1´Vor dem Auszug aus` Ägypten sagte der HERR zu Mose und Aaron:2»Dieser Monat soll für euch ´ab jetzt` den Jahresbeginn markieren und als erster Monat des Jahres gezählt werden.3Richtet der ganzen Gemeinschaft der Israeliten aus: ›Am zehnten Tag dieses Monats soll jeder ´Familienvater` ein Lamm für seine Familie aussuchen.4Ist eine Familie zu klein, um ein ganzes Lamm zu verzehren, dann soll sie sich mit ihren Nachbarn zusammentun. Berücksichtigt dabei, wie viel jeder Einzelne essen kann, ´damit nichts übrig bleibt`.5Sucht euch ein einjähriges, männliches Lamm ohne Fehler aus. Es kann entweder ein Schaf- oder ein Ziegenböckchen sein.6Haltet es bis zum vierzehnten Tag des Monats gesondert von der übrigen Herde. An diesem Tag soll es in der Abenddämmerung geschlachtet werden. ´Diese Anordnung gilt` für alle, die zur Gemeinschaft der Israeliten gehören.7Nehmt etwas vom Blut ´des geschlachteten Lammes` und streicht es an die Pfosten und die oberen Türbalken der Häuser, in denen das Lamm gegessen wird.8Bratet das Fleisch über dem Feuer und esst es noch in derselben Nacht mit ungesäuertem Brot und bitteren Kräutern.9Verzehrt das Fleisch nicht roh oder gekocht. Das Tier muss als Ganzes über dem Feuer gebraten werden, einschließlich Kopf, Beinen und Innereien.10Lasst nichts übrig bis zum nächsten Morgen, sondern verbrennt die Reste ´vor Tagesanbruch`.11Wenn ihr das Lamm esst, sollt ihr euer Gewand mit dem Gürtel hochraffen[1], die Schuhe anziehen und den Wanderstock bereitlegen[2], ´um reisefertig zu sein`. Ihr müsst euch beim Essen beeilen! So sollt ihr das Passafest für ´mich`, den HERRN, feiern.12In dieser Nacht werde ich durch das Land Ägypten gehen und die ´männlichen` Erstgeborenen aller Menschen und Tiere töten. Ich werde über alle Götter Ägyptens Gericht halten, denn ich bin der HERR.13Das Blut an den Häusern, in denen ihr euch aufhaltet, wird ein Zeichen ´zu eurem Schutz` sein: Wenn ich das Blut sehe, werde ich an euch vorübergehen, und so wird euch das tödliche Unheil nicht treffen, mit dem ich Ägypten strafe.14Dieser Tag soll für euch ein Gedenktag sein, den ihr in allen kommenden Generationen als Fest für ´mich`, den HERRN, feiert. Das ist eine bleibende Ordnung.15Sieben Tage lang dürft ihr nur Brot aus ungesäuertem Teig essen. Entfernt gleich am ersten Tag den Sauerteig aus euren Häusern! Jeder, der während dieser sieben Tage Brot mit Sauerteig isst, soll aus Israel verstoßen werden und sterben!16Kommt am ersten und am siebten Tag zu einer heiligen Festversammlung zusammen. An diesen beiden Tagen dürft ihr keine Arbeit verrichten. Nur was ihr zum Essen braucht, könnt ihr zubereiten.17Feiert ´jedes Jahr` das Fest der ungesäuerten Brote, denn am ersten Tag dieses Festes[3] habe ich euch nach Stämmen geordnet[4] aus Ägypten herausgeführt. Durch alle kommenden Generationen sollt ihr diesen Feiertag zur bleibenden Ordnung machen.18Esst im ersten Monat ´des Jahres` vom Abend des