1 Nabot, un hombre de Jezrel, tenía un viñedo en las afueras de la ciudad, junto al palacio del rey Acab. 2 Un día el rey le habló y le pidió que le vendiera su propiedad. ―Quiero plantar en ella una huerta —explicó el rey—, porque está junto al palacio. Yo te puedo dar un mejor terreno en el cual puedes tener otro viñedo, o si quieres te daré el dinero que me pidas. 3 Pero Nabot respondió: ―Eso jamás sucederá, pues el SEÑOR me prohíbe venderle la propiedad que ha pertenecido a mi familia durante generaciones. 4 Entonces Acab, enojado y deprimido, regresó al palacio. Se negó a comer, y se acostó vuelto hacia a la pared. 5 ―¿Qué es lo que te pasa? —le preguntó su esposa Jezabel—. ¿Por qué no comes? ¿Por qué estás tan deprimido y enojado? 6 ―Le pedí a Nabot que me vendiera su viñedo o que lo cambiara por otro, y él se negó —le respondió Acab. 7 ―¿Acaso no eres tú el rey de Israel? —le preguntó Jezabel—. Levántate y come, y no te preocupes más acerca de ello. Yo te daré ese viñedo de Nabot. 8 Entonces escribió una carta en nombre de Acab, le puso el sello y la envió a los dirigentes de Jezrel, la ciudad en que vivía Nabot. 9 En la carta les decía: «Convoquen a todos los ciudadanos para que se reúnan a ayunar y orar. También citen a Nabot, 10 y busquen a dos personas que lo acusen de haber blasfemado contra Dios y de haber maldecido al rey. Luego sáquenlo y mátenlo a pedradas». 11 Los ancianos de la ciudad siguieron las instrucciones que Jezabel les había dado en su carta. 12 Convocaron a un ayuno, y sentaron a Nabot delante del pueblo. 13 Entonces dos hombres sin conciencia lo acusaron de haber maldecido a Dios y al rey. Entonces Nabot fue arrastrado a las afueras de la ciudad, donde lo apedrearon hasta darle muerte. 14 Luego avisaron a Jezabel que Nabot había muerto. 15 Cuando Jezabel supo la noticia, le dijo a Acab: «Nabot no quiso venderte su viñedo por dinero. Bien, ahora puedes tenerlo sin pagar nada, pues él ha muerto». 16 Entonces Acab fue al viñedo, para tomar posesión de él. 17 Pero el SEÑOR le dijo a Elías: 18 «Ve a Samaria, y visita al rey Acab, rey de Israel. Ahora se encuentra en el viñedo de Nabot, pues ha ido a apoderarse de él. 19 Dale este mensaje de mi parte: “¿No te ha sido suficiente matar a Nabot? ¿Debes robarle también? Debido a esto los perros lamerán tu sangre en las afueras de la ciudad, de la misma manera que ellos lamieron la sangre de Nabot”». 20 ―¡Me has encontrado, enemigo mío! —exclamó Acab cuando vio a Elías. ―Sí —respondió Elías—, he venido, porque no haces otra cosa que ofender al SEÑOR, pues solo sabes hacer lo malo. 21 Por eso el SEÑOR va a traerte una gran desgracia, y te va a eliminar. No permitirá que ninguno de tus descendientes varones, esclavo o libre, sobreviva. 22 Va a destruir a tu familia, tal como lo hizo con la familia de Jeroboán y con la familia del rey Basá, porque tú has provocado su ira y has hecho que todo Israel caiga en pecado. 23 El SEÑOR también me ha dicho que los perros se comerán el cuerpo de Jezabel, tu esposa, en los campos de Jezrel. 24 Los miembros de tu familia que mueran en la ciudad serán comidos por los perros, y a los que mueran en el campo, se los comerán los buitres. 25 Nadie se entregó de tal manera a hacer el mal como Acab, porque Jezabel, su esposa, lo incitaba a que cometiera toda suerte de perversidades. 26 Especialmente se dedicó a la adoración de ídolos, tal como lo hacían los amorreos, pueblo al cual el SEÑOR había expulsado de la tierra, para darle el lugar al pueblo de Israel. 27 Cuando Acab oyó estas profecías, se vistió con ropa áspera y ayunó. No se quitaba esa ropa para dormir, y andaba deprimido. 28 Entonces Elías el tisbita recibió otro mensaje de parte del SEÑOR, en el que le decía: 29 «¿Ves cómo se ha humillado Acab delante de mí? Por cuanto él ha hecho esto, no haré lo que anuncié durante su vida. Pero enviaré la desgracia a su familia durante el reinado de su hijo».

