1Danach wurde Jesus vom Geist ´Gottes` in die Wüste geführt[1], weil er dort vom Teufel versucht werden sollte. (Mk 1,12; Lk 4,1)2Nachdem er vierzig Tage und Nächte gefastet hatte, war er sehr hungrig.3Da trat der Versucher an ihn heran und sagte: »Wenn du Gottes Sohn bist, dann befiehl, dass diese Steine hier zu Brot werden!«4Aber Jesus gab ihm zur Antwort: »Es heißt in der Schrift: ›Der Mensch lebt[2] nicht nur von Brot, sondern von jedem Wort, das aus Gottes Mund kommt.‹ « (5Mo 8,3)5Daraufhin ging der Teufel mit ihm in die Heilige Stadt, stellte ihn auf einen Vorsprung des Tempeldaches[3]6und sagte: »Wenn du Gottes Sohn bist, dann stürz dich hinunter! Denn es heißt in der Schrift: ›Er wird dir seine Engel schicken[4]; sie werden dich auf ihren Händen tragen, damit du mit deinem Fuß nicht an einen Stein stößt.‹ « (Ps 91,11; Ps 91,12)7Jesus entgegnete: »In der Schrift heißt es aber auch: ›Du sollst den Herrn, deinen Gott, nicht herausfordern!‹ « (5Mo 6,16)8Schließlich ging der Teufel mit ihm auf einen sehr hohen Berg, zeigte ihm alle Reiche der Welt mit ihrer Herrlichkeit9und sagte: »Das alles will ich dir geben, wenn du dich vor mir niederwirfst und mich anbetest.«10Darauf sagte Jesus zu ihm: »Weg mit dir, Satan! Denn es heißt in der Schrift: ›Den Herrn, deinen Gott, sollst du anbeten; ihm allein sollst du dienen.‹ « (5Mo 6,13)11Da ließ der Teufel von ihm ab. Und Engel kamen zu ihm und dienten[5] ihm.
Jesu erstes öffentliches Wirken in Galiläa
12Als Jesus hörte, dass Johannes gefangen genommen worden war, zog er sich nach Galiläa zurück. (Mk 1,14; Lk 4,14)13Allerdings blieb er nicht in Nazaret, sondern wohnte von da an in Kafarnaum, ´einer Stadt` am See, im Gebiet von Sebulon und Naftali.14So erfüllte sich, was durch den Propheten Jesaja vorausgesagt worden war:15»Das Land Sebulon und das Land Naftali, das Gebiet gegen den See hin[6], die Gegend jenseits des Jordans[7], das Galiläa der ´heidnischen` Völker –16das Volk, das in der Finsternis lebt, sieht ein großes Licht; über denen, die im Land der Todesschatten wohnen, ist ein helles Licht aufgegangen.«17Von da an begann Jesus zu verkünden: »Kehrt um! Denn das Himmelreich ist nahe.«
Die Berufung der ersten Jünger
18Als Jesus am See von Galiläa entlangging, sah er zwei Fischer, die auf dem See ihr Netz auswarfen. Es waren Brüder, Simon, auch Petrus genannt, und Andreas. (Mk 1,16; Lk 5,1; Joh 1,35)19Jesus sagte zu ihnen: »Kommt, folgt mir nach! Ich will euch zu Menschenfischern machen.«20Sofort ließen sie ihre Netze liegen und folgten ihm.21Als er von dort weiterging, sah er wieder zwei Brüder, Jakobus, den Sohn des Zebedäus, und Johannes; sie waren mit ihrem Vater Zebedäus im Boot und brachten ihre Netze in Ordnung. Jesus forderte sie auf, mit ihm zu kommen.[8]22Und sofort ließen sie das Boot und ihren Vater zurück und folgten Jesus.
Der Dienst Jesu und seine Wirkung
23Jesus zog durch ganz Galiläa; er lehrte in den[9] Synagogen, verkündete die Botschaft[10] vom Reich ´Gottes` und heilte alle Kranken und Leidenden[11] im Volk. (Mk 3,7; Lk 6,17)24So wurde er ´über Galiläa hinaus` in ganz Syrien bekannt. Man brachte alle Leidenden zu ihm, Menschen, die von den verschiedensten Krankheiten und Beschwerden geplagt waren, auch Besessene, Epileptiker und Gelähmte, und er machte sie gesund.25Große Menschenmengen folgten ihm aus Galiläa und dem Zehnstädtegebiet, aus Jerusalem und Judäa und aus der Gegend jenseits des Jordans.
1The Holy Spirit led Jesus into the desert. There the devil tempted him.2After 40 days and 40 nights of going without eating, Jesus was hungry.3The tempter came to him. He said, ‘If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.’4Jesus answered, ‘It is written, “Man must not live only on bread. He must also live on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” ’ (5Mo 8,3)5Then the devil took Jesus to the holy city. He had him stand on the highest point of the temple.6‘If you are the Son of God,’ he said, ‘throw yourself down. It is written, ‘ “The Lord will command his angels to take good care of you. They will lift you up in their hands. Then you won’t trip over a stone.” ’ (Ps 91,11; Ps 91,12)7Jesus answered him, ‘It is also written, “Do not test the Lord your God.” ’ (5Mo 6,16)8Finally, the devil took Jesus to a very high mountain. He showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.9‘If you bow down and worship me,’ he said, ‘I will give you all this.’10Jesus said to him, ‘Get away from me, Satan! It is written, “Worship the Lord your God. He is the only one you should serve.” ’ (5Mo 6,13)11Then the devil left Jesus. Angels came and took care of him.
Jesus begins to preach
12John had been put in prison. When Jesus heard about this, he returned to Galilee.13Jesus left Nazareth and went to live in the city of Capernaum. It was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali.14In that way, what the prophet Isaiah had said came true. He had said,15‘Land of Zebulun! Land of Naphtali! Galilee, where Gentiles live! Land along the Mediterranean Sea! Territory east of the River Jordan!16The people who are now living in darkness have seen a great light. They are now living in a very dark land. But a light has shone on them.’ (Jes 9,1; Jes 9,2)17From that time on Jesus began to preach. ‘Turn away from your sins!’ he said. ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’
Jesus chooses his first disciples
18One day Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee. There he saw two brothers, Simon Peter and his brother Andrew. They were throwing a net into the lake, because they were fishermen.19‘Come and follow me,’ Jesus said. ‘I will send you out to fish for people.’20At once they left their nets and followed him.21Going on from there, he saw two other brothers. They were James, son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee. As they were preparing their nets, Jesus called out to them.22Right away they left the boat and their father and followed Jesus.
Jesus heals ill people
23Jesus went all over Galilee. There he taught in the synagogues. He preached the good news of God’s kingdom. He healed every illness and disease the people had.24News about him spread all over Syria. People brought to him all who were suffering different kinds of illnesses. Some were suffering great pain. Others were controlled by demons. Some were shaking wildly. Others couldn’t move at all. And Jesus healed all of them.25Large crowds followed him. People came from Galilee, from the area known as the Ten Cities, and from Jerusalem and Judea. Others came from the area across the River Jordan.
