III. Schlußerzählungen von der Wirksamkeit Josuas (Kap. 22-24)
1Damals berief Josua die Stämme Ruben, Gad und halb Manasse2und sagte zu ihnen: »Ihr habt alles erfüllt, was euch Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, geboten hat, und habt euch auch mir gegenüber in allem, was ich euch befohlen habe, gehorsam bewiesen:3ihr habt eure Volksgenossen diese lange Zeit hindurch bis auf den heutigen Tag nicht im Stich gelassen und das Gebot des HERRN, eures Gottes, treu erfüllt.4Da nun aber der HERR, euer Gott, euren Volksgenossen Ruhe[1] verschafft hat, wie er ihnen verheißen hatte, so kehrt jetzt zu euren Zelten[2] zurück, in das euch gehörige Land, das euch Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, jenseits des Jordans zugewiesen hat.5Nur seid auf die genaue Beobachtung des Gesetzes und der Gebote bedacht, die euch Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, zur Pflicht gemacht hat, daß ihr den HERRN, euren Gott, liebt und allezeit auf seinen Wegen wandelt, seine Gebote beobachtet und ihm treu bleibt und ihm von ganzem Herzen und mit ganzer Seele dient!«6Als Josua sie dann mit Segenswünschen verabschiedet hatte, kehrten sie zu ihren Zelten zurück.7Der einen Hälfte des Stammes Manasse aber hatte Mose in Basan Landbesitz gegeben; der andern Hälfte dagegen hatte Josua bei ihren Volksgenossen im Westjordanlande ihren Erbbesitz angewiesen. Als Josua sie nun in ihre Heimat entließ, segnete er auch sie8und sagte zu ihnen: »Kehrt zu euren Zelten zurück mit vielen Schätzen und mit einem sehr großen Viehbesitz, mit Silber und Gold, mit Kupfer, Eisen und Kleidern in großer Menge. Teilt das, was ihr von euren Feinden erbeutet habt, mit euren Brüdern[3]!«9So kehrten denn die Stämme Ruben, Gad und halb Manasse zurück und verließen die übrigen Israeliten in Silo, das im Lande Kanaan liegt, um in das ihnen gehörige Land Gilead heimzuziehen, wo sie sich nach dem durch Mose verkündigten Befehl des HERRN ansässig gemacht hatten.10Als sie nun an die Steinkreise am Jordan gekommen waren, die noch im Lande Kanaan liegen, da bauten die Stämme Ruben, Gad und halb Manasse dort einen Altar am Jordan, einen großen, weithin sichtbaren Altar.11Als aber die (übrigen) Israeliten die Kunde erhielten: »Die Stämme Ruben, Gad und halb Manasse haben den Altar gerade dem Lande Kanaan gegenüber bei den Steinkreisen am Jordan, auf der anderen Seite des Gebietes der Israeliten, gebaut« –12als die Israeliten das erfuhren, da versammelte sich die ganze Gemeinde der Israeliten in Silo, um gegen sie zu Felde zu ziehen.13Da sandten die Israeliten an die Stämme Ruben, Gad und halb Manasse in das Land Gilead Pinehas, den Sohn des Priesters Eleasar,14und zehn Fürsten mit ihm, je einen Fürsten von jedem Stamme, von sämtlichen israelitischen Stämmen, von denen jeder das Oberhaupt der Familien seines Stammes unter den Tausendschaften Israels war.15Als diese zu den Stämmen Ruben, Gad und halb Manasse in das Land Gilead gekommen waren, besprachen sie sich mit ihnen und sagten:16»Die ganze Gemeinde des HERRN läßt euch folgendes sagen: Was ist das für eine Treulosigkeit, die ihr euch gegen den Gott Israels habt zuschulden kommen lassen, daß ihr euch heute vom HERRN abwendet, indem ihr euch einen Altar baut und euch so gegen den HERRN auflehnt?17Haben wir noch nicht genug an der Versündigung bezüglich Peors, von der wir uns bis auf den heutigen Tag noch nicht gereinigt haben und um deretwillen das Sterben über die Gemeinde des HERRN kam? (4Mo 25,1)18Und ihr wollt euch dennoch heute vom HERRN lossagen? Die Folge davon wird sein: wenn ihr euch heute gegen den HERRN auflehnt, so wird er morgen seinen Zorn an der ganzen Gemeinde Israel auslassen.19Wenn übrigens das Land, das ihr innehabt, nach eurer Ansicht unrein ist, so kommt doch in das Eigentumsland des HERRN herüber, wo sich die Wohnstätte des HERRN befindet, und macht euch mitten unter uns ansässig! Aber lehnt euch nicht gegen den HERRN auf und lehnt euch nicht gegen uns auf, indem ihr euch außer dem Altar des HERRN, unsres Gottes, noch einen besonderen Altar erbaut!20Ist nicht damals, als Achan, der Sohn Serahs, sich treuloserweise an dem gebannten Gut vergriffen hatte, ein Zorngericht über die ganze Gemeinde Israel ergangen, obgleich er nur ein einzelner Mann war? Hat er nicht sein Vergehen mit dem Tode büßen müssen?«21Da antworteten die Stämme Ruben, Gad und halb Manasse den Häuptern der Tausendschaften Israels folgendermaßen:22»Der Starke, Gott der HERR, ja der Starke, Gott der HERR, der weiß es, und Israel soll es wissen: Wenn es aus Auflehnung und wenn es aus Treulosigkeit gegen den HERRN geschehen ist, so möge uns am heutigen Tage keine Rettung von dir (o Pinehas) zuteil werden!23Wenn wir uns einen Altar erbaut haben, um uns vom HERRN abzuwenden, oder wenn es zu dem Zweck geschehen ist, daß wir auf ihm Brandopfer und Speisopfer darbringen oder Heilsopfer auf ihm herrichten wollten, so möge der HERR selbst es ahnden!24Nein, nur aus Besorgnis vor einer gewissen Sache[4] haben wir das getan, weil wir nämlich dachten, künftig würden eure Kinder zu unsern Kindern sagen: ›Was habt ihr mit dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, gemein?25Der HERR hat ja doch den Jordan zur Grenze zwischen uns und euch Rubeniten und Gaditen gemacht: ihr habt keinen Anteil am HERRN!