Saul und Jonatan erheben sich gegen die Philister

1 Saul war … Jahre alt^[1], als er König wurde. Er regierte zwei Jahre^[2] über Israel. (Apg 13,21) 2 Er stellte ´ein Heer von` dreitausend Israeliten zusammen. Zweitausend unterstanden seinem Befehl, ´sie waren` in Michmas und im Bergland von Bet-El ´stationiert`. Tausend Mann standen unter dem Befehl ´seines Sohnes` Jonatan im benjaminitischen Gibea. Die übrigen Leute hatte Saul nach Hause entlassen. 3 ´Eines Tages` erschlug Jonatan die Wachposten der Philister, die in Gibea^[3] aufgestellt waren. Das sprach sich bei den Philistern herum. Saul ließ im ganzen Land das Signalhorn blasen, denn er wollte, dass auch die Hebräer, ´die sich den Philistern angeschlossen hatten`^[4], von ´Jonatans Heldentat` erfuhren. (1Sam 14,11; 1Sam 14,21) 4 So verbreitete sich überall in Israel die Nachricht: »Saul hat die Wachposten der Philister erschlagen. Dadurch hat Israel sich den Hass der Philister zugezogen!^[5]« Alle wehrfähigen Männer wurden zusammengerufen ´und sammelten sich` unter Sauls Führung in Gilgal. 5 Auch die Philister zogen ihr Heer zusammen, um gegen Israel zu kämpfen. ´Sie hatten` dreitausend^[6] Streitwagen, sechstausend Reiter und ´eine Menge` Fußsoldaten, ´unzählbar` wie der Sand am Meer. Sie rückten heran und schlugen ihr Lager bei Michmas östlich von Bet-Awen auf. 6 Als die Israeliten die Übermacht ´der Philister` sahen, der ihre eigenen Truppen nicht standhalten konnten, versteckten sie sich in Höhlen und im Dickicht, in Felsspalten, Grabkammern und Zisternen.

Saul handelt voreilig

7 Einige flohen sogar über den Jordan^[7] ins Gebiet von Gad und Gilead. Saul hielt sich immer noch in Gilgal auf. Die Kämpfer, ´die noch bei ihm waren`, hatten große Angst. 8 Samuel hatte von Saul verlangt, sieben Tage ´auf ihn` zu warten. Aber Samuel war ´auch nach einer Woche` noch nicht in Gilgal angekommen, und die Männer begannen schon davonzulaufen. 9 Da sagte Saul: »Bringt mir ´die Tiere für` das Brandopfer und für die Gemeinschaftsopfer her.« Dann brachte er ´selbst` das Brandopfer dar. 10 Kaum war er damit fertig, da kam Samuel. Saul ging ihm ein Stück entgegen, um ihn zu begrüßen^[8]. 11 »Was hast du getan?«, stellte Samuel ihn zur Rede. Saul erwiderte: »Die Männer begannen auseinanderzulaufen, als du nicht zum vereinbarten Zeitpunkt hier warst, und die Philister standen bereits in Michmas. 12 Ich dachte: ›Sie werden jeden Moment nach Gilgal vorrücken und mich angreifen, und ich habe noch nichts unternommen, um den HERRN gnädig zu stimmen^[9].‹ Darum habe ich mir ein Herz gefasst und das Opfer selbst dargebracht.« 13 »Das war sehr töricht von dir!«, hielt Samuel ihm vor. »Du hast den Befehl, den der HERR, dein Gott, dir gegeben hat, missachtet. Gerade jetzt hätte der HERR dir ´und deinen Nachkommen` für immer die Königsherrschaft über Israel zugesprochen. 14 Doch nun wird deine Herrschaft nicht von Dauer sein. Der HERR hat schon einen Mann ausgesucht, an dem er Gefallen hat^[10]. Ihn hat er zum Anführer seines Volkes bestimmt. Denn du hast missachtet, was der HERR dir befohlen hat.«

Die Israeliten sind den Philistern unterlegen

15 Samuel verließ Gilgal und ging hinauf nach Gibea in Benjamin. Saul musterte die Leute, die bei ihm geblieben waren:^[11] Es waren nur noch etwa sechshundert Mann. 16 Saul und sein Sohn Jonatan schlugen ihr Lager in Geba auf, während die Philister bei Michmas lagerten. 17 Die Philister entsandten drei Abteilungen von Soldaten aus ihrem Lager, die das Land plündern sollten: eine Abteilung ´nach Norden` in Richtung Ofra in die Gegend von Schual, 18 eine ´nach Westen` in Richtung Bet-Horon und die dritte ´nach Osten` zu dem Höhenzug, von dem aus man ´das Tal` Zeboim und die Wüste sehen kann. 19 ´In jener Zeit` gab es im ganzen Land Israel keinen Schmied. Denn die Philister wollten verhindern, dass die Israeliten^[12] Schwerter oder Speere herstellen konnten. 20 Darum musste jeder in Israel zu den Philistern gehen, wenn er eine Pflugschar, einen Spaten, eine Axt oder eine Sichel^[13] schärfen lassen wollte. 21 Der Preis dafür betrug acht Gramm Silber^[14] bei Pflugscharen und Spaten. ´ Für das Schärfen` von Gabeln und Äxten und für das Aufsetzen ´des Eisens` auf einen Viehtreiberstab musste man vier Gramm Silber^[15] bezahlen. 22 Beim Ausbruch des Krieges besaß also keiner der Männer, die Saul und Jonatan unterstanden, ein Schwert oder einen Speer. Nur Saul und Jonatan waren damit ausgerüstet.

23 Die Philister hatten auch den Pass von Michmas mit einem Wachposten besetzt.

1 Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel, 2 Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent. 3 And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it . And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear. 4 And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal. 5 And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Bethaven. 6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits. 7 And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling. 8 And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed : but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him. 9 And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering. 10 And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him. 11 And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash; 12 Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering. 13 And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever. 14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee. 15 And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men. 16 And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash. 17 And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual: 18 And another company turned the way to Bethhoron: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness. 19 Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears: 20 But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock. 21 Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads. 22 So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found. 23 And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.
