring charges against you in front of the Father. Moses is the one who does that. And he is the one you build your hopes on.46Do you believe Moses? Then you should believe me. He wrote about me.47But you do not believe what he wrote. So how are you going to believe what I say?’

Er erkannte, dass der Mann schon lange unter seiner Krankheit litt, und fragte ihn: »Willst du gesund werden?«7Der Kranke antwortete: »Herr, ich habe keinen, der mir in den Teich hilft, wenn das Wasser sich bewegt. Wenn ich es allein versuche, ist immer schon jemand vor mir da.«8Jesus sagte zu ihm: »Steh auf, nimm deine Matte und geh!« (Mr 2:10)9Im selben Augenblick wurde der Mann gesund. Er nahm seine Matte und konnte wieder gehen. Der Tag, an dem dies geschah, war ein Sabbat. (Mr 2:27; Joh 5:16; Joh 5:18; Joh 7:21; Joh 9:14)10Einige von den führenden Männern[2] sagten deshalb zu dem Geheilten: »Heute ist Sabbat, da darfst du deine Matte nicht tragen!« (Ex 20:8; Jer 17:21)11Er antwortete: »Der Mann, der mich geheilt hat, sagte zu mir: ›Nimm deine Matte und geh!‹«12Da fragten sie ihn: »Wer ist es, der dir so etwas befohlen hat?«13Aber er konnte keine Auskunft darüber geben; denn Jesus hatte den Ort wegen der vielen Menschen schon wieder verlassen. (Mt 8:18; Mt 13:36; Joh 6:15; Joh 11:54; Joh 12:36)14Später traf Jesus ihn im Tempel und sagte: »Hör zu! Du bist jetzt gesund. Tu nichts Unrechtes mehr, sonst wird es dir noch schlimmer ergehen.« (Mt 12:45; Joh 8:11; Jas 5:16)15Der Geheilte ging fort und berichtete den führenden Männern, dass es Jesus war, der ihn gesund gemacht hatte.16Da begannen sie, Jesus zu verfolgen, weil er an einem Sabbat geheilt hatte.17Jesus aber sagte zu ihnen: »Mein Vater ist ständig am Werk und deshalb bin ich es auch.«18Daraufhin waren sie noch fester entschlossen, ihn zu töten. Denn Jesus setzte nicht nur die Sabbatvorschriften außer Kraft, er behauptete sogar, dass Gott sein Vater[3] sei, und stellte sich so mit Gott auf eine Stufe. (Joh 7:1)
Die Vollmacht des Sohnes
19Jesus erwiderte auf ihre Vorwürfe: »Amen, ich versichere euch: Der Sohn kann nichts von sich aus tun; er kann nur tun, was er den Vater tun sieht. Was der Vater tut, genau das tut auch der Sohn. (Joh 1:34)20Der Vater liebt den Sohn und zeigt ihm alles, was er selber tut. Er wird ihm noch größere Taten zeigen, sodass ihr staunen werdet. (Joh 3:35)21Denn wie der Vater die Toten auferweckt und ihnen das Leben gibt, so gibt auch der Sohn das Leben, wem er will. (Joh 11:25)22Auch seine ganze richterliche Macht hat der Vater dem Sohn übergeben; er selbst spricht über niemand das Urteil. (Joh 3:18; Joh 5:27; Joh 5:30; Joh 9:39; Joh 12:47; Ac 10:42; 1Jo 2:28; Jud 1:14)23Denn alle sollen den Sohn ebenso ehren wie den Vater. Wer den Sohn nicht ehrt, ehrt auch den Vater nicht, der ihn gesandt hat. (Php 2:10)24Amen, ich versichere euch: Alle, die auf mein Wort hören und dem glauben, der mich gesandt hat, haben das ewige Leben. Sie kommen nicht mehr vor Gottes Gericht; sie haben den Tod schon hinter sich gelassen und das unvergängliche Leben erreicht. (Joh 3:16; Joh 8:51; Joh 10:28; Joh 11:25; Joh 14:6; Joh 17:2; Joh 20:31; 1Jo 2:25; 1Jo 3:14; 1Jo 5:11)25Amen, ich versichere euch: Die Stunde kommt – ja, sie ist schon da –, dass die Toten die Stimme des Gottessohnes hören werden, und wer sie hört, wird leben.26Wie der Vater der Geber des Lebens ist, so hat er auch dem Sohn Macht verliehen, Leben zu geben. (Joh 1:4)27Und er hat dem Sohn die Macht verliehen, Gericht zu halten, weil er der Menschensohn ist.28Wundert euch nicht darüber! Die Stunde kommt, da werden alle Toten in den Gräbern seine Stimme hören29und ihre Gräber verlassen. Alle, die Gutes getan haben, werden auferstehen, um das Leben zu empfangen, und die Böses getan haben, um verurteilt zu werden.30Ich kann nichts von mir aus tun, sondern entscheide als Richter so, wie ich den Vater entscheiden höre. Meine Entscheidung ist gerecht, denn ich setze nicht meinen eigenen Willen durch, sondern den Willen dessen, der mich gesandt hat.« (Joh 4:34)