‹ Dadurch würden eure Kinder dann die unsrigen davon abbringen, den HERRN zu fürchten.26Darum dachten wir: Wir wollen uns doch daranmachen, den Altar zu bauen, nicht für Brandopfer und nicht für Schlachtopfer;27sondern er soll zwischen uns und euch und zwischen unsern künftigen Geschlechtern ein Zeugnis sein, daß wir dem Dienst des HERRN vor ihm mit unsern Brandopfern, unsern Schlachtopfern und unsern Heilsopfern obliegen (wollen); sonst könnten eure Kinder künftig zu unsern Kindern sagen: ›Ihr habt keinen Anteil am HERRN!‹28Wir dachten also: Wenn sie künftig zu uns oder unsern Nachkommen so sprechen sollten, dann wollen wir entgegnen: ›Seht euch doch die Bauart des Gottesaltars an, den unsere Väter errichtet haben, nicht für Brandopfer und nicht für Schlachtopfer, sondern zum Zeugnis zwischen uns und euch!‹29Fern sei es von uns, daß wir uns gegen den HERRN auflehnen (wollen) und uns heute vom HERRN abwenden, indem wir für Brandopfer, für Speisopfer und für Schlachtopfer noch einen besonderen Altar bauen außer dem Altar des HERRN, unseres Gottes, der vor seiner Wohnung steht!«30Als nun der Priester Pinehas und die Fürsten der Gemeinde, die Häupter der Tausendschaften Israels, die ihn begleiteten, diese Erklärung der Rubeniten, Gaditen und Manassiten vernommen hatten, waren sie dadurch zufriedengestellt.31Daher antwortete Pinehas, der Sohn des Priesters Eleasar, den Rubeniten, Gaditen und Manassiten: »Heute erkennen wir, daß der HERR wirklich in unserer Mitte ist, weil ihr euch eine solche Treulosigkeit gegen den HERRN nicht habt zuschulden kommen lassen. Dadurch habt ihr die Israeliten vor der Hand[5] des HERRN behütet.«32Als hierauf Pinehas, der Sohn des Priesters Eleasar, mit den Fürsten aus dem Lande Gilead von den Rubeniten und Gaditen ins Land Kanaan zu den Israeliten zurückgekehrt war und sie ihnen Bericht erstattet hatten,33waren die Israeliten dadurch zufriedengestellt; sie priesen Gott und dachten nicht mehr daran, gegen sie mit Heeresmacht auszuziehen, um das Land zu verwüsten, in welchem die Rubeniten und Gaditen wohnten.34Die Rubeniten und Gaditen aber gaben dem Altar den Namen ›Zeuge[6]‹; denn (sie sagten): »Er soll als Zeuge zwischen uns dienen, daß der HERR (der wahre) Gott ist.«
1At that time Joshua summoned the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh,2and said to them, “You have kept all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you and have obeyed my voice in all that I have commanded you. (4Mo 32,20; 5Mo 3,18; Jos 1,16)3You have not forsaken your brothers these many days, down to this day, but have been careful to keep the charge of the Lord your God.4And now the Lord your God has given rest to your brothers, as he promised them. Therefore turn and go to your tents in the land where your possession lies, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan. (Jos 11,23; Jos 13,8)5Only be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments and to cling to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.” (5Mo 6,5; 5Mo 6,6; 5Mo 6,17; 5Mo 10,12; 5Mo 11,1; 5Mo 11,13; 5Mo 11,22; Jos 23,11)6So Joshua blessed them and sent them away, and they went to their tents. (Jos 14,13)7Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given a possession in Bashan, but to the other half Joshua had given a possession beside their brothers in the land west of the Jordan. And when Joshua sent them away to their homes and blessed them, (Jos 17,5)8he said to them, “Go back to your tents with much wealth and with very much livestock, with silver, gold, bronze, and iron, and with much clothing. Divide the spoil of your enemies with your brothers.” (4Mo 31,27; 1Sam 30,24)9So the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned home, parting from the people of Israel at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, their own land of which they had possessed themselves by command of the Lord through Moses. The Eastern Tribes’ Altar of Witness
