1Ist nun bei euch Ermahnung in Christus, ist Trost der Liebe, ist Gemeinschaft des Geistes, ist herzliche Liebe und Barmherzigkeit,2so macht meine Freude dadurch vollkommen, dass ihr eines Sinnes seid, gleiche Liebe habt, einmütig und einträchtig seid.3Tut nichts aus Eigennutz oder um eitler Ehre willen, sondern in Demut achte einer den andern höher als sich selbst, (Röm 12,10; Gal 5,26)4und ein jeder sehe nicht auf das Seine, sondern auch auf das, was dem andern dient. (1Kor 10,24; 1Kor 13,5)5Seid so unter euch gesinnt, wie es der Gemeinschaft in Christus Jesus entspricht:[1]6Er, der in göttlicher Gestalt war, hielt es nicht für einen Raub, Gott gleich zu sein, (Joh 1,1; Joh 17,5)7sondern entäußerte sich selbst und nahm Knechtsgestalt an, ward den Menschen gleich und der Erscheinung nach als Mensch erkannt. (Jes 53,3; 2Kor 8,9; Hebr 2,14; Hebr 2,17)8Er erniedrigte sich selbst und ward gehorsam bis zum Tode, ja zum Tode am Kreuz. (Lk 14,11; Hebr 5,8)9Darum hat ihn auch Gott erhöht und hat ihm den Namen gegeben, der über alle Namen ist, (Apg 2,33; Eph 1,20; Hebr 1,3)10dass in dem Namen Jesu sich beugen sollen aller derer Knie, die im Himmel und auf Erden und unter der Erde sind, (Jes 45,23; Röm 14,11)11und alle Zungen bekennen sollen, dass Jesus Christus der Herr ist, zur Ehre Gottes, des Vaters. (Röm 10,9; 2Kor 4,5; Offb 5,13)12Also, meine Lieben, – wie ihr allezeit gehorsam gewesen seid, nicht allein in meiner Gegenwart, sondern jetzt noch viel mehr in meiner Abwesenheit – schaffet, dass ihr selig werdet, mit Furcht und Zittern. (2Kor 7,15)13Denn Gott ist’s, der in euch wirkt beides, das Wollen und das Vollbringen, nach seinem Wohlgefallen. (2Kor 8,10; Phil 1,6)14Tut alles ohne Murren und ohne Zweifel, (1Kor 10,10; 1Petr 4,9)15damit ihr ohne Tadel und lauter seid, Gottes Kinder, ohne Makel mitten unter einem verdorbenen und verkehrten Geschlecht, unter dem ihr scheint als Lichter in der Welt, (5Mo 32,5; Mt 5,14; Joh 12,36; Eph 5,8; Phil 1,10)16dadurch dass ihr festhaltet am Wort des Lebens, mir zum Ruhm an dem Tage Christi, sodass ich nicht vergeblich gelaufen bin noch vergeblich gearbeitet habe. (Jes 49,4; Apg 5,20; 2Kor 1,14; Gal 2,2; 1Thess 2,19; 1Joh 1,1)17Und wenn ich auch geopfert werde bei dem Opfer und Gottesdienst eures Glaubens, so freue ich mich und freue mich mit euch allen. (Phil 1,18; 2Tim 4,6)18Ebenso sollt auch ihr euch freuen und sollt euch mit mir freuen. (Phil 3,1; Phil 4,4)
Sendung des Timotheus und Rückkehr des Epaphroditus
19Ich hoffe aber in dem Herrn Jesus, dass ich Timotheus bald zu euch senden werde, damit ich auch erquickt werde, wenn ich erfahre, wie es um euch steht. (Apg 16,1; 1Kor 4,17; 1Kor 16,10; 1Thess 3,2)20Denn ich habe keinen, der so ganz meines Sinnes ist, der so herzlich für euch sorgen wird.21Denn sie suchen alle das Ihre, nicht das, was Jesu Christi ist.22Ihr aber wisst, dass er sich bewährt hat; denn wie ein Kind dem Vater hat er mit mir dem Evangelium gedient.23Ihn also hoffe ich zu senden, sobald ich erfahren habe, wie es um mich steht.24Ich vertraue aber in dem Herrn darauf, dass auch ich selbst bald kommen werde. (Phil 1,25)25Ich habe es aber für nötig angesehen, den Bruder Epaphroditus zu euch zu senden, der mein Mitarbeiter und Mitstreiter ist und euer Abgesandter und Helfer in meiner Not; (2Kor 8,23; Phil 4,18; 1Thess 3,2; Phlm 1,1; Phlm 1,2)26denn er hatte nach euch allen Verlangen und war tief bekümmert, weil ihr gehört hattet, dass er krank geworden war.27Und er war auch todkrank, aber Gott hat sich über ihn erbarmt; nicht allein aber über ihn, sondern auch über mich, damit ich nicht eine Traurigkeit über die andere hätte.28Ich habe ihn nun umso eiliger gesandt, damit ihr ihn seht und wieder fröhlich werdet und auch ich weniger Traurigkeit habe.29So nehmt ihn nun auf in dem Herrn mit aller Freude und haltet solche Menschen in Ehren. (1Kor 16,16)30Denn um des Werkes Christi willen ist er dem Tode so nahe gekommen, da er sein Leben nicht geschont hat, um mir zu dienen an eurer statt.
