1Jesús, lleno del Espíritu Santo, volvió del Jordán y el Espíritu lo llevó al desierto.2Allí estuvo cuarenta días, y Satanás quería hacerlo caer en tentación. Durante todos esos días no comió nada; y cuando pasó ese tiempo, tuvo hambre.3El diablo le dijo: ―Si eres el Hijo de Dios, dile a esta piedra que se convierta en pan.4Jesús le respondió: ―La Escritura dice: “No sólo de pan vivirá la gente”.5Entonces el diablo lo llevó a un lugar alto y desde allí le mostró en un momento todos los reinos del mundo.6El diablo le dijo: ―Te daré poder y autoridad sobre todos estos reinos y también te daré su grandeza, porque a mí me lo han dado y yo se lo doy a quien yo quiera.7Todo esto será tuyo si me adoras.8Jesús le contestó: ―La Escritura dice: “Adora al Señor tu Dios y sírvele sólo a él”.9Luego el diablo lo llevó a Jerusalén, a la parte más alta del templo, y le dijo: ―Si eres el Hijo de Dios, tírate desde aquí,10pues en la Escritura dice: “Dios enviará a sus ángeles para cuidarte.11Ellos te sostendrán en sus manos para que tu pie no tropiece con ninguna piedra”.12Jesús le respondió: ―También en la Escritura dice: “No pongas a prueba al Señor tu Dios”.13Después que el diablo trató por todos los medios de hacerlo caer en tentación, se alejó de él por un tiempo.
Rechazan a Jesús en Nazaret
14Jesús regresó a Galilea lleno del poder del Espíritu Santo, y adquirió fama por toda la región.15Enseñaba en las sinagogas y todos lo admiraban.16Cuando llegó a Nazaret, donde se había criado, un sábado fue a la sinagoga, como era su costumbre. Allí se levantó a leer,17y le dieron el libro del profeta Isaías. Lo abrió y encontró el lugar donde dice:18«El Espíritu del Señor está sobre mí, porque me ha ungido para dar buenas noticias a los pobres. Me ha enviado para anunciar libertad a los presos y dar vista a los ciegos, para poner en libertad a los oprimidos,19para anunciar el año en que el Señor nos dará su favor».20Luego cerró el libro, se lo devolvió al encargado y se sentó. Todos los que estaban en la sinagoga tenían los ojos puestos en él.21Entonces él comenzó a decirles: ―Esta Escritura acaba de cumplirse hoy delante de ustedes.22Todos se expresaban bien de él y estaban admirados por las hermosas palabras que él hablaba. Estaban intrigados y se preguntaban: ―¿No es este el hijo de José?23Jesús les dijo: ―Sin duda ustedes me dirán ese refrán: “Médico, cúrate a ti mismo. Haz aquí, en tu propia tierra, lo que hemos oído que hiciste en Capernaúm”.24Pero yo les aseguro que ningún profeta es bien recibido en su propia tierra.25En tiempos de Elías no llovió por tres años y medio y hubo mucha hambre en toda la tierra. En Israel vivían muchas viudas en esa época;26sin embargo, a Elías no lo enviaron a ninguna de ellas, sino a una viuda de Sarepta, cerca de la ciudad de Sidón.27Y en tiempos del profeta Eliseo había en Israel muchos enfermos de lepra, pero Eliseo no sanó a ninguno de ellos sino sanó a Naamán, que era de Siria.28Al oír esto, todos los que estaban en la sinagoga se pusieron furiosos,29se levantaron y lo echaron fuera del pueblo. Lo llevaron a lo alto de la colina sobre la que estaba construido el pueblo, para arrojarlo desde allí,30pero él pasó por en medio de ellos y se fue.
Jesús expulsa a un espíritu maligno
31Jesús se fue a Capernaúm, un pueblo de la región de Galilea, y enseñaba a la gente el día sábado.32Los que lo oían se sorprendían de sus enseñanzas, porque hablaba con autoridad.33En la sinagoga había un hombre que estaba poseído por un espíritu malo que le gritó con todas sus fuerzas:34―¡Por qué te metes con nosotros, Jesús de Nazaret? ¿Has venido a destruirnos? Yo sé quién eres tú. ¡El Santo de Dios!35Jesús le replicó: ―¡Cállate! ¡Sal de ese hombre! Entonces el demonio derribó al hombre en medio de la gente y salió de él sin hacerle ningún daño.36Todos estaban muy asustados y se decían unos a otros: ―¿Qué tienen sus palabras? Con autoridad y poder les ordena a los espíritus malos que salgan, y salen.37Y por todo aquel lugar se hablaba de Jesús.
