1Der HERR forderte Mose auf: »Mach dich auf den Weg! Zieh mit dem Volk, das du aus Ägypten geführt hast, von hier fort. Geht in das Land, das ich Abraham, Isaak und Jakob mit einem Schwur als Besitz für ihre Nachkommen versprochen habe.2Ich werde einen Engel vor euch[1] herschicken und die Kanaaniter, Amoriter, Hetiter, Perisiter, Hiwiter und Jebusiter vertreiben.3´Zieht also los. Ihr kommt` in ein Land, das von Milch und Honig überfließt. Aber ich werde euch nicht begleiten, denn ihr seid ein so eigensinniges Volk, dass ich euch sonst unterwegs vernichten würde.«4Als das Volk diese schlechte Nachricht vernahm, trauerten sie, und keiner von ihnen legte mehr seinen Schmuck an.5Denn der HERR hatte Mose befohlen, den Israeliten auszurichten: »Ihr seid ein eigensinniges Volk! Wäre ich auf dem Weg ´ins Land` nur einen Augenblick in eurer Mitte, dann würde ich euch vernichten! Nehmt euren Schmuck ab. Dann werde ich mir überlegen, was ich mit euch tun werde.«6Darum trennten sich die Israeliten am Berg Horeb von ihrem Schmuck.
Die Begegnung mit Gott findet außerhalb des Lagers statt
7Mose baute das Zelt, ´in dem er mit Gott redete`, jeweils in einiger Entfernung vom Lager der Israeliten auf. Er nannte es »Zelt der Begegnung«.[2] Wer den HERRN befragen wollte, musste das Lager verlassen und zum »Zelt der Begegnung« hinausgehen.8Jedes Mal, wenn Mose dorthin ging, erhoben sich die Israeliten, stellten sich vor ihren Zelten auf und blickten Mose nach, bis er im »Zelt ´der Begegnung` « verschwunden war.9Sobald er es betrat, kam die Wolkensäule herab und blieb am Zelteingang stehen, während der HERR mit Mose redete.10Wenn die Israeliten sahen, dass die Wolkensäule ihren Platz am Eingang des Begegnungszeltes eingenommen hatte, erhoben sie sich alle und warfen sich am Eingang ihrer Zelte anbetend nieder.11Der HERR redete mit Mose von Angesicht zu Angesicht[3] wie ein Mensch mit seinem Freund. Anschließend kehrte Mose wieder ins Lager zurück. Aber sein junger Diener Josua, der Sohn Nuns, blieb im Zelt der Begegnung.
Mose bittet Gott, sein Volk weiterhin zu begleiten
12Mose sagte zum HERRN: »Du hast mir befohlen, dieses Volk ´in sein Land` zu führen, aber du hast mir nicht gesagt, wen du mit mir senden wirst. Dabei hast du mir doch versichert, dass du mich als deinen Vertrauten betrachtest[4] und ich in deiner Gunst stehe.13Wenn ich wirklich deine Gunst gefunden habe, dann zeige mir, was du vorhast[5], damit ich dich besser verstehe und du auch in Zukunft an mir Gefallen finden kannst. Bedenke auch, dass es sich bei den Israeliten um dein Volk handelt.«14Der HERR antwortete: »Ich selbst komme mit euch, du kannst beruhigt sein[6].«15Mose erwiderte: »Wenn du nicht selbst mitgehst, dann führe uns gar nicht erst weg von hier.16Woran sollen die Menschen denn erkennen, dass du mir und deinem ´ganzen` Volk wohlgesinnt bist? Doch nur daran, dass du mit uns gehst! Was sonst sollte uns von allen anderen Völkern auf der Welt unterscheiden?«17Der HERR antwortete Mose: »Sei gewiss: Ich werde den Wunsch, den du geäußert hast, erfüllen. Denn du stehst in meiner Gunst und bist mein Vertrauter[7].«
Gott verspricht Mose, dass er sich ihm offenbaren wird
18Da bat Mose: »Lass mich deine Herrlichkeit sehen!«19Der HERR gab zur Antwort: »Ich werde in meiner ganzen Heiligkeit und Schönheit[8] an dir vorüberziehen und meinen Namen ›der HERR‹ vor dir ausrufen.[9] ´Ich bin derjenige`, der Gnade erweist, wem er Gnade erweisen will, und der Erbarmen zeigt, wem er Erbarmen zeigen will.«20Der HERR fügte hinzu: »Mein Gesicht darfst du nicht sehen, denn niemand, der mir ins Gesicht sieht, bleibt am Leben[10].21Stell dich hier auf diesen Felsen neben mich«, fuhr der HERR fort.22»Wenn meine Herrlichkeit an dir vorüberzieht, werde ich dich in einen Felsspalt stellen und meine Hand schützend über dich halten, bis ich vorbeigegangen bin.23Dann werde ich meine Hand wegnehmen, und du kannst mir nachschauen. Aber mein Gesicht darf niemand sehen.«