1So does belonging to Christ help you in any way? Does his love comfort you at all? Do you share anything in common because of the Holy Spirit? Has Christ ever been gentle and loving towards you?2If any of these things has happened to you, then agree with one another. Have the same love. Be one in spirit and in the way you think and act. By doing this, you will make my joy complete.3Don’t do anything only to get ahead. Don’t do it because you are proud. Instead, be humble. Value others more than yourselves.4None of you should look out just for your own good. Each of you should also look out for the good of others.5As you deal with one another, you should think and act as Jesus did.6In his very nature he was God. Jesus was equal with God. But Jesus didn’t take advantage of that fact.7Instead, he made himself nothing. He did this by taking on the nature of a servant. He was made just like human beings.8He appeared as a man. He was humble and obeyed God completely. He did this even though it led to his death. Even worse, he died on a cross!9So God lifted him up to the highest place. God gave him the name that is above every name.10When the name of Jesus is spoken, everyone will kneel down to worship him. Everyone in heaven and on earth and under the earth will kneel down to worship him.11Everyone’s mouth will say that Jesus Christ is Lord. And God the Father will receive the glory.
Live without complaining
12My dear friends, you have always obeyed God. You obeyed while I was with you. And you have obeyed even more while I am not with you. So continue to work out your own salvation. Do it with fear and trembling.13God is working in you. He wants your plans and your acts to fulfil his good purpose.14Do everything without complaining or arguing.15Then you will be pure and without blame. You will be children of God without fault among sinful and evil people. Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky.16You will shine as you hold on tight to the word of life. Then I will be able to boast about you on the day Christ returns. I can be happy that I didn’t run or work for nothing.17But my life might even be poured out like a drink offering on your sacrifices. I’m talking about the way you serve because you believe. Even so, I am glad. I am joyful with all of you.18So you too should be glad and joyful with me.
Timothy and Epaphroditus
19I hope to send Timothy to you soon if the Lord Jesus allows it. Then I will be encouraged when I receive news about you.20I have no one else like Timothy. He will truly care about how you are doing.21All the others are looking out for their own interests. They are not looking out for the interests of Jesus Christ.22But you know that Timothy has proved himself. He has served with me like a son with his father in spreading the good news.23So I hope to send him as soon as I see how things go with me.24And I’m sure I myself will come soon if the Lord allows it.25But I think it’s necessary to send Epaphroditus back to you. He is my brother in the Lord. He is a worker and a soldier of Christ together with me. He is also your messenger. You sent him to take care of my needs.26He longs for all of you. He is troubled because you heard he was ill.27He was very ill. In fact, he almost died. But God had mercy on him. He also had mercy on me. God spared me sadness after sadness.28So I want even more to send him to you. Then when you see him again, you will be glad. And I won’t worry so much.29So then, welcome him as a brother in the Lord with great joy. Honour people like him.30He almost died for the work of Christ. He put his life in danger to make up for the help you yourselves couldn’t give me.
