1 Die Hungersnot lastete weiter schwer auf dem Land ´Kanaan`. 2 Als das Getreide, das die Brüder aus Ägypten mitgebracht hatten, aufgebraucht war, sagte ihr Vater zu ihnen: »Geht wieder nach Ägypten und kauft uns zu essen!« 3 Doch Juda entgegnete: »Der Mann hat uns ausdrücklich gewarnt: ›Ihr dürft mir nicht mehr unter die Augen treten, wenn euer jüngster Bruder nicht bei euch ist!‹ 4 Wenn du Benjamin mitgehen lässt, ziehen wir wieder los und kaufen Getreide. 5 Wenn er aber nicht mitkommen darf, dann gehen auch wir nicht. Denn der Mann hat keinen Zweifel daran gelassen, dass wir uns ohne Benjamin nicht mehr in seine Nähe wagen sollten.« 6 Jakob^[1] warf ihnen vor: »Warum habt ihr dem Mann überhaupt erzählt, dass ihr noch einen Bruder habt? Warum habt ihr mir das angetan?« 7 »Der Mann hat sich genau nach uns und unserer Familie erkundigt«, antworteten sie. »›Lebt euer Vater noch? Habt ihr noch einen Bruder?‹, wollte er wissen, und darum haben wir ihm wahrheitsgemäß Auskunft gegeben. Wir konnten ja nicht ahnen, dass er sagen würde: ›Bringt euren Bruder her!‹« 8 Juda bat seinen Vater Jakob^[2]: »Gib mir den Jungen mit! Dann können wir endlich aufbrechen und ´nach Ägypten` ziehen, bevor wir alle mitsamt unseren Kindern verhungern^[3]! 9 Ich bürge persönlich für ihn, und du kannst ihn von mir zurückfordern. Wenn ich ihn dir nicht unversehrt zurückbringe, soll diese Schuld mein ganzes Leben lang auf mir lasten! 10 Hätten wir nicht ´so lange` gezögert, wären wir jetzt schon zweimal wieder da!« 11 Da lenkte ihr Vater Jakob ein: »Wenn es denn unbedingt sein muss, dann ´nehmt Benjamin mit`. Füllt eure Säcke mit den besten Erzeugnissen des Landes und bringt sie dem Mann als Geschenk mit: etwas von ´den kostbaren Harzen` Mastix, Ladanum und Tragakant, dazu Honig, Pistazien und Mandeln. 12 Nehmt den doppelten Geldbetrag mit und zahlt das Geld, das oben in euren Säcken lag, wieder zurück. Vielleicht war das Ganze ja nur ein Versehen. 13 Macht euch mit Benjamin auf den Weg und geht wieder nach Ägypten^[4]. 14 Der allmächtige Gott schenke, dass der Mann Erbarmen hat und euch mit Benjamin und Simeon wieder zurückkehren lässt. Und wenn ich am Ende euch alle verliere, dann muss es wohl so sein.^[5]«

Josefs Brüder reisen zum zweiten Mal nach Ägypten

15 Die Brüder nahmen die Geschenke und den doppelten Geldbetrag und reisten mit Benjamin nach Ägypten. Dort traten sie vor Josef. 16 Als Josef sah, dass sie Benjamin mitgebracht hatten, sagte er zu seinem Hausverwalter: »Führ die Männer in meinen Palast! Lass ein Tier schlachten und zubereiten! Sie werden heute Mittag mit mir essen.« 17 Der Verwalter gehorchte und führte die Brüder in Josefs Palast. 18 Sie bekamen es mit der Angst zu tun, denn sie dachten: »Das ist bestimmt wegen des Geldes, das letztes Mal wieder in unseren Getreidesäcken war. Sie werden uns packen und verhaften^[6], unsere Esel wegnehmen und uns zu Sklaven machen!« 19 Noch vor dem Palasttor sprachen sie den Hausverwalter an: 20 »Bitte, Herr! Wir waren schon einmal hier, um Getreide zu kaufen. 21 Als wir ´auf der Heimreise` in der Herberge unsere Säcke aufmachten, lag bei jedem von uns der volle Geldbetrag oben im Sack. Wir haben alles wieder mitgebracht 22 und weiteres Geld mitgenommen, um noch einmal Getreide zu kaufen. Wer das Geld in unsere Säcke gelegt hat, ist uns ein Rätsel.« 23 Der Hausverwalter antwortete: »Seid unbesorgt.^[7] Ihr braucht keine Angst zu haben. Der Gott, dem ihr und euer Vater dient, muss euch einen Schatz in eure Säcke gelegt haben. Denn euer Geld habe ich bekommen.« Er brachte Simeon zu ihnen 24 und führte sie in Josefs Palast. Dort gab er ihnen Wasser, damit sie sich die Füße waschen konnten, und fütterte ihre Esel. 25 Die Brüder legten ihre Geschenke zurecht und warteten auf Josef, der um die Mittagszeit zu ihnen stoßen sollte. Man hatte ihnen gesagt, dass sie bei ihm zum Essen geladen seien. 26 Als Josef den Palast betrat, überreichten sie ihm ihre Geschenke und warfen sich vor ihm zu Boden. 27 Josef erkundigte sich, wie es ihnen ging, und fragte dann: »Geht es eurem alten Vater gut, von dem ihr mir erzählt habt? Lebt er noch?« 28 »Unser Vater, dein Diener, lebt noch, und es geht ihm gut«, antworteten sie. Dann verbeugten sie sich und fielen ´erneut` vor ihm nieder. 29 Josef sah seinen Bruder Benjamin an, der die gleiche Mutter hatte wie er, und fragte: »Ist das euer jüngster Bruder, von dem ihr mir erzählt habt?« Zu Benjamin sagte er: »Gott segne dich^[8], mein Sohn!« 30 Dann aber verließ er schnell den Raum. Denn das Wiedersehen mit seinem Bruder hatte ihn so sehr aufgewühlt, dass ihm die Tränen kamen, und er eilte in sein Zimmer, um sich auszuweinen. 31 Nachdem er sich das Gesicht gewaschen hatte, ging er wieder zu den Brüdern zurück. Er nahm sich zusammen und befahl ´seinen Dienern`, das Essen aufzutragen. 32 Josef saß an einem eigenen Tisch, die Brüder an einem anderen und an einem dritten die Ägypter, ´die an der Mahlzeit teilnahmen`. Denn die Ägypter essen nicht mit den Hebräern an einem Tisch, weil sie befürchten, sich dadurch zu verunreinigen^[9]. 33 Man setzte die Brüder Josef gegenüber, und zwar in der richtigen Reihenfolge vom Ältesten bis zum Jüngsten. ´Als sie es bemerkten`, schauten sie einander verwundert an. 34 Als Zeichen besonderer Ehre ließ Josef ihnen von den Gerichten auftragen, die an seinem eigenen Tisch serviert wurden. Sein Bruder Benjamin bekam fünfmal so viel wie die anderen. Josef und die Brüder tranken und gerieten in ausgelassene Stimmung.

