1Escucha el mensaje del SEÑOR, Israel:2-3No hagan como la gente que traza horóscopos y procura leer su destino y futuro en las estrellas. No los asusten predicciones como las de ellos, pues no son más que un cúmulo de mentiras. Necios y sin sentido son sus procedimientos. Derriban un árbol, un artesano labra un ídolo,4lo adornan con oro y plata, y luego con clavos y martillo lo colocan firme en su sitio para que no se caiga,5y allí permanece el dios de ellos como espantapájaros en un huerto. No sabe hablar, y hay que transportarlo pues no puede andar. No teman a un dios así, pues no puede ni perjudicar ni ayudar.6¡Oh SEÑOR, no hay otro Dios como tú! Porque grande eres, y poderoso y de gran fama tu nombre.7¿Quién no habrá de temerte, oh Rey de las naciones? ¡Y sólo a ti corresponde ese título! Entre todos los sabios de la tierra y entre todos los reinos del mundo no hay nadie como tú.8Los hombres más sabios, pero que adoran ídolos, en realidad son tontos e insensatos.9Traen de Tarsis plata laminada y de Ufaz traen oro, lo dan a hábiles orfebres que les hacen sus ídolos, luego visten esos ídolos de mantos de púrpura real, obra de expertos sastres. ¡Los ídolos sólo son productos hechos por artesanos!10¡Pero el SEÑOR es el único Dios verdadero, el Dios que está vivo y da vida, el Rey siempre poderoso! ¡Es tan poderoso que toda la tierra tiembla cuando él se enoja, el mundo prefiere esconderse cuando sabe que está enojado!11Háblenles así ustedes a los que adoran otros ídolos: ¡Sus falsos dioses, que no hicieron los cielos ni la tierra, van a parar en nada!12Fue nuestro Dios quien formó la tierra por medio de su poder e inteligencia, quien con suma sabiduría colgó las estrellas en el espacio y extendió los cielos.13Es su voz la que retumba en el trueno de las nubes tormentosas. Él hace que de la tierra se levante la niebla, envía el relámpago y produce la lluvia, y de sus tesoros saca el viento.14Realmente es sorprendente la estupidez de la gente que no tiene conocimiento de Dios, quienes se inclinan ante sus propios ídolos fabricados. Están entregados a algo vergonzoso, pues lo que hacen son falsificaciones, dioses sin vida ni poder.15Nada valen, son necedad; serán aplastados junto con sus fabricantes.16¡Qué diferente es el Dios de Jacob, él es el Creador de todo, e Israel es su nación elegida. SEÑOR de los ejércitos es su nombre.
Destrucción inminente
17Alisten el equipaje, dice, prepárense para partir, pronto comenzará el asedio.18Porque súbitamente los arrojaré de esta tierra y permitiré que les acontezcan grandes desgracias; por fin probarán mi cólera.19¡Ay, que terrible es mi herida, como me duele, mi enfermedad es incurable! Y yo que pensaba que sólo era un malestar pasajero.20Ay, desapareció mi hogar, se han llevado a mis hijos e hijas y jamás volveré a verlos! ¡Mi casa ha sido completamente desmantelada! No ha quedado nadie que pueda ayudarme a reconstruir mi casa.21Los pastores de mi pueblo se han vuelto necios, ya no se preocupan de seguir las instrucciones de Dios ni buscan conocer su voluntad. Por eso mueren y sus rebaños son esparcidos.22¡Oigan, escuchen el terrible escándalo que producen los ejércitos que vienen desde el norte! Las ciudades de Judá quedarán convertidas en guaridas de chacales.
Oración de Jeremías
23¡Oh SEÑOR, yo sé que no está en manos del ser humano trazar el plan de su vida y ponerle rumbo!24Yo sé que por eso me corriges, SEÑOR, pero hazlo con suavidad, te lo ruego. No me corrijas con brusquedad, pues moriría.25Deja caer tu cólera sobre las naciones que no te obedecen, pues han causado tanto daño a Israel que lo han dejado convertido en triste páramo.
1Hear the word that the Lord speaks to you, O house of Israel.2Thus says the Lord: “Learn not the way of the nations, nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them,3for the customs of the peoples are vanity.[1] A tree from the forest is cut down and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman. (Is 40:20; Is 44:9; Is 45:20)4They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move.