Wenn ich nur einen Augenblick in deiner Mitte hinaufzöge, so müsste ich dich vertilgen. Und nun lege deinen Schmuck von dir ab, so will ich sehen, was ich dir tun will! (Jes 22,12; Joe 2,12; Jak 4,9)6Da rissen sich die Kinder Israels ihren Schmuck ab beim Berg Horeb. (Jes 3,18; Hes 26,16)
Das Zelt der Zusammenkunft außerhalb des Lagers
7Mose aber nahm das Zelt und schlug es sich außerhalb des Lagers auf, fern von dem Lager, und er nannte es »Zelt der Zusammenkunft«.[1] Und so geschah es, dass jeder, der den HERRN suchte, zum Zelt der Zusammenkunft hinausgehen musste, das außerhalb des Lagers war. (5Mo 4,29; Lk 11,9; Hebr 13,11)8Und es geschah, wenn Mose hinausging zu dem Zelt, dann stand das ganze Volk auf, und jedermann blieb stehen am Eingang seines Zeltes und sah Mose nach, bis er in das Zelt hineingegangen war.9Und es geschah, wenn Mose in das Zelt hineinging, so kam die Wolkensäule herab und stand am Eingang des Zeltes, und Er redete mit Mose. (4Mo 12,8; Ps 99,7)10Und wenn das ganze Volk die Wolkensäule am Eingang des Zeltes stehen sah, dann standen sie alle auf und verneigten sich, jeder am Eingang seines Zeltes. Mose schaut die Herrlichkeit des Herrn
12Und Mose sprach zu dem HERRN: Siehe, du sprichst zu mir: Führe das Volk hinauf; aber du lässt mich nicht wissen, wen du mit mir senden willst; und doch hast du gesagt: Ich kenne dich mit Namen, und du hast Gnade gefunden vor meinen Augen. (2Mo 3,4; 2Mo 33,1; 2Mo 33,17; 2Mo 34,9; 2Sam 15,25; Jes 43,1; Joh 10,3; Joh 10,14; 2Tim 2,19)13Wenn ich nun Gnade gefunden habe vor deinen Augen, so lass mich doch deine Wege wissen und dich erkennen, damit ich Gnade finde vor deinen Augen; und bedenke doch, dass dieses Volk dein Volk ist! (Ps 61,3)22Wenn dann meine Herrlichkeit vorübergeht, so stelle ich dich in die Felsenkluft und will dich mit meiner Hand so lange bedecken, bis ich vorübergegangen bin. von Biblica1Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Leave this place, you and the people you brought up out of Egypt, and go up to the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, saying, “I will give it to your descendants.”2I will send an angel before you and drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.3Go up to the land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked people and I might destroy you on the way.’4When the people heard these distressing words, they began to mourn and no-one put on any ornaments.5For the Lord had said to Moses, ‘Tell the Israelites, “You are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go with you even for a moment, I might destroy you. Now take off your ornaments and I will decide what to do with you.” ’6So the Israelites stripped off their ornaments at Mount Horeb.
The tent of meeting
7Now Moses used to take a tent and pitch it outside the camp some distance away, calling it the ‘tent of meeting’. Anyone enquiring of the Lord would go to the tent of meeting outside the camp.8And whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose and stood at the entrances to their tents, watching Moses until he entered the tent.9As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the entrance, while the Lord spoke with Moses.10Whenever the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they all stood and worshipped, each at the entrance to their tent.11The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young assistant Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.
Moses and the glory of the Lord
12Moses said to the Lord, ‘You have been telling me, “Lead these people,” but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, “I know you by name and you have found favour with me.”13If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favour with you. Remember that this nation is your people.’14The Lord replied, ‘My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’15Then Moses said to him, ‘If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.16How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?’17And the Lord said to Moses, ‘I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.’18Then Moses said, ‘Now show me your glory.’19And the Lord said, ‘I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence.