10And when they came to the region of the Jordan that is in the land of Canaan, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, an altar of imposing size.11And the people of Israel heard it said, “Behold, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built the altar at the frontier of the land of Canaan, in the region about the Jordan, on the side that belongs to the people of Israel.” (5Mo 13,12)12And when the people of Israel heard of it, the whole assembly of the people of Israel gathered at Shiloh to make war against them. (Ri 20,1)13Then the people of Israel sent to the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, (2Mo 6,25; 4Mo 25,7; Ri 20,28)14and with him ten chiefs, one from each of the tribal families of Israel, every one of them the head of a family among the clans of Israel. (4Mo 1,4)15And they came to the people of Reuben, the people of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, and they said to them,16“Thus says the whole congregation of the Lord, ‘What is this breach of faith that you have committed against the God of Israel in turning away this day from following the Lord by building yourselves an altar this day in rebellion against the Lord? (3Mo 17,8; 4Mo 14,9; 5Mo 12,13; Jos 22,18)17Have we not had enough of the sin at Peor from which even yet we have not cleansed ourselves, and for which there came a plague upon the congregation of the Lord, (4Mo 25,3; 5Mo 4,3; Ps 106,28)18that you too must turn away this day from following the Lord? And if you too rebel against the Lord today then tomorrow he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel. (4Mo 16,22; Jos 22,16)19But now, if the land of your possession is unclean, pass over into the Lord’s land where the Lord’s tabernacle stands, and take for yourselves a possession among us. Only do not rebel against the Lord or make us as rebels by building for yourselves an altar other than the altar of the Lord our God. (Jos 18,1; Jos 22,16; Jos 22,18)20Did not Achan the son of Zerah break faith in the matter of the devoted things, and wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel? And he did not perish alone for his iniquity.’” (Jos 7,1; Jos 7,5; Jos 22,18)21Then the people of Reuben, the people of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh said in answer to the heads of the families of Israel,22“The Mighty One, God, the Lord! The Mighty One, God, the Lord! He knows; and let Israel itself know! If it was in rebellion or in breach of faith against the Lord, do not spare us today (5Mo 10,17; 1Kön 8,39)23for building an altar to turn away from following the Lord. Or if we did so to offer burnt offerings or grain offerings or peace offerings on it, may the Lord himself take vengeance. (5Mo 18,19; 1Sam 20,16)24No, but we did it from fear that in time to come your children might say to our children, ‘What have you to do with the Lord, the God of Israel? (Jos 4,6; Jos 4,21)25For the Lord has made the Jordan a boundary between us and you, you people of Reuben and people of Gad. You have no portion in the Lord.’ So your children might make our children cease to worship the Lord.26Therefore we said, ‘Let us now build an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice,27but to be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we do perform the service of the Lord in his presence with our burnt offerings and sacrifices and peace offerings, so your children will not say to our children in time to come, “You have no portion in the Lord.”’ (1Mo 31,48; 5Mo 12,5; 5Mo 12,17; Jos 22,34; Jos 24,27)28And we thought, ‘If this should be said to us or to our descendants in time to come, we should say, “Behold, the copy of the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifice, but to be a witness between us and you.”’ (Jos 22,27)29Far be it from us that we should rebel against the Lord and turn away this day from following the Lord by building an altar for burnt offering, grain offering, or sacrifice, other than the altar of the Lord our God that stands before his tabernacle!” (Jos 22,16)30When Phinehas the priest and the chiefs of the congregation, the heads of the families of Israel who were with him, heard the words that the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the people of Manasseh spoke, it was good in their eyes. (Jos 22,13; Jos 22,33)31And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the people of Manasseh, “Today we know that the Lord is in our midst, because you have not committed this breach of faith against the Lord. Now you have delivered the people of Israel from the hand of the Lord.” (3Mo 26,11)32Then Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the chiefs, returned from the people of Reuben and the people of Gad in the land of Gilead to the land of Canaan, to the people of Israel, and brought back word to them. (Jos 22,10; Jos 22,15)33And the report was good in the eyes of the people of Israel. And the people of Israel blessed God and spoke no more of making war against them to destroy the land where the people of Reuben and the people of Gad were settled. (Jos 22,30; 1Chr 29,20; Neh 8,6; Dan 2,19; Lk 2,28)34The people of Reuben and the people of Gad called the altar Witness, “For,” they said, “it is a witness between us that the Lord is God.” (Jos 22,27)
