Die Richter Tola und Jaïr

1 Auf Abimelech folgte ´ein Mann namens` Tola, der Israel ´von seinen Feinden` befreite. Er war ein Sohn Puas und Enkel Dodos, kam aus dem Stamm Issachar und wohnte in Schamir im Bergland von Efraim. 2 Dreiundzwanzig Jahre lang führte er Israel als Richter. Als er starb, begrub man ihn in Schamir. 3 Auf Tola folgte Jaïr, ein Mann aus Gilead. Er führte Israel zweiundzwanzig Jahre lang als Richter. 4 Jaïr hatte dreißig Söhne. Jeder von ihnen besaß seinen eigenen Esel. Ihnen gehörten dreißig Dörfer im Gebiet von Gilead, die man bis heute »Dörfer Jaïrs« nennt. 5 Als Jaïr starb, begrub man ihn in Kamon.

Die Ammoniter unterdrücken die Israeliten in der Landschaft Gilead

6 Wieder taten die Israeliten, was dem HERRN missfiel: Sie verehrten die Götzen Baal und Astarte^[1], dazu die Götter der Aramäer, der Sidonier, der Moabiter, der Ammoniter und der Philister. Den HERRN aber verließen sie und hörten auf, ihm zu dienen. (Ri 2,11) 7 Da wurde der HERR zornig auf die Israeliten und gab sie in die Gewalt der Philister und der Ammoniter. 8 Achtzehn Jahre lang bedrängten und unterdrückten die Ammoniter in jener Zeit alle israelitischen Stämme, die jenseits des Jordans in der Landschaft Gilead im ehemaligen Gebiet der Amoriter lebten. 9 Die Ammoniter überschritten sogar den Jordan und griffen die Stämme Juda, Benjamin und Efraim an. Die Israeliten waren in großer Bedrängnis. 10 Da schrien sie zum HERRN um Hilfe und bekannten: »Wir haben gegen dich gesündigt. Wir haben dich, unseren Gott, verlassen und die Baals-Götzen verehrt.« 11 Der HERR erwiderte: »Ich habe euch aus Ägypten ´herausgeführt` und ´euch gegen` die Amoriter, die Ammoniter, die Philister, 12 die Sidonier, die Amalekiter und die Maoniter^[2] ´beigestanden. Sie alle` unterdrückten euch, und als ihr zu mir um Hilfe rieft, befreite ich euch aus ihrer Gewalt. 13 Aber ihr habt mich verlassen und euch anderen Göttern zugewandt^[3]. Deshalb werde ich euch nicht noch einmal befreien. 14 Geht und schreit um Hilfe zu den Göttern, die ihr euch ausgesucht habt! Sollen sie euch doch aus der Bedrängnis befreien, in die ihr geraten seid.« 15 Die Israeliten antworteten dem HERRN: »Wir haben gesündigt. Mach mit uns, was du für richtig hältst. Aber bitte rette uns jetzt aus dieser Not!« 16 Sie beseitigten die Bilder der fremden Götter und wandten sich wieder dem HERRN zu^[4]. Da beschloss er, ihrem Elend ein Ende zu machen.^[5]

Jiftach soll Israel retten

17 ´Wieder einmal` zogen die Ammoniter ihre Truppen zusammen und schlugen ihr Heerlager im Gebiet von Gilead auf. Die Israeliten versammelten ihr Heer in Mizpa^[6]. (Ri 20,1; 1Sam 7,1) 18 Das Volk und die führenden Männer von Gilead fragten sich: »Wer kann uns in den Kampf gegen die Ammoniter führen?« ´Sie beschlossen`: »Wer das übernimmt, soll zum Herrscher über ganz Gilead werden.«

1 Tola rose up to save Israel. That happened after the time of Abimelek. Tola was from the tribe of Issachar. He was the son of Puah, who was the son of Dodo. Tola lived in Shamir. It’s in the hill country of Ephraim. 2 Tola led Israel for 23 years. After he died, he was buried in Shamir.

Jair

3 Jair became the leader after Tola. Jair was from the land of Gilead. He led Israel for 22 years. 4 He had 30 sons. They rode on 30 donkeys. His sons controlled 30 towns in Gilead. Those towns are called Havvoth Jair to this day. 5 After Jair died, he was buried in Kamon.

Jephthah

6 Once again the Israelites did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. They served gods that were named Baal. They served female gods that were named Ashtoreth. They worshipped the gods of Aram and Sidon. They served the gods of Moab and Ammon. They also worshipped the gods of the Philistines. The Israelites deserted the LORD. They didn’t serve him anymore. 7 So the LORD became very angry with them. He handed them over to the Philistines and the Ammonites. 8 That year they broke Israel’s power completely. They treated the Israelites badly for 18 years. The people who did this lived east of the River Jordan. They lived in Gilead. That was the land of the Amorites. 9 The Ammonites also went across the Jordan. They crossed over to fight against the tribes of Judah, Benjamin and Ephraim. Israel was suffering terribly. 10 Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD. They said, ‘We have sinned against you. We have deserted our God. We have served gods that are named Baal.’ 11 The LORD replied, ‘The Egyptians and Amorites treated you badly. So did the Ammonites and Philistines. 12 And so did the Amalekites and the people of Sidon and Maon. Each time you cried out to me for help. And I saved you from their power. 13 But you have deserted me. You have served other gods. So I will not save you anymore. 14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you get into trouble!’ 15 But the Israelites replied to the LORD, ‘We have sinned. Do to us what you think is best. But please save us now.’ 16 Then they got rid of the false gods that were among them. They served the LORD. And he couldn’t stand to see Israel suffer anymore. 17 The Ammonites were called together to fight. They camped in the land of Gilead. Then the Israelites gathered together. They camped at the city of Mizpah. 18 The leaders of Gilead spoke to one another. They said, ‘Who will lead the attack against the Ammonites? That person will be the ruler of all the people who live in Gilead.’