Jesús sana a muchos enfermos
38Al salir Jesús de la sinagoga se fue a la casa de Simón. La suegra de este estaba enferma y con fiebre muy alta, y le pidieron a Jesús que hiciera algo por ella.39Él se inclinó sobre ella y ordenó que la fiebre se le quitara, y se le quitó. Ella en seguida se levantó y comenzó a servirles.40Al anochecer, la gente le llevó a Jesús todos los que tuvieran cualquier tipo de enfermedad. Él puso las manos sobre cada uno de ellos y los sanó.41También de muchas personas salían demonios que gritaban: «¡Tú eres el Hijo de Dios!». Pero él los reprendía y no los dejaba hablar, porque sabían que era el Cristo.42Al amanecer, Jesús salió y se fue a un lugar solitario. La gente lo buscó por todas partes y, cuando lo encontraron, trataron de detenerlo para que no se fuera.43Pero él les dijo: «Tengo que anunciar las buenas noticias del reino de Dios a los demás pueblos, porque para eso fui enviado».44Y continuó anunciando las buenas noticias en las sinagogas de los judíos.
1And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness (Mt 4:1; Mr 1:12; Lc 1:15; Lc 3:3; Lc 3:21; Lc 3:22; Lc 4:14; Lc 4:18; Jn 1:33; Jn 3:34; Hch 6:5; Hch 10:38)2for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. (Ap 13:2)7If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.”8And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’” (Dt 6:13; 1 S 7:3; Lc 4:4; Lc 4:12)9And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, (Mt 4:5; Lc 4:3)10for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’ (Sal 91:11)11and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” (Lc 4:10)12And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” (Dt 6:16; Is 7:12)13And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time. Jesus Begins His Ministry
14And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. (Mt 4:12; Lc 4:1; Lc 4:37; Hch 1:8)15And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. (Mt 4:23)
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
16And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. (Mt 13:54; Mr 6:1; Mr 6:2; Lc 2:39; Lc 2:51; Lc 4:31; Hch 13:15; Hch 13:27; Hch 15:21; Hch 17:2)17And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, (Lc 3:4; Hch 8:28)18“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, (Sal 146:7; Is 42:7; Is 58:6; Is 61:1; Mt 11:5; Lc 4:1; Lc 6:20; Jn 9:39; Hch 1:2; Hch 26:18)19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Lv 25:10; Is 49:8; 2 Co 6:2)20And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. (Mt 5:1; Mt 13:2; Mt 26:55; Lc 19:48; Jn 8:2; Hch 3:4)21And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” (Mt 1:22; Mr 12:10; Hch 8:35)22And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” (Sal 45:2; Mt 13:55; Lc 3:23; Jn 6:42)23And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘“Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’” (Mt 11:23; Mt 27:42; Mr 2:1; Lc 23:39; Jn 4:46)24And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. (Mt 13:57)25But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, (1 R 17:1; 1 R 18:1; Stg 5:17; Ap 11:6)26and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. (1 R 17:9)27And there were many lepers[1] in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” (2 R 5:1; 2 R 7:3)28When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath.29And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. (Nm 15:35; Hch 7:58)30But passing through their midst, he went away. (Jn 8:59; Jn 10:39)
Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Demon
31And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath, (Mt 4:13; Mt 4:23; Mr 1:21; Mr 6:2; Lc 4:15)32and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority. (Mt 7:28; Lc 4:36)33And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, (Lc 4:31)34“Ha![2] What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” (Mt 8:29; Lc 1:35; Jn 6:69; Hch 3:14; Hch 19:15; Heb 7:26; Stg 2:19; 1 Jn 2:20; Ap 3:7)35But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. (Mt 12:16; Lc 4:41)36And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” (Mt 8:27; Lc 4:32)37And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region. (Lc 4:14)
Jesus Heals Many
38And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. (Mt 8:14; Mr 1:29; 1 Co 9:5)39And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them. (Mt 8:26; Mt 17:18; Mr 4:39; Mr 9:25; Lc 8:24; Lc 9:42)40Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. (Mr 5:23)41And demons also came out of many, crying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ. (Mt 1:17; Mt 14:33; Mr 3:11; Lc 4:33; Hch 16:17)
Jesus Preaches in Synagogues
42And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, (Mr 1:35; Mr 1:36; Lc 5:16)43but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” (Mt 4:23; Mt 24:14; Lc 8:1; Lc 13:33; Lc 16:16; Hch 8:12)44And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.[3] (Mr 1:39)
