1Hiram was king of Tyre. He sent messengers to David. He sent cedar logs along with them. He also sent skilled workers to build a palace for David. They worked with stone and wood.2David knew that the LORD had made his position as king secure. He knew that the LORD had made him king over the whole nation of Israel. He knew that the LORD had greatly honoured his kingdom. The LORD had done it because the Israelites were his people.3In Jerusalem David married more women. He also became the father of more sons and daughters.4Here is a list of the children born to him in Jerusalem. Their names were Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,5Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet,6Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia,7Elishama, Beeliada and Eliphelet.
David wins the battle over the Philistines
8The Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over the entire nation of Israel. So the whole Philistine army went to look for him. But David heard about it. He went out to where they were.9The Philistines had come and attacked the people in the Valley of Rephaim.10So David asked God for advice. David asked, ‘Should I go and attack the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?’ The LORD answered him, ‘Go. I will hand them over to you.’11So David and his men went up to Baal Perazim. There David won the battle over the Philistines. He said, ‘God has broken through against my enemies, just as water breaks through a dam.’ That’s why the place was called Baal Perazim.12The Philistines had left statues of their gods there. So David gave orders to burn them up.13Once more the Philistines attacked the people in the valley.14So David asked God for advice again. God answered him, ‘Do not go straight after them. Instead, circle around them. Attack them in front of the poplar trees.15Listen for the sound of marching in the tops of the trees. Then move out to fight. The sound will mean that I have gone out in front of you. I will strike down the Philistine army.’16So David did just as God had commanded him. He and his men struck down the Philistine army. They struck them down from Gibeon all the way to Gezer.17So David became famous in every land. The LORD made all the nations afraid of him.

Philistines Defeated
8When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard of it and went out against them.9Now the Philistines had come and made a raid in the Valley of Rephaim. (1Ch 11:15; 1Ch 14:13)10And David inquired of God, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up, and I will give them into your hand.”11And he went up to Baal-perazim, and David struck them down there. And David said, “God has broken through[1] my enemies by my hand, like a bursting flood.” Therefore the name of that place is called Baal-perazim.12And they left their gods there, and David gave command, and they were burned.13And the Philistines yet again made a raid in the valley. (1Ch 14:9)14And when David again inquired of God, God said to him, “You shall not go up after them; go around and come against them opposite the balsam trees. (1Ch 14:16)15And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then go out to battle, for God has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.”16And David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer.17And the fame of David went out into all lands, and the Lord brought the fear of him upon all nations.