Zeugen für Jesus
31»Wenn ich für mich selbst als Zeuge auftreten wollte, hätte meine Aussage keine Beweiskraft.32Es gibt einen anderen Zeugen, der für mich aussagt, und ich weiß, dass er die Wahrheit über mich sagt.33Ich meine damit nicht Johannes.[4] Ihr habt Boten zu ihm geschickt und er ist als Zeuge für die Wahrheit eingetreten.34Ich brauche aber keinen Menschen als Zeugen; auf Johannes verweise ich nur, weil ich möchte, dass ihr gerettet werdet.35Johannes war wie eine brennende Lampe, ihr aber wolltet nichts weiter, als eine Zeit lang an seinem Licht eure Freude haben.36Ich habe ein Zeugnis auf meiner Seite, das die Aussage von Johannes weit übertrifft: die Taten meines Vaters, die ich in seinem Auftrag vollenden soll. Sie sprechen für mich und bestätigen, dass mein Vater mich gesandt hat. (Joh 4:34; Joh 10:25; Joh 10:38; Joh 14:10; Joh 15:24)37Der Vater selbst, der mich gesandt hat, hat mit diesen Taten für mich ausgesagt. Ihr habt seine Stimme niemals gehört und seine Gestalt nie gesehen. (Ex 20:19; De 4:12)38Auch sein Wort in den Heiligen Schriften nützt euch nichts mehr – weil ihr dem, den er gesandt hat, keinen Glauben schenkt. (Joh 16:9)39Ihr forscht doch in den Heiligen Schriften und seid überzeugt, in ihnen das ewige Leben zu finden – und gerade sie weisen auf mich hin. (Lu 24:27; Lu 24:44; 2Ti 3:15; 1Pe 1:10)40Aber ihr seid nicht bereit, zu mir zu kommen und so das ewige Leben zu haben.41Ich bin nicht darauf aus, von Menschen geehrt zu werden. (Joh 7:18)42Außerdem kenne ich euch; ich weiß, dass in euren Herzen keine Liebe zu Gott ist.43Ich bin im Auftrag meines Vaters gekommen, doch ihr weist mich ab. Wenn aber jemand in seinem eigenen Auftrag kommt, werdet ihr ihn aufnehmen.44Wie könntet ihr denn auch zum Glauben an mich kommen? Ihr legt ja nur Wert darauf, einer vom andern bestätigt zu werden. Aber die Anerkennung bei Gott, dem Einen, zu dem ihr euch bekennt,[5] die sucht ihr nicht. (Joh 12:43)45Ihr braucht aber nicht zu denken, dass ich euch bei meinem Vater verklagen werde. Mose klagt euch an, derselbe Mose, auf dessen Fürsprache ihr hofft.46Wenn ihr Mose wirklich glaubtet, dann würdet ihr auch mir glauben; denn er hat über mich geschrieben. (De 18:15; De 18:18; Lu 24:27; Lu 24:44; Ac 3:22; Ac 7:37)47Da ihr aber seinen geschriebenen Worten nicht glaubt, wie könnt ihr dann meinen gesprochenen glauben?« (Lu 16:31)

(Di tanto in tanto, infatti, un angelo del Signore veniva a smuovere lʼacqua; e la prima persona che vi si tuffava guariva).5Fra quelli in attesa, cʼera un uomo paralizzato da trentotto anni.6Quando Gesù lo vide, lì sdraiato, e seppe da quanto tempo era malato, gli chiese: «Non vorresti guarire?»7«Non posso», rispose lʼuomo, «perché non ho nessuno che mi aiuti a tuffarmi nella vasca, quando lʼacqua è mossa. Ogni volta che cerco di buttarmi cʼè sempre qualcun altro che arriva prima di me».8Allora Gesù gli disse: «Àlzati, prendi la tua coperta e cammina!»9-10Immediatamente lʼuomo guarì, prese la coperta e cominciò a camminare. Era sabato quando Gesù fece questo miracolo, perciò i capi giudei protestarono. Rivolgendosi allʼuomo che era stato guarito, gridarono: «Non puoi lavorare di sabato! È contro la legge portare quella coperta!»11«È stato quello che mi ha guarito a dirmi di portarla!» rispose lʼuomo.12«E chi sarebbe quello che ti ha detto una cosa del genere?» gli chiesero.13Lʼuomo non lo sapeva, perché Gesù si era allontanato tra la folla.14Ma, dopo un poʼ, Gesù lo ritrovò nel tempio e gli disse: «Ora che stai bene, non continuare a peccare come prima, che non ti accada anche di peggio!»15Allora lʼuomo andò dai capi giudei ad informarli che era stato Gesù a guarirlo.16Così essi cominciarono ad accusare Gesù (con lo scopo di farlo condannare a morte), perché guariva i malati di sabato.17Ma Gesù disse: «Mio Padre opera senza interruzione, ed io sto seguendo il suo esempio».18A