vierzehnten Tages bis zum Abend des einundzwanzigsten Tages nur ungesäuertes Brot.19Sieben Tage lang darf man in euren Häusern keinen Sauerteig finden. Wer in dieser Zeit Gesäuertes isst, soll aus der Gemeinschaft des Volkes Israel ausgestoßen werden und sterben – egal ob er ein Fremder oder ein Einheimischer ist.20Ihr dürft also keinerlei Nahrungsmittel aus Sauerteig zu euch nehmen. Wo ihr auch wohnt, sollt ihr nur ungesäuertes Brot essen!‹«21Mose rief alle führenden Männer der Israeliten zusammen und befahl ihnen: »Geht und holt die Schafe und Ziegen[5] für eure Familien und schlachtet sie als Passaopfer!22Fangt das Blut in einer Schale auf, taucht ein Bündel Ysop hinein und bestreicht mit dem Blut die beiden Pfosten und den oberen Balken eurer Tür. Aber gebt Acht – danach darf bis zum nächsten Morgen niemand mehr das Haus verlassen!23Der HERR wird durch das Land gehen, um die Ägypter ´mit einer tödlichen Plage` zu schlagen. Wenn er dann das Blut an den Pfosten und am oberen Balken der Tür sieht, wird er dort vorübergehen und dem Todesengel[6] nicht gestatten, in eure Häuser einzudringen und euch zu töten.24Haltet euch für alle Zeiten an den Brauch dieses Festes[7]. Für euch und eure Nachkommen soll dies durch alle Generationen eine bleibende Ordnung sein.25Auch wenn ihr in das Land kommt, das der HERR euch nach seiner Zusage geben wird, sollt ihr dieses Fest weiter feiern.26Wenn eure Kinder euch dann fragen: ›Was bedeutet dieses Fest für euch?‹,27dann erklärt es ihnen so: ›Wir schlachten ein Passaopfer für den HERRN, weil er ´damals` in Ägypten an den Häusern der Israeliten vorübergegangen ist[8]: er schlug die Ägypter ´mit einer tödlichen Plage`, aber unsere Häuser verschonte er.‹« ´Als die Israeliten das hörten`, knieten sie nieder und beteten ´den HERRN` an.28Dann gingen sie ´nach Hause` und bereiteten alles genau so vor, wie der HERR es Mose und Aaron aufgetragen hatte.
Zehntes Strafgericht: Tötung der erstgeborenen Nachkommen
29Gegen Mitternacht tötete der HERR alle ´männlichen` Erstgeborenen im Land Ägypten – angefangen vom ältesten Sohn des Pharaos auf dem Thron bis zum erstgeborenen Sohn des Gefangenen im Kerker. Auch beim Vieh ´tötete er` alle erstgeborenen ´männlichen` Jungtiere.30In dieser Nacht wurden alle Ägypter einschließlich des Pharaos und seiner Beamten aus dem Schlaf gerissen. Im ganzen Land hörte man lautes Klagen. Es gab kein Haus, in dem nicht ein Toter gelegen hätte.31Da ließ der Pharao noch in der Nacht Mose und Aaron zu sich rufen und forderte sie auf: »Verlasst mein Volk so schnell wie möglich – ihr alle vom Volk Israel! Geht und bringt dem HERRN eure Opfer dar[9], wie ihr es verlangt habt.32Nehmt eure Schafe, Ziegen und Rinder mit, ganz wie ihr wollt! Nur geht endlich! Und betet für mich, dass Gott mich wieder segnet.[10]«33Die Ägypter drängten die Israeliten, möglichst schnell das Land zu verlassen. »Sonst müssen wir noch alle sterben!«, sagten sie.