1 Now the famine was still severe in the land. 2 So when they had eaten all the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, ‘Go back and buy us a little more food.’ 3 But Judah said to him, ‘The man warned us solemnly, “You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.” 4 If you will send our brother along with us, we will go down and buy food for you. 5 But if you will not send him, we will not go down, because the man said to us, “You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.” ’ 6 Israel asked, ‘Why did you bring this trouble on me by telling the man you had another brother?’ 7 They replied, ‘The man questioned us closely about ourselves and our family. “Is your father still living?” he asked us. “Do you have another brother?” We simply answered his questions. How were we to know he would say, “Bring your brother down here”?’ 8 Then Judah said to Israel his father, ‘Send the boy along with me and we will go at once, so that we and you and our children may live and not die. 9 I myself will guarantee his safety; you can hold me personally responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him here before you, I will bear the blame before you all my life. 10 As it is, if we had not delayed, we could have gone and returned twice.’ 11 Then their father Israel said to them, ‘If it must be, then do this: put some of the best products of the land in your bags and take them down to the man as a gift – a little balm and a little honey, some spices and myrrh, some pistachio nuts and almonds. 12 Take double the amount of silver with you, for you must return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks. They hurried down to Egypt and presented themselves to Joseph. 16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, ‘Take these men to my house, slaughter an animal and prepare a meal; they are to eat with me at noon.’ 17 The man did as Joseph told him and took the men to Joseph’s house. 18 Now the men were frightened when they were taken to his house. They thought, ‘We were brought here because of the silver that was put back into our sacks the first time. He wants to attack us and overpower us and seize us as slaves and take our donkeys.’ 19 So they went up to Joseph’s steward and spoke to him at the entrance to the house. 20 ‘We beg your pardon, our lord,’ they said, ‘we came down here the first time to buy food. 21 But at the place where we stopped for the night we opened our sacks and each of us found his silver – the exact weight – in the mouth of his sack. So we have brought it back with us. 22 We have also brought additional silver with us to buy food. We don’t know who put our silver in our sacks.’ 23 ‘It’s all right,’ he said. ‘Don’t be afraid. Your God, the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks; I received your silver.’ Then he brought Simeon out to them. 24 The steward took the men into Joseph’s house, gave them water to wash their feet and provided fodder for their donkeys. 25 They prepared their gifts for Joseph’s arrival at noon, because they had heard that they were to eat there. 26 When Joseph came home, they presented to him the gifts they had brought into the house, and they bowed down before him to the ground. 27 He asked them how they were, and then he said, ‘How is your aged father you told me about? Is he still living?’ 28 They replied, ‘Your servant our father is still alive and well.’ And they bowed down, prostrating themselves before him. 29 As he looked about and saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother’s son, he asked, ‘Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?’ And he said, ‘God be gracious to you, my son.’ 30 Deeply moved at the sight of his brother, Joseph hurried out and looked for a place to weep. He went into his private room and wept there. 31 After he had washed his face, he came out and, controlling himself, said, ‘Serve the food.’ 32 They served him by himself, the brothers by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because Egyptians could not eat with Hebrews, for that is detestable to Egyptians. 33 The men had been seated before him in the order of their ages, from the firstborn to the youngest; and they looked at each other in astonishment. 34 When portions were served to them from Joseph’s table, Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as anyone else’s. So they feasted and drank freely with him.

And he brought Simeon out unto them. 24 And the man brought the men into Joseph' house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses provender. 25 And they made ready the present against Joseph came at noon: for they heard that they should eat bread there. 26 And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth. 27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said, Is your father well, the old man of whom ye spake? Is he yet alive? 28 And they answered, Thy servant our father is in good health, he is yet alive. And they bowed down their heads, and made obeisance. 29 And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother' son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son. 30 And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there. 31 And he washed his face, and went out, and refrained himself, and said, Set on bread. 32 And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians. 33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men marvelled one at another. 34 And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin' mess was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.
