La caída de Jerusalén

1 Fue en enero del noveno año del reinado del rey Sedequías de Judá que el rey Nabucodonosor y su ejército volvieron a atacar a Jerusalén y la sitiaron. 2 Dos años después, en el mes de julio, abrieron una brecha en la muralla, por la cual entraron y la ciudad cayó rendida. 3 Todos los oficiales del ejército babilónico entraron y, triunfantes, se sentaron delante de la puerta principal de la ciudad. Nergal Sarézer estaba allí, con Samgar, Nebo Sarsequín y Nergal Sarézer, el hombre de confianza del rey, y muchos otros. 4 Cuando el rey Sedequías y sus soldados se dieron cuenta de que la ciudad estaba perdida, huyeron de noche por la puerta que hay entre las dos murallas detrás del jardín del palacio, atravesando los campos hacia el valle del Jordán. 5 Pero los babilonios persiguieron al rey, lo capturaron en los llanos de Jericó y se lo llevaron a Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, que estaba en Riblá, en tierra de Jamat, en donde lo sentenció. 6 El rey de Babilonia obligó a Sedequías a presenciar cómo mataban a sus hijos y a todos los nobles de Judá. 7 Luego le sacó los ojos a Sedequías y lo envió encadenado como esclavo a Babilonia. 8 Mientras tanto el ejército incendió a Jerusalén, inclusive el palacio, y derribó las murallas de la ciudad. 9 Entonces Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, y sus hombres enviaron a Babilonia al resto de la población de Jerusalén y a los que se habían pasado de su lado. 10 Pero por toda la tierra de Judá dejó unos cuantos, de entre los más pobres, y les dio tierras y viñedos. 11-12 Mientras tanto el rey Nabucodonosor le había ordenado a Nabuzaradán que buscara a Jeremías. ―Encárgate de que no sufra ningún daño, le dijo. Cuídalo bien y dale cuanto quiera. 13 Así es que Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, Nabusazbán, jefe de los eunucos, Nergal Sarézer, consejero del rey, y todos los oficiales tomaron medidas para cumplir lo que el rey había ordenado. 14 Enviaron soldados a que sacaran a Jeremías de la cárcel y lo pusieron al cuidado de Guedalías, hijo de Ajicán, hijo de Safán, para que lo llevara de regreso a su casa. Y Jeremías vivió allí entre la gente de su pueblo que había quedado en el país. 15 El SEÑOR dio el siguiente mensaje a Jeremías antes de la llegada de los babilonios, mientras aún estaba en la cárcel: 16 Mándale decir a Ebedmélec el etíope: El SEÑOR de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel, dice: Cumpliré todas mis amenazas contra esta ciudad; la destruiré ante tus ojos, 17 pero a ti te libraré, no serás muerto por aquellos a quienes tanto temes. 18 Como recompensa por confiar en mí, yo preservaré tu vida y te guardaré a salvo.

The Fall of Jerusalem

1 In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem and besieged it. (2 R 25:1; Jer 52:4) 2 In the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, a breach was made in the city. 3 Then all the officials of the king of Babylon came and sat in the middle gate: Nergal-sar-ezer of Samgar, Nebu-sar-sekim the Rab-saris, Nergal-sar-ezer the Rab-mag, with all the rest of the officers of the king of Babylon. 4 When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled, going out of the city at night by way of the king’s garden through the gate between the two walls; and they went toward the Arabah. (Dt 1:1) 5 But the army of the Chaldeans pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. And when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, at Riblah, in the land of Hamath; and he passed sentence on him. (Jos 5:10; 2 R 23:33; Ez 17:15) 6 The king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah at Riblah before his eyes, and the king of Babylon slaughtered all the nobles of Judah. (Jer 39:5; Jer 52:10) 7 He put out the eyes of Zedekiah and bound him in chains to take him to Babylon. 9 Then Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, carried into exile to Babylon the rest of the people who were left in the city, those who had deserted to him, and the people who remained. (Gn 37:36; 2 R 25:8; Jer 37:13; Jer 40:1; Jer 52:12)

10 Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, left in the land of Judah some of the poor people who owned nothing, and gave them vineyards and fields at the same time. (2 R 25:12; Jer 40:7)

The Lord Delivers Jeremiah

11 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon gave command concerning Jeremiah through Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, saying, 12 “Take him, look after him well, and do him no harm, but deal with him as he tells you.” (Jer 40:4) 13 So Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, Nebushazban the Rab-saris, Nergal-sar-ezer the Rab-mag, and all the chief officers of the king of Babylon (Jer 39:3) 14 sent and took Jeremiah from the court of the guard. They entrusted him to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, that he should take him home. So he lived among the people. 15 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah while he was shut up in the court of the guard: (Jer 36:5; Jer 38:13) 16 “Go, and say to Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will fulfill my words against this city for harm and not for good, and they shall be accomplished before you on that day.