Der Auszug des Volkes Israel aus Ägypten
34Die Israeliten nahmen die Backschüsseln mit dem ungesäuerten Brotteig, schlugen sie in ihre Obergewänder ein und trugen sie auf den Schultern.35Sie hatten Moses Anweisung befolgt und von den Ägyptern silberne und goldene Wertgegenstände und ´kostbare` Kleidung erbeten.36Der HERR hatte ihnen bei den Ägyptern Gunst verschafft. Deshalb hatten sie alles bekommen, worum sie gebeten hatten. Auf diese Weise nahmen sie den Ägyptern ihre Reichtümer weg.37So brach das Volk Israel auf und zog von Ramses nach Sukkot. Es waren ungefähr 600.000 Männer, ´Frauen und` Kinder nicht mitgerechnet.38Dazu kamen große Herden von Schafen, Ziegen und Rindern. Auch viele Leute, die nicht zum Volk Israel gehörten, schlossen sich ihnen an.39´Unterwegs` backten die Israeliten aus dem Teig, den sie aus Ägypten mitgebracht hatten, ungesäuerte Brotfladen. Da sie so plötzlich aus Ägypten vertrieben worden waren, hatten sie keine Zeit mehr gehabt, den Teig durchsäuern zu lassen und Verpflegung für die Reise zuzubereiten.40Insgesamt hatten die Israeliten 430 Jahre in Ägypten gelebt.41Auf den Tag genau nach 430 Jahren zog das Volk des HERRN nach Stämmen geordnet[11] aus Ägypten aus.42Damals wachte der HERR während der ganzen Nacht über die Israeliten, um sie sicher aus Ägypten zu führen. Darum sollen dem HERRN zu Ehren alle kommenden Generationen der Israeliten während dieser Nacht wachen.
Weitere Erläuterungen für das Passafest
43Der HERR sagte zu Mose und Aaron: »Folgende Ordnungen gelten für das Passamahl: Es darf keiner davon essen, der nicht zu Israel gehört!44Ausländische Sklaven, die ihr gekauft habt, dürfen davon essen, wenn ihr sie vorher beschneidet.45Fremde, die nur vorübergehend bei euch sind, und ausländische Lohnarbeiter dürfen nicht am Mahl teilnehmen.46Verzehrt das Lamm ausschließlich in dem Haus, in dem ihr euch versammelt, und bringt nichts davon nach draußen. Brecht dem Tier keinen Knochen.47Alle, die zur Gemeinschaft des Volkes Israel gehören, sollen das Passafest feiern.48Wenn ein Ausländer bei euch lebt und ebenfalls mir zu Ehren das Passafest feiern möchte, müssen zuerst alle Männer seiner Familie beschnitten werden. Dann darf er am Fest teilnehmen und wird wie ein Einheimischer betrachtet. Unbeschnittene jedoch dürfen niemals vom Passamahl essen.49Für die Einheimischen und für die Ausländer, die sich euch angeschlossen haben, gilt ein und dasselbe Gesetz.«50Alle Israeliten hielten sich an das, was der HERR Mose und Aaron aufgetragen hatte, und befolgten es genau.51An jenem Tag führte der HERR die Israeliten nach Stämmen geordnet[12] aus Ägypten.
Das Passah — Die Verschonung Israels vor dem Gericht
