Jesus vor Pilatus

1 Und alsbald am Morgen hielten die Hohenpriester Rat mit den Ältesten und Schriftgelehrten, dazu der ganze Hohe Rat, und sie banden Jesus und führten ihn ab und überantworteten ihn Pilatus. 2 Und Pilatus fragte ihn: Bist du der König der Juden? Er aber antwortete ihm und sprach: Du sagst es. 3 Und die Hohenpriester beschuldigten ihn hart. 4 Pilatus aber fragte ihn abermals und sprach: Antwortest du nichts? Siehe, wie hart sie dich verklagen! 5 Jesus aber antwortete nichts mehr, sodass sich Pilatus verwunderte. (Jes 53,7; Mk 14,61)

Jesu Verurteilung und Verspottung

6 Er pflegte ihnen aber zum Fest einen Gefangenen loszugeben, welchen sie erbaten. 7 Es war aber einer, genannt Barabbas, gefangen mit den Aufrührern, die beim Aufruhr einen Mord begangen hatten. 8 Und das Volk ging hinauf und bat, dass er tue, wie er ihnen zu tun pflegte. 9 Pilatus aber antwortete ihnen: Wollt ihr, dass ich euch den König der Juden losgebe? 10 Denn er erkannte, dass ihn die Hohenpriester aus Neid überantwortet hatten. 11 Aber die Hohenpriester wiegelten das Volk auf, dass er ihnen viel lieber den Barabbas losgebe. 12 Pilatus aber antwortete wiederum und sprach zu ihnen: Was wollt ihr dann, dass ich tue mit dem, den ihr den König der Juden nennt? 13 Sie schrien abermals: Kreuzige ihn! 14 Pilatus aber sprach zu ihnen: Was hat er denn Böses getan? Aber sie schrien noch viel mehr: Kreuzige ihn! 15 Pilatus aber wollte dem Volk Genüge tun und gab ihnen Barabbas los und ließ Jesus geißeln und überantwortete ihn, dass er gekreuzigt würde. 16 Die Soldaten aber führten ihn hinein in den Palast, das ist ins Prätorium, und riefen die ganze Kohorte zusammen 17 und zogen ihm einen Purpurmantel an und flochten eine Dornenkrone und setzten sie ihm auf 18 und fingen an, ihn zu grüßen: Gegrüßet seist du, der Juden König! 19 Und sie schlugen ihn mit einem Rohr auf das Haupt und spien ihn an und fielen auf die Knie und huldigten ihm. (Mk 14,65)

Jesu Kreuzigung und Tod

20 Und als sie ihn verspottet hatten, zogen sie ihm den Purpurmantel aus und zogen ihm seine Kleider an. Und sie führten ihn hinaus, dass sie ihn kreuzigten. 21 Und zwangen einen, der vorüberging, Simon von Kyrene, der vom Feld kam, den Vater des Alexander und des Rufus, dass er ihm das Kreuz trage. 22 Und sie brachten ihn zu der Stätte Golgatha, das heißt übersetzt: Schädelstätte. 23 Und sie gaben ihm Myrrhe im Wein zu trinken; aber er nahm’s nicht. (Spr 31,6; Mk 14,25) 24 Und sie kreuzigten ihn. Und sie teilten seine Kleider und warfen das Los darum, wer was bekommen sollte. (Ps 22,19) 25 Und es war die dritte Stunde, als sie ihn kreuzigten. 26 Und es stand geschrieben, welche Schuld man ihm gab, nämlich: Der König der Juden. 27-28 Und sie kreuzigten mit ihm zwei Räuber, einen zu seiner Rechten und einen zu seiner Linken.^[1] (Jes 53,12; Mk 14,48) 29 Und die vorübergingen, lästerten ihn und schüttelten ihre Köpfe und sprachen: Ha, der du den Tempel abbrichst und baust ihn auf in drei Tagen, (Ps 22,8; Mk 14,58) 30 hilf dir nun selber und steig herab vom Kreuz! 31 Desgleichen verspotteten ihn auch die Hohenpriester untereinander samt den Schriftgelehrten und sprachen: Er hat andern geholfen und kann sich selber nicht helfen. (Mk 5,34; Mk 6,56) 32 Der Christus, der König von Israel, er steige nun vom Kreuz, damit wir sehen und glauben. Und die mit ihm gekreuzigt waren, schmähten ihn auch. (Joh 4,48) 33 Und zur sechsten Stunde kam eine Finsternis über das ganze Land bis zur neunten Stunde. (Am 8,9) 34 Und zu der neunten Stunde rief Jesus laut: Eli, Eli, lama asabtani?^[2] Das heißt übersetzt: Mein Gott, mein Gott, warum^[3] hast du mich verlassen? (Ps 22,2) 35 Und einige, die dabeistanden, als sie das hörten, sprachen sie: Siehe, er ruft den Elia. 36 Da lief einer und füllte einen Schwamm mit Essig, steckte ihn auf ein Rohr, gab ihm zu trinken und sprach: Halt, lasst uns sehen, ob Elia komme und ihn herