Warnung vor Rückfall in die Gesetzesgerechtigkeit

1 Weiter, meine Brüder und Schwestern: Freut euch in dem Herrn! Dass ich euch immer dasselbe schreibe, verdrießt mich nicht und macht euch umso gewisser. (Phil 2,18; Phil 4,4) 2 Nehmt euch in Acht vor den Hunden, nehmt euch in Acht vor den böswilligen Arbeitern, nehmt euch in Acht vor der Zerschneidung! (2Kor 11,13; Gal 5,12; Offb 22,15) 3 Denn wir sind die Beschneidung, die wir im Geist Gottes dienen und uns Christi Jesu rühmen und uns nicht verlassen auf Fleisch, (Röm 2,28; Röm 15,17; Phil 1,26) 4 obwohl ich meine Zuversicht auch aufs Fleisch setzen könnte. Wenn ein anderer meint, er könne sich aufs Fleisch verlassen, so könnte ich es viel mehr, (2Kor 11,18) 5 der ich am achten Tag beschnitten bin, aus dem Volk Israel, vom Stamm Benjamin, ein Hebräer von Hebräern, nach dem Gesetz ein Pharisäer, (Apg 26,5; Röm 11,1; 2Kor 11,22) 6 nach dem Eifer ein Verfolger der Gemeinde, nach der Gerechtigkeit, die das Gesetz fordert, untadelig gewesen. (Apg 8,3; Gal 1,13) 7 Aber was mir Gewinn war, das habe ich um Christi willen für Schaden erachtet. 8 Ja, ich erachte es noch alles für Schaden gegenüber der überschwänglichen Erkenntnis Christi Jesu, meines Herrn. Um seinetwillen ist mir das alles ein Schaden geworden, und ich erachte es für Dreck, auf dass ich Christus gewinne 9 und in ihm gefunden werde, dass ich nicht habe meine Gerechtigkeit, die aus dem Gesetz, sondern die durch den Glauben an Christus kommt, nämlich die Gerechtigkeit, die von Gott kommt durch den Glauben. 10 Ihn möchte ich erkennen und die Kraft seiner Auferstehung und die Gemeinschaft seiner Leiden und so seinem Tode gleich gestaltet werden, (Röm 6,3; Röm 8,17; 2Kor 4,10; Gal 6,17)

11 damit ich gelange zur Auferstehung von den Toten.

Das Ziel

12 Nicht, dass ich’s schon ergriffen habe oder schon vollkommen sei; ich jage ihm aber nach, ob ich’s wohl ergreifen könnte, weil ich von Christus Jesus ergriffen bin. (1Tim 6,12) 13 Meine Brüder und Schwestern, ich schätze mich selbst nicht so ein, dass ich’s ergriffen habe. Eins aber sage ich: Ich vergesse, was dahinten ist, und strecke mich aus nach dem, was da vorne ist, 14 und jage nach dem vorgesteckten Ziel, dem Siegespreis der himmlischen Berufung Gottes in Christus Jesus. (1Kor 9,24) 15 Wie viele nun von uns vollkommen sind, die lasst uns so gesinnt sein. Und solltet ihr in einem Stück anders denken, so wird euch Gott auch das offenbaren. 16 Nur, was wir schon erreicht haben, darin lasst uns auch leben. 17 Ahmt mit mir Christus nach, Brüder und Schwestern, und seht auf die, die so wandeln, wie ihr uns zum Vorbild habt. (1Kor 11,1) 18 Denn viele wandeln so, dass ich euch oft von ihnen gesagt habe, nun aber sage ich’s auch unter Tränen: Sie sind die Feinde des Kreuzes Christi. 19 Ihr Ende ist die Verdammnis, ihr Gott ist der Bauch und ihre Ehre ist in ihrer Schande; sie sind irdisch gesinnt. (Hos 4,7; Röm 16,18) 20 Wir aber sind Bürger im Himmel; woher wir auch erwarten den Heiland, den Herrn Jesus Christus, (Eph 2,6; Kol 3,1; Tit 2,13; Hebr 12,22)

Do not trust in who you are or what you can do

1 Further, my brothers and sisters, be joyful because you belong to the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write about some important matters to you again. If you know about them, you will have a safe path to follow. 2 Watch out for those dogs. They are people who do evil things. When they circumcise, it is nothing more than a useless cutting of the body. 3 But we have been truly circumcised. We serve God by the power of his Spirit. We boast about what Christ Jesus has done. We don’t put our trust in who we are or what we can do. 4 I have many reasons to trust in who I am and what I have done. Someone else may think they have reasons to trust in these things. But I have even more. 5 I was circumcised on the eighth day. I am part of the people of Israel. I am from the tribe of Benjamin. I am a pure Hebrew. As far as the law is concerned, I am a Pharisee. 6 As far as being committed is concerned, I opposed and attacked the church. As far as keeping the law is concerned, I kept it perfectly. 7 I thought things like that were really something great. But now I consider them to be nothing because of Christ. 8 Even more, I consider everything to be nothing compared to knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. To know him is worth much more than anything else. Because of him I have lost everything. But I consider all of it to be garbage so I can know Christ better. 9 I want to be joined to him. Being right with God does not come from my obeying the law. It comes because I believe in Christ. It comes from God because of faith. 10 I want to know Christ better. Yes, I want to know the power that raised him from the dead. I want to join him in his sufferings. I want to become like him by sharing in his death. 11 Then by God’s grace I will rise from the dead. 12 I have not yet received all these things. I have not yet reached my goal. Christ Jesus took hold of me so that I could reach that goal. So I keep pushing myself forward to reach it. 13 Brothers and sisters, I don’t consider that I have taken hold of it yet. But here is the one thing I do. I forget what is behind me. I push hard towards what is ahead of me. 14 I push myself forward towards the goal to win the prize. God has appointed me to win it. The heavenly prize is Christ Jesus himself.

Following Paul’s example

15 So all of us who are grown up in the faith should see things this way. Maybe you think differently about something. But God will make it clear to you. 16 Only let us live up to what we have already reached. 17 Brothers and sisters, join together in following my example. You have us as a model. So pay close attention to those who live as we do. 18 I have told you these things many times before. Now I tell you again with tears in my eyes. Many people live like enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 The only thing they have coming to them is death. Their stomach is their god. They boast about what they should be ashamed of. They think only about earthly things. 20 But we are citizens of heaven. And we can hardly wait for a Saviour from there. He is the Lord Jesus Christ. 21 He has the power to bring everything under his control. By his power he will change our earthly bodies. They will become like his glorious body.