1 Now Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard in Jezreel, beside the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. (1 R 18:45) 2 And after this Ahab said to Naboth, “Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a vegetable garden, because it is near my house, and I will give you a better vineyard for it; or, if it seems good to you, I will give you its value in money.” (1 S 8:14) 3 But Naboth said to Ahab, “The Lord forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers.” (Lv 25:23; Nm 36:7; Ez 46:18) 4 And Ahab went into his house vexed and sullen because of what Naboth the Jezreelite had said to him, for he had said, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” And he lay down on his bed and turned away his face and would eat no food. (1 R 20:43) 5 But Jezebel his wife came to him and said to him, “Why is your spirit so vexed that you eat no food?” 6 And he said to her, “Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite and said to him, ‘Give me your vineyard for money, or else, if it please you, I will give you another vineyard for it.’ And he answered, ‘I will not give you my vineyard.’” 7 And Jezebel his wife said to him, “Do you now govern Israel? Arise and eat bread and let your heart be cheerful; I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.” 8 So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name and sealed them with his seal, and she sent the letters to the elders and the leaders who lived with Naboth in his city. (Rt 4:2; 1 R 20:7; Est 3:12) 9 And she wrote in the letters, “Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth at the head of the people. 10 And set two worthless men opposite him, and let them bring a charge against him, saying, ‘You have cursed[1] God and the king.’ Then take him out and stone him to death.” (Ex 22:28; Lv 24:16; Dt 13:13; Hch 6:11; Hch 23:5) 11 And the men of his city, the elders and the leaders who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent word to them. As it was written in the letters that she had sent to them, (1 R 21:8) 12 they proclaimed a fast and set Naboth at the head of the people. (Is 58:4) 13 And the two worthless men came in and sat opposite him. And the worthless men brought a charge against Naboth in the presence of the people, saying, “Naboth cursed God and the king.” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death with stones. 14 Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, “Naboth has been stoned; he is dead.” 15 As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, Jezebel said to Ahab, “Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money, for Naboth is not alive, but dead.” 16 And as soon as Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, Ahab arose to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it. 17 Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, (Sal 9:12) 18 “Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who is in Samaria; behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, where he has gone to take possession. (1 R 16:24) 19 And you shall say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Have you killed and also taken possession?”’ And you shall say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: “In the place where dogs licked up the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick your own blood.”’” (1 R 22:38; 2 R 9:26) 20 Ahab said to Elijah, “Have you found me, O my enemy?” He answered, “I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do what is evil in the sight of the Lord. (1 R 18:17; 1 R 21:25; 2 R 17:17; Ro 7:14) 21 Behold, I will bring disaster upon you. I will utterly burn you up, and will cut off from Ahab every male, bond or free, in Israel. (1 R 14:10; 2 R 9:8) 22 And I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the anger to which you have provoked me, and because you have made Israel to sin. (1 R 14:16; 1 R 15:29; 1 R 16:3; 1 R 16:11) 23 And of Jezebel the Lord also said, ‘The dogs shall eat Jezebel within the walls of Jezreel.’ (2 S 20:15; 2 R 9:36) 24 Anyone belonging to Ahab who dies in the city the dogs shall eat, and anyone of his who dies in the open country the birds of the heavens shall eat.” (1 R 14:11; 1 R 16:4) 25 (There was none who sold himself to do what was evil in the sight of the Lord like Ahab, whom Jezebel his wife incited. (1 R 16:30) 26 He acted very abominably in going after idols, as the Amorites had done, whom the Lord cast out before the people of Israel.) (Gn 15:16; 1 R 15:12; 2 R 17:12; 2 R 21:11) 27 And when Ahab heard those words, he tore his clothes and put sackcloth on his flesh and fasted and lay in sackcloth and went about dejectedly. (2 S 3:31; 2 S 12:16; 2 R 6:30) 28 And the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 29 “Have you seen how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself before me, I will not bring the disaster in his days; but in his son’s days I will bring the disaster upon his house.” (2 R 9:25)
