Liberación de Jeremías

1 Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, llevó a Jeremías a Ramá junto con todo el pueblo exiliado de Jerusalén y Judá que eran enviados a Babilonia, pero luego lo soltó. 2-3 El capitán llamó aparte a Jeremías y le dijo: ―El SEÑOR tu Dios ha traído este desastre sobre esta tierra tal como dijo que lo haría, porque este pueblo ha ofendido mucho al SEÑOR cometiendo tantas maldades, por eso ocurrió todo este mal. 4 Ahora voy a quitarte las cadenas y a dejarte ir. Si quieres venir conmigo a Babilonia, muy bien, yo me encargaré de que te atiendan bien. Pero si no deseas venir, quédate. Tienes la decisión; ve a donde quieras. 5 Si decides quedarte, vuelve adonde está Guedalías, que ha sido nombrado gobernador de Judá por el rey de Babilonia, y quédate con el resto del pueblo que él gobierna. Pero es cosa tuya; ve a donde quieras. Nabuzaradán le dio a Jeremías alimentos y dinero y lo dejó ir. 6 Jeremías volvió entonces a donde estaba Guedalías y vivió en Judá con el pueblo que se había quedado en el país.

Asesinato de Guedalías

7 Y cuando los jefes de los guerrilleros judíos que andaban por el campo oyeron que el rey de Babilonia había nombrado a Guedalías gobernador de los pobres de la tierra que se habían quedado, y no había exiliado a todos a Babilonia, 8 fueron a ver a Guedalías en Mizpa, donde tenía su cuartel general. Los jefes que acudieron fueron estos: Ismael, hijo de Netanías, Johanán y Jonatán, hijos de Carea, Seraías, hijo de Tanjumet, los hijos de Efay (el netofatita), Jezanías, hijo de un macateo, y sus hombres. 9 Y Guedalías les aseguró que rindiéndose a los babilonios estarían a salvo. ―Quédense aquí y sírvanle al rey de Babilonia —dijo—, y en todo les irá bien. 10 En lo que a mí respecta, me quedaré en Mizpa e intercederé por ustedes ante los babilonios que vendrán acá como supervisores de mi administración. Establézcanse en cualquier ciudad que deseen, y vivan del producto de la tierra. Cosechen las uvas, los frutos de verano, las aceitunas, y almacénenlos. 11 Cuando los judíos que estaban en Moab, entre los amonitas, en Edom y en otras tierras vecinas, oyeron que unos cuantos del pueblo estaban aún en Judá, y que el rey de Babilonia no se los había llevado a todos, y que aquel Guedalías era el gobernador, 12 comenzaron a volver a Judá desde los muchos lugares a donde habían huido. Se detuvieron en Mizpa para exponer sus planes a Guedalías y luego se fueron a las haciendas desiertas y recogieron una gran cosecha de uvas para vino, y otros productos. 13-14 Pero poco después Johanán, hijo de Carea, y los demás jefes guerrilleros fueron a Mizpa para advertirle a Guedalías que Balís, el rey de los amonitas, había enviado a Ismael, hijo de Netanías, para asesinarlo. Pero Guedalías no quiso creerles. 15 Entonces Johanán tuvo una conferencia privada con Guedalías, en la que Johanán se ofreció para matar a Ismael en secreto. ―¿Por qué habríamos de permitirle que venga a asesinarte? —preguntó Johanán—. ¿Qué les ocurrirá a los judíos que se han quedado si tú mueres? ¡Seguro serían esparcidos y se perdería este remanente del pueblo que aun queda! 16 Pero Guedalías dijo: ―Les prohíbo hacer tal cosa, pues lo que dicen de Ismael es mentira.

Jeremiah Remains in Judah

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he took him bound in chains along with all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah who were being exiled to Babylon. (Jos 18:25; Sal 149:8; Jer 39:14) 2 The captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said to him, “The Lord your God pronounced this disaster against this place. (Dt 29:24; Dt 29:28) 3 The Lord has brought it about, and has done as he said. Because you sinned against the Lord and did not obey his voice, this thing has come upon you. (Dt 29:25; Jer 44:3; Jer 44:23; Dn 9:10)

4 Now, behold, I release you today from the chains on your hands. If it seems good to you to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will look after you well, but if it seems wrong to you to come with me to Babylon, do not come. See, the whole land is before you; go wherever you think it good and right to go. (Gn 20:15; Jer 39:12; Jer 40:1) 5 If you remain,^[1] then return to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon appointed governor of the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people. Or go wherever you think it right to go.” So the captain of the guard gave him an allowance of food and a present, and let him go. 7 When all the captains of the forces in the open country and their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land and had committed to him men, women, and children, those of the poorest of the land who had not been taken into exile to Babylon, (2 R 25:12; 2 R 25:23; Jer 39:10; Jer 40:5)

8 they went to Gedaliah at Mizpah—Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, Johanan the son of Kareah, Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men. (Jer 40:6; Jer 40:13; Jer 40:14; Jer 40:15; Jer 40:16; Jer 41:1; Jer 42:1; Jer 42:8)

9 Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, swore to them and their men, saying, “Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Dwell in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you. (Jer 38:20) 10 As for me, I will dwell at Mizpah, to represent you before the Chaldeans who will come to us. But as for you, gather wine and summer fruits and oil, and store them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that you have taken.” (Jer 40:6; Jer 40:12) 11 Likewise, when all the Judeans who were in Moab and among the Ammonites and in Edom and in other lands heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, as governor over them, (Gn 36:8; Nm 22:1; 1 S 11:1; 1 S 12:12; 2 S 8:2)

12 then all the Judeans returned from all the places to which they had been driven and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah. And they gathered wine and summer fruits in great abundance. (Jer 40:10; Jer 43:5) 13 Now Johanan the son of Kareah and all the leaders of the forces in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah (Jer 40:8; Jer 40:15; Jer 41:11; Jer 42:1; Jer 42:8)

14 and said to him, “Do you know that Baalis the king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam would not believe them. (Jer 41:10) 15 Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke secretly to Gedaliah at Mizpah, “Please let me go and strike down Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no one will know it. Why should he take your life, so that all the Judeans who are gathered about you would be scattered, and the remnant of Judah would perish?” (Jer 42:2) 16 But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, “You shall not do this thing, for you are speaking falsely of Ishmael.”