1Und der HERR redete zu Mose und Aaron im Land Ägypten und sprach:2Dieser Monat soll euch der Anfang der Monate sein, er soll für euch der erste Monat des Jahres sein. (2Mo 13,4; 2Mo 34,18; 2Mo 40,17; 5Mo 16,1)3Redet zu der ganzen Gemeinde Israels und sprecht: Am zehnten Tag dieses Monats nehme sich jeder Hausvater ein Lamm, ein Lamm für jedes Haus[1]; (2Mo 12,5; 3Mo 12,6; Jes 53,7; Joh 1,29)4wenn aber das Haus zu klein ist für ein Lamm, so nehme er es gemeinsam mit seinem Nachbarn, der am nächsten bei seinem Haus wohnt, nach der Zahl der Seelen; dabei sollt ihr die Anzahl für das Lamm berechnen, je nachdem jeder zu essen vermag. (4Mo 1,2; 4Mo 1,4; 4Mo 1,18)5Dieses Lamm aber soll makellos[2] sein, männlich und einjährig. Von den Schafen oder Ziegen sollt ihr es nehmen, (3Mo 22,19; 3Mo 22,20; 3Mo 22,21; 5Mo 15,21; 1Petr 1,19)6und ihr sollt es aufbewahren bis zum vierzehnten Tag dieses Monats. Und die ganze Versammlung der Gemeinde Israels soll es zur Abendzeit schächten[3]. (1Mo 9,1; 3Mo 17,13; 3Mo 23,5; 4Mo 9,3; 4Mo 28,16; 5Mo 12,20; 5Mo 16,1; 5Mo 16,6; Jos 5,10; 2Chr 30,15; 2Chr 35,1; Esr 6,19)7Und sie sollen von dem Blut nehmen und damit beide Türpfosten und die Oberschwellen der Häuser bestreichen, in denen sie essen. (2Mo 12,13; 2Mo 12,22; Hes 45,18)8Und sie sollen das Fleisch in derselben Nacht essen: am Feuer gebraten, mit ungesäuertem Brot; mit bitteren Kräutern sollen sie es essen. (4Mo 9,11; 5Mo 16,3; 1Kor 5,7)9Ihr sollt nichts davon roh essen, auch nicht im Wasser gekocht, sondern am Feuer gebraten, sein Haupt samt seinen Schenkeln und den inneren Teilen; (2Chr 35,13)10und ihr sollt nichts davon übrig lassen bis zum anderen Morgen. Wenn aber etwas davon übrig bleibt bis zum Morgen, so sollt ihr es mit Feuer verbrennen. (2Mo 29,34; 2Mo 34,25)11So sollt ihr es aber essen: eure Lenden umgürtet[4], eure Schuhe an euren Füßen und eure Stäbe in euren Händen, und in Eile sollt ihr es essen; es ist das Passah des HERRN.[5] (1Kön 18,46; Ps 34,21; Jes 53,4; Lk 12,35; Joh 1,29; Joh 1,36; Joh 19,36; 1Kor 5,7; Eph 6,14; 1Petr 1,13; 1Petr 1,19; Offb 5,6)12Denn ich will in dieser Nacht durch das Land Ägypten gehen und alle Erstgeburt im Land Ägypten schlagen, vom Menschen bis zum Vieh, und ich will an allen Göttern der Ägypter ein Strafgericht vollziehen, ich, der HERR. (2Mo 6,7; 2Mo 11,4; 2Mo 12,29; 4Mo 33,4; Ps 95,3; Ps 97,9)13Und das Blut soll euch zum Zeichen dienen an euren Häusern, in denen ihr seid. Und wenn ich das Blut sehe, dann werde ich verschonend an euch vorübergehen; und es wird euch keine Plage zu eurem Verderben treffen, wenn ich das Land Ägypten schlagen werde. (2Mo 12,23; Hebr 11,28; Offb 9,4)
Die Einsetzung des Passahfestes
14Und dieser Tag soll euch zum Gedenken sein, und ihr sollt ihn feiern als ein Fest des HERRN bei euren [künftigen] Geschlechtern; als ewige Ordnung sollt ihr ihn feiern. (2Mo 13,8; 3Mo 23,4; Lk 22,19; 1Kor 11,24)15Sieben Tage lang sollt ihr ungesäuertes Brot essen; darum sollt ihr am ersten Tag den Sauerteig aus euren Häusern hinwegtun. Denn wer gesäuertes Brot isst vom ersten Tag an bis zum siebten Tag, dessen Seele soll ausgerottet werden aus Israel! (1Mo 17,14; 2Mo 13,6; 2Mo 34,18; 3Mo 23,6; 4Mo 9,13; 4Mo 28,17; 1Kor 5,7)16Und ihr sollt am ersten Tag eine heilige Versammlung halten, ebenso am siebten Tag eine heilige Versammlung. Keine Arbeit sollt ihr an diesen [Tagen] tun; nur was jeder zur Speise nötig hat, das allein darf von euch zubereitet werden. (3Mo 23,7; 4Mo 28,18; 4Mo 29,1)17Und haltet das Fest der ungesäuerten Brote! Denn eben an diesem Tag habe ich eure Heerscharen aus dem Land Ägypten herausgeführt; darum sollt ihr diesen Tag als ewige Ordnung einhalten bei euren [künftigen] Geschlechtern. (2Mo 7,5; 2Mo 13,8; 4Mo 20,16)18Am vierzehnten Tag des ersten Monats, am Abend, sollt ihr ungesäuertes Brot essen bis zum einundzwanzigsten Tag des Monats, am Abend. (3Mo 23,5; 4Mo 28,16)19Sieben Tage lang darf sich kein Sauerteig in euren Häusern finden. Denn wer gesäuertes Brot isst, dessen Seele soll ausgerottet werden aus der Gemeinde Israels, er sei ein Fremdling oder ein Einheimischer im Land. (2Mo 34,18; 5Mo 16,3)20So esst kein gesäuertes Brot; überall, wo ihr wohnt, sollt ihr ungesäuertes Brot essen!21Und Mose rief alle Ältesten in Israel zu sich und sprach zu ihnen: Macht euch auf und nehmt euch Lämmer für eure Familien und schächtet das Passah! (2Mo 12,3; Mt 26,18; Joh 1,29)22Und nehmt ein Büschel Ysop und taucht es in das Blut im Becken und bestreicht mit diesem Blut im Becken die Oberschwelle und die zwei Türpfosten; und kein Mensch von euch soll zu seiner Haustür hinausgehen bis zum Morgen! (3Mo 14,4; 1Kön 5,13; Ps 51,9; Hebr 9,19)23Denn der HERR wird umhergehen und die Ägypter schlagen. Und wenn er das Blut sehen wird an der Oberschwelle und an den beiden Türpfosten, so wird er, der HERR, an der Tür verschonend vorübergehen und den Verderber nicht in eure Häuser kommen lassen, um zu schlagen. (2Mo 12,13; 2Sam 24,16; Hes 9,4)24Und ihr sollt diese Verordnung einhalten als eine Satzung, die dir und deinen Kindern auf ewig gilt! (2Mo 12,14)25Und nun, wenn ihr in das Land kommt, das euch der HERR geben wird, wie er geredet hat, so bewahrt diesen Dienst. (5Mo 4,5; Jos 5,10)26Und wenn dann eure Kinder zu euch sagen: Was habt ihr da für einen Dienst?, (5Mo 6,7; 5Mo 32,7; Jos 4,6; Ps 78,5)27so sollt ihr sagen: Es ist das Passah-Opfer des HERRN, der an den Häusern der Kinder Israels verschonend vorüberging in Ägypten, als er die Ägypter schlug und unsere Häuser errettete! — Da neigte sich das Volk und betete an. (2Mo 4,31; 2Mo 12,12; 2Mo 12,29; Ps 78,1; Ps 78,51; Spr 4,20)28Und die Kinder Israels gingen hin und machten es so; wie der HERR es Mose und Aaron geboten hatte, genau so machten sie es.
