1 Werde wach, werde wach, kleide dich in deine Kraft^[1], Zion! Lege deine Prachtgewänder an, Jerusalem, du heilige Stadt! Denn hinfort wird kein Unbeschnittener und kein Unreiner in dich eintreten! 2 Schüttle den Staub von dir ab, stehe auf, du Gefangenenschar Jerusalems! Entledige dich deiner Halsfesseln, du Gefangenenschar Tochter Zion^[2]! 3 Denn so hat der HERR gesprochen: »Ohne Entgelt seid ihr verkauft worden; so sollt ihr auch ohne Geld losgekauft werden!« 4 Denn so hat Gott der HERR gesprochen: »Nach Ägypten ist mein Volk im Anfang hinabgezogen, um dort in der Fremde zu weilen; dann haben die Assyrer es ohne Grund^[3] vergewaltigt. 5 Nun aber, was geschieht mir denn hier« – so lautet der Ausspruch des HERRN –, »daß mein Volk mir ohne Entgelt weggenommen^[4] worden ist, daß seine Zwingherren laut jauchzen« – so lautet der Ausspruch des HERRN – »und mein Name immerfort, tagaus tagein, gelästert wird? 6 Darum soll mein Volk meinen Namen kennenlernen, ja, darum an jenem Tage erkennen, daß ich es bin, der da spricht: ›Hier bin ich!‹« 7 Wie lieblich^[5] sind auf den Bergen die Füße^[6] des Freudenboten, der Glück verkündet, der Gutes als frohe Botschaft verkündet und Heil zu melden hat, der zu Zion sagt: »Dein Gott hat sein Königtum angetreten!« 8 Horch! Deine Wächter lassen schon ihren Ruf erschallen und jubeln allesamt; denn Auge in Auge sehen sie voll Freude, wie der HERR nach Zion zurückkehrt. 9 Brecht in lauten Jubel aus insgesamt, ihr Trümmer (-stätten) Jerusalems! Denn der HERR tröstet sein Volk, hat Jerusalem erlöst! 10 Der HERR hat seinen heiligen Arm vor den Augen aller Völker entblößt, und alle Enden der Erde werden das von unserm Gott ausgehende Heil^[7] sehen. 11 Brecht auf, brecht auf, zieht aus von dort, rührt nichts Unreines an! Zieht weg aus ihrer^[8] Mitte! Reinigt euch, die ihr die Geräte des HERRN tragt! 12 Denn nicht in ängstlicher Hast braucht ihr auszuziehen und nicht in eiliger Flucht zu wandern; denn der HERR zieht vor euch her, und die Nachhut eures Zuges bildet der Gott Israels. 13 Wisset wohl: mein Knecht wird Erfolg haben; er wird emporsteigen und erhöht werden und hocherhaben dastehen. 14 Wie sich viele über dich entsetzt haben – so entstellt, nicht mehr einem Manne ähnlich war sein Aussehen und seine Gestalt nicht mehr wie die der Menschenkinder –, 15 ebenso wird er viele Völker in Erstaunen versetzen, und Könige werden über ihn^[9] den Mund verschließen^[10]; denn was ihnen nie erzählt worden war, das sehen sie (nun), und wovon sie nie etwas gehört hatten, das nehmen sie (nun) wahr.

1 Wake up! Zion, wake up! Dress yourself with strength as if it were your clothes. Holy city of Jerusalem, put on your clothes of glory. Those who haven’t been circumcised will never enter you again. Neither will those who are ‘unclean’. 2 Get up, Jerusalem! Shake off your dust. Take your place on your throne. Captured people of Zion, remove the chains from your neck. 3 The LORD says, ‘When you were sold as slaves, no one paid anything for you. Now no one will pay any money to set you free.’ 4 The LORD and King continues, ‘Long ago my people went down to Egypt. They lived there for a while. Later, Assyria crushed them without any reason. 5 ‘Now look at what has happened to them,’ announces the LORD. ‘Once again my people have been taken away. And no one paid anything for them. Those who rule over them boast about it,’ announces the LORD. ‘All day long without stopping, people speak evil things against my name. 6 So the day will come when my people will really know the meaning of my name. They will know what kind of God I am. They will know that I told them in advance they would return to their land. They will know that it was I.’ 7 What a beautiful sight it is to see messengers coming with good news! How beautiful to see them coming down from the mountains with a message about peace! How wonderful it is when they bring the good news that we are saved! How wonderful when they say to Zion, ‘Your God rules!’ 8 Listen! Those on guard duty are shouting out the message. With their own eyes they see the LORD returning to Zion. So they shout for joy. 9 Burst into songs of joy together, you broken-down buildings in Jerusalem. The LORD has comforted his people. He has set Jerusalem free. 10 The LORD will use the power of his holy arm to save his people. All the nations will see him do it. Everyone from one end of the earth to the other will see it. 11 You who carry the objects that belong to the LORD’s temple, leave Babylon! Leave it! Get out of there! Don’t touch anything that isn’t pure and ‘clean’. Come out of Babylon and be pure. 12 But this time you won’t have to leave in a hurry. You won’t have to rush away. The LORD will go ahead of you and lead you. The God of Israel will follow behind you and guard you.

The suffering and glory of the Lord’s servant

13 The LORD says, ‘My servant will act wisely and accomplish his task. He will be highly honoured. He will be greatly respected. 14 Many people were shocked when they saw him. He was so scarred that he no longer looked like a person. His body was so twisted that he did not look like a human being anymore. 15 But many nations will be surprised when they see what he has done. Kings will be so amazed that they will not be able to say anything. They will understand things they were never told. They will know the meaning of things they never heard.’