queste parole i capi giudei si dettero ancora più da fare per ucciderlo, perché, oltre ad aver disubbidito alla legge sul sabato, aveva parlato di Dio come di suo Padre, considerandosi perciò uguale a lui.19Così replicò Gesù ai suoi accusatori: «Il Figlio non può fare niente da solo. Fa soltanto ciò che vede fare dal Padre, e allo stesso modo.20-21Perché il Padre ama il Figlio e gli fa vedere tutto ciò che fa. Con lʼaiuto del Padre, il Figlio farà miracoli ben più grandi della guarigione di questʼuomo, tali da farvi restare senza parole! Avrà perfino il potere di risuscitare chi vuole, proprio come il Padre.22Inoltre il Padre non giudica nessuno, perché ha dato al Figlio tutto il potere di giudicare il peccato.23Così tutti onoreranno il Figlio, proprio come onorano il Padre. Ma chi non onora il Figlio, che Dio stesso ha mandato, non onora nemmeno il Padre.24In tutta sincerità, vi dico che chi ascolta il mio messaggio e crede in Dio, che mi ha mandato, ha la vita eterna. Non sarà più condannato per i propri peccati, ma è già passato dalla morte alla vita.25Aggiungo questo: arriverà il momento, anzi è già arrivato, in cui i morti udranno la mia voce, la voce del Figlio di Dio, e chi lʼascolta, vivrà.26-27Il Padre è fonte di vita ed ha concesso anche al Figlio di essere fonte di vita; gli ha dato il potere di giudicare i peccati di tutta lʼumanità, perché è il Figlio dellʼUomo.28-29Non vi meravigliate! Si avvicina il momento in cui tutti i morti nelle loro tombe udranno la voce del Figlio di Dio; e risusciteranno: quelli che hanno agito bene, risorgeranno per avere la vita eterna, gli altri che hanno agito male, per essere condannati.30Io non posso fare nulla da solo. Non giudico senza aver prima ascoltato il consiglio di mio Padre. E il mio giudizio è onesto e imparziale, perché non cerco di fare ciò che voglio io, ma la volontà di Dio, che mi ha mandato.31Quando parlo di me stesso, non sono creduto,32-33ma cʼè qualcun altro, Giovanni Battista, che dice le stesse cose sul mio conto. Voi avete mandato la vostra gente ad interrogarlo e vi assicuro che tutto ciò che ha detto è la pura verità!34Ma la testimonianza più vera su di me non viene da un essere umano, anche se ho ricordato le parole di Giovanni, perché possiate credere in me ed essere salvati.35Giovanni era come una lampada splendente di verità, ma voi avete voluto approfittare della sua luce solo per poco tempo!36A mio favore, però, cʼè una testimonianza ben più grande di quella di Giovanni. Parlo dei miei miracoli, che il Padre mi ha concesso di fare. Sono proprio quei miracoli che vi danno la prova che il Padre mi ha mandato.37Oltre a ciò, il Padre stesso ha testimoniato per me. Certo, non vi è apparso di persona, né vi ha parlato direttamente,38ma siete voi a non volerlo ascoltare, perché vi rifiutate di credere in me, che sono mandato per portarvi il messaggio di Dio.39Voi esaminate attentamente le Scritture, perché è tramite le Scritture che credete di avere la vita eterna. E dire che sono proprio loro che parlano di me!40Eppure, non volete venire da me per avere la vita eterna!41-42A me non importa affatto avere o non avere la vostra approvazione, perché so bene che voi non amate Dio.43Lo so, perché sono venuto per farvi conoscere mio Padre e voi mi respingete, mentre sareste pronti a ricevere il primo che capita, che non fosse mandato da Dio!44Non cʼè da meravigliarsi, se non credete, perché vi compiacete della reciproca considerazione, mentre ve ne infischiate della gloria che viene dallʼunico Dio!45Tuttavia, non sarò io ad accusarvi di questo davanti al Padre. Lo farà Mosè, lo stesso Mosè, nelle cui leggi sperate tanto per entrare in cielo!46Però, se aveste creduto a Mosè, dovreste credere anche a me; infatti è stato proprio lui a scrivere sul mio conto. Invece non avete voluto credergli, di conseguenza, non credete neppure a me.47Quindi, se non credete a ciò che ha scritto lui, come potete credere alle mie parole?»