Die zehnte Plage: Der Tod aller Erstgeburt in Ägypten. Der Auszug Israels
29Und es geschah um Mitternacht, da schlug der HERR alle Erstgeburt im Land Ägypten, von dem erstgeborenen Sohn des Pharao, der auf seinem Thron saß, bis zum erstgeborenen Sohn des Gefangenen, der im Gefängnis war, auch alle Erstgeburt des Viehs. (2Mo 11,4; 4Mo 3,13; 4Mo 8,17; 4Mo 33,4; Ps 78,51; Ps 135,8; Ps 136,10)30Da stand der Pharao auf in derselben Nacht, er und alle seine Knechte und alle Ägypter; und es war ein großes Geschrei in Ägypten, denn es gab kein Haus, in dem nicht ein Toter war. (2Mo 11,6; Jak 2,13)31Und er rief Mose und Aaron zu sich in der Nacht und sprach: Macht euch auf und zieht weg von meinem Volk, ihr und die Kinder Israels, und geht hin, dient dem HERRN, wie ihr gesagt habt! (2Mo 5,2; 2Mo 11,1)32Nehmt auch eure Schafe und eure Rinder mit euch, wie ihr gesagt habt, und geht hin und segnet auch mich! (2Mo 10,26; Esr 6,10)33Und die Ägypter drängten das Volk sehr, um sie so schnell wie möglich aus dem Land zu treiben, denn sie sprachen: Wir sind alle des Todes! (2Mo 11,8; Ps 105,38)34Und das Volk trug seinen Teig, ehe er gesäuert war, ihre Backschüsseln in ihre Mäntel gebunden, auf ihren Schultern.35Und die Kinder Israels handelten nach dem Wort Moses und forderten von den Ägyptern silberne und goldene Geräte und Kleider. (2Mo 3,21)36Dazu gab der HERR dem Volk bei den Ägyptern Gunst, dass sie ihr Begehren erfüllten; und so beraubten sie Ägypten. (2Mo 11,2; Apg 2,47; Apg 7,36)37So zogen die Kinder Israels aus von Ramses nach Sukkot, etwa 600 000 Mann Fußvolk, ungerechnet die Frauen und Kinder. (1Mo 47,11; 2Mo 38,26; 4Mo 1,46; 4Mo 11,21; 4Mo 33,3)38Es zog aber auch viel Mischvolk[6] mit ihnen, und Schafe und Rinder und sehr viel Vieh. (4Mo 11,4; Neh 13,3)39Und sie machten aus dem Teig, den sie aus Ägypten gebracht hatten, ungesäuerte Brotfladen; denn er war nicht gesäuert, weil sie aus Ägypten vertrieben worden waren und sich nicht aufhalten konnten; und sie hatten sich sonst keine Wegzehrung zubereitet.40Die Zeit aber, welche die Kinder Israels in Ägypten gewohnt hatten, betrug 430 Jahre. (1Mo 15,13; Apg 7,6; Gal 6,17)41Und es geschah, als die 430 Jahre verflossen waren, ja, es geschah an eben diesem Tag, da zog das ganze Heer des HERRN aus dem Land Ägypten. (2Mo 6,26)42Es ist eine Nacht, die dem HERRN gewissenhaft eingehalten werden soll, weil er sie aus dem Land Ägypten herausgeführt hat. Das ist diese Nacht, die dem HERRN gewissenhaft eingehalten werden soll, für alle Kinder Israels, für ihre [künftigen] Geschlechter. (2Mo 12,12)
Verordnungen zum Passah
43Und der HERR sprach zu Mose und Aaron: Dies ist die Ordnung des Passah: Kein Fremdling darf davon essen. (3Mo 22,10)44Jeder um Geld erkaufte Knecht eines Mannes aber kann davon essen, sobald du ihn beschnitten hast. (1Mo 17,11)45Ein Bewohner ohne Bürgerrecht und ein Mietling darf nicht davon essen.46In einem Haus soll man es essen. Ihr sollt von dem Fleisch nichts vor das Haus hinaustragen, und kein Knochen soll ihm zerbrochen werden. (2Mo 12,4; 2Mo 12,20; 4Mo 9,12; Joh 19,33; Joh 19,36)47Die ganze Gemeinde Israels soll es feiern. (2Mo 12,3; 2Mo 12,6; 4Mo 9,13)48Und wenn sich bei dir ein Fremdling aufhält und dem HERRN das Passah feiern will, so soll alles Männliche bei ihm beschnitten werden, und dann erst darf er hinzutreten, um es zu feiern; und er soll sein wie ein Einheimischer des Landes, denn kein Unbeschnittener darf davon essen. (2Mo 12,44; Hes 44,9; 1Kor 11,27)49Ein und dasselbe Gesetz soll für den Einheimischen und für den Fremdling gelten, der unter euch wohnt. (4Mo 9,14; 4Mo 15,15; Gal 3,28; Eph 2,19; Eph 3,6)50Und alle Kinder Israels machten es genau so, wie es der HERR dem Mose und Aaron geboten hatte, genau so machten sie es. (2Mo 7,6; 2Mo 7,10; 2Mo 8,13; 2Mo 12,28)51Und es geschah an eben diesem Tag, da führte der HERR die Kinder Israels nach ihren Heerscharen aus dem Land Ägypten. (2Mo 12,41; 2Mo 13,2; 2Mo 13,9; Ps 136,11; Jes 40,26)
1The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt,2‘This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year.3Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb[1] for his family, one for each household.4If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbour, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat.5The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats.6Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight.7Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the door-frames of the houses where they eat the lambs.8That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast.9Do not eat the meat raw or boiled in water, but roast it over a fire – with the head, legs and internal organs.10Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it.11This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover.12‘On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord.13The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.14‘This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord – a lasting ordinance.15For seven days you are to eat bread made without yeast. On the first day remove the yeast from your houses, for whoever eats anything with yeast in it from the first day until the seventh must be cut off from Israel.16On the first day hold a sacred assembly, and another one on the seventh day. Do no work at all on these days, except to prepare food for everyone to eat; that is all you may do.17‘Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread, because it was on this very day that I brought your divisions out of Egypt. Celebrate this day as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come.18In the first month you are to eat bread made without yeast, from the evening of the fourteenth day until the evening of the twenty-first day.19For seven days no yeast is to be found in your houses. And anyone, whether foreigner or native-born, who eats anything with yeast in it must be cut off from the community of Israel.20Eat nothing made with yeast. Wherever you live, you must eat unleavened bread.’21Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and said to them, ‘Go at once and select the animals for your families and slaughter the Passover lamb.22Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin and put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the door-frame. None of you shall go out of the door of your house until morning.23When the Lord goes through the land to strike down the Egyptians, he will see the blood on the top and sides of the door-frame and will pass over that doorway, and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down.24‘Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your descendants.25When you enter the land that the Lord will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony.26And when your children ask you, “What does this ceremony mean to you?”27then tell them, “It is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.” ’ Then the people bowed down and worshipped.28The Israelites did just what the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron.29At midnight the Lord struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well.30Pharaoh and all his officials and all the Egyptians got up during the night, and there was loud wailing in Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead.
The exodus
31During the night Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, ‘Up! Leave my people, you and the Israelites! Go, worship the Lord as you have requested.32Take your flocks and herds, as you have said, and go. And also bless me.’33The Egyptians urged the people to hurry and leave the country. ‘For otherwise,’ they said, ‘we will all die!’34So the people took their dough before the yeast was added, and carried it on their shoulders in kneading troughs wrapped in clothing.35The Israelites did as Moses instructed and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold and for clothing.36The Lord had made the Egyptians favourably disposed towards the people, and they gave them what they asked for; so they plundered the Egyptians.37The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Sukkoth. There were about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides women and children.38Many other people went up with them, and also large droves of livestock, both flocks and herds.39With the dough the Israelites had brought from Egypt, they baked loaves of unleavened bread. The dough was without yeast because they had been driven out of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food for themselves.40Now the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt[2] was 430 years.41At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the Lord’s divisions left Egypt.42Because the Lord kept vigil that night to bring them out of Egypt, on this night all the Israelites are to keep vigil to honour the Lord for the generations to come.
Passover restrictions
43The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, ‘These are the regulations for the Passover meal: ‘No foreigner may eat it.44Any slave you have bought may eat it after you have circumcised him,45but a temporary resident or a hired worker may not eat it.46‘It must be eaten inside the house; take none of the meat outside the house. Do not break any of the bones.47The whole community of Israel must celebrate it.48‘A foreigner residing among you who wants to celebrate the Lord’s Passover must have all the males in his household circumcised; then he may take part like one born in the land. No uncircumcised male may eat it.49The same law applies both to the native-born and to the foreigner residing among you.’50All the Israelites did just what the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron.51And on that very day the Lord brought the Israelites out of Egypt by their divisions.
