1 Ich, Jakobus, ein Knecht Gottes und des Herrn Jesus Christus, sende den zwölf in der Zerstreuung (unter den Heiden) lebenden Stämmen meinen Gruß. 2 Erachtet es für lauter Freude, meine Brüder, wenn ihr in mancherlei Versuchungen^[1] geratet; 3 ihr erkennt ja, daß die Bewährung eures Glaubens standhaftes Ausharren^[2] bewirkt. 4 Das standhafte Ausharren muß aber zu voller Betätigung führen, damit ihr vollkommen und tadellos seid und sich in keiner Beziehung ein Mangel an euch zeigt. 5 Sollte aber jemand von euch Mangel an Weisheit haben, so erbitte er sie sich von Gott, der allen ohne weiteres und ohne laute Vorwürfe^[3] gibt: dann wird sie ihm zuteil werden. 6 Nur bitte er im Glauben^[4], ohne irgendeinen Zweifel zu hegen; denn wer da zweifelt, der gleicht einer vom Wind getriebenen und hin und her geworfenen Meereswoge. 7 Ein solcher Mensch darf nicht erwarten, daß er etwas vom Herrn empfangen werde, 8 er, ein Mann mit zwei Seelen^[5], unbeständig auf allen seinen Wegen^[6]. 9 Es rühme sich aber der niedrig stehende Bruder seiner Höhe^[7], 10 der reiche dagegen seiner Niedrigkeit^[8], weil er wie die Blumen des Grases vergehen wird. 11 Denn die Sonne geht mit ihrer Glut auf und versengt das Gras; dann fallen seine Blumen ab, und seine ganze Schönheit ist dahin (Jes 40,6-7): so wird auch der Reiche in seinen Wegen^[9] verwelken. – 12 Selig ist der Mann, der die Versuchung (V.2) standhaft erträgt! Denn nachdem er sich bewährt hat, wird er das Leben als Siegeskranz empfangen, den er^[10] denen verheißen hat, die ihn lieben. 13 Niemand sage^[11], wenn er (zum Bösen) versucht wird: »Von Gott werde ich versucht«; denn Gott kann nicht vom Bösen^[12] versucht werden, versucht aber auch seinerseits niemand. 14 Nein, ein jeder wird (zum Bösen) versucht, indem er von seiner eigenen Lust^[13] gereizt und gelockt wird. 15 Sodann, wenn die Lust empfangen hat^[14], gebiert sie Sünde; die Sünde aber gebiert, wenn sie zur Vollendung gekommen ist, den Tod. – 16 Irret euch nicht, meine geliebten Brüder: 17 lauter gute Gabe und lauter vollkommenes Geschenk kommt von oben herab, vom Vater der Himmelslichter, bei dem keine Veränderung und keine zeitweilige Verdunkelung stattfindet. 18 Aus freiem Liebeswillen hat er uns durch das Wort der Wahrheit ins Dasein gerufen^[15], damit wir gewissermaßen die Erstlingsfrucht unter seinen Geschöpfen wären. 19 Wisset^[16], meine geliebten Brüder: es sei [aber] jeder Mensch schnell (bereit) zum Hören, langsam zum Reden und langsam zum Zorn; 20 denn der Zorn des Menschen tut nichts, was vor Gott recht ist. 21 Darum legt alle Unsauberkeit^[17] und den letzten Rest der Bosheit ab, und nehmt mit Sanftmut das euch eingepflanzte Wort an, das eure Seelen zu retten vermag. 22 Seid aber Täter des Wortes und nicht bloß Hörer, sonst betrügt ihr euch selbst. 23 Denn wer nur ein Hörer des Wortes ist, aber kein Täter, der gleicht einem Menschen, der sein leibliches Gesicht im Spiegel beschaut; 24 denn nachdem er sich beschaut hat und weggegangen ist, vergißt er alsbald, wie er ausgesehen hat. 25 Wer dagegen in das vollkommene Gesetz der Freiheit hineingeschaut hat und bei ihm verbleibt, indem er nicht ein vergeßlicher Hörer, sondern ein wirklicher Täter^[18] ist, der wird in seinem Tun selig sein. 26 Wenn jemand Gott zu dienen meint und dabei seine Zunge nicht im Zaume hält, vielmehr sein Herz^[19] betrügt, dessen Gottesdienst^[20] ist nichtig. 27 Ein reiner und fleckenloser Gottesdienst vor Gott dem Vater besteht darin, daß man Waisen und Witwen in ihrer Trübsal besucht und sich selbst von der Welt unbefleckt erhält.

1 I, James, am writing this letter. I serve God and the Lord Jesus Christ. I am sending this letter to you, the 12 tribes scattered among the nations. Greetings.

Facing all kinds of trouble

2 My brothers and sisters, you will face all kinds of trouble. When you do, think of it as pure joy. 3 Your faith will be tested. You know that when this happens it will produce in you the strength to continue. 4 And you must allow this strength to finish its work. Then you will be all you should be. You will have everything you need. 5 If any of you needs wisdom, you should ask God for it. He will give it to you. God gives freely to everyone and doesn’t find fault. 6 But when you ask, you must believe. You must not doubt. That’s because a person who doubts is like a wave of the sea. The wind blows and tosses them around. 7 They shouldn’t expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 This kind of person can’t make up their mind. They can never decide what to do. 9 Here’s what believers who are in low positions in life should be proud of. They should be proud that God has given them a high position in the kingdom. 10 But rich people should take pride in their low positions. That’s because they will fade away like wild flowers. 11 The sun rises. Its burning heat dries up the plants. Their blossoms fall. Their beauty is destroyed. In the same way, rich people will fade away. They fade away even as they go about their business. 12 Blessed is the person who keeps on going when times are hard. After they have come through hard times, this person will receive a crown. The crown is life itself. The Lord has promised it to those who love him. 13 When a person is tempted, they shouldn’t say, ‘God is tempting me.’ God can’t be tempted by evil. And he doesn’t tempt anyone. 14 But each person is tempted by their own evil desires. These desires lead them on and drag them away. 15 When these desires are allowed to remain, they lead to sin. And when sin is allowed to remain and grow, it leads to death. 16 My dear brothers and sisters, don’t let anyone fool you. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from God. This kind of gift comes down from the Father who created the heavenly lights. These lights create shadows that move. But the Father does not change like these shadows. 18 God chose to give us new birth through the message of truth. He wanted us to be the first harvest of his new creation.

Listen to the word and do what it says

19 My dear brothers and sisters, pay attention to what I say. Everyone should be quick to listen. But they should be slow to speak. They should be slow to get angry. 20 Human anger doesn’t produce the holy life God wants. 21 So get rid of everything that is sinful. Get rid of the evil that is all around us. Don’t be too proud to accept the word that is planted in you. It can save you. 22 Don’t just listen to the word. You fool yourselves if you do that. You must do what it says. 23 Suppose someone listens to the word but doesn’t do what it says. Then they are like a person who looks at their face in a mirror. 24 After looking at themselves, they leave. And right away they forget what they look like. 25 But suppose someone takes a good look at the perfect law that gives freedom. And they keep looking at it. Suppose they don’t forget what they’ve heard, but they do what the law says. Then this person will be blessed in what they do. 26 Suppose people think their beliefs and how they live are both right. But they don’t control what they say. Then they are fooling themselves. Their beliefs and way of life are not worth anything at all. 27 Here are the beliefs and way of life that God our Father accepts as pure and without fault. When widows are in trouble, take care of them. Do the same for children who have no parents. And don’t let the world make you impure.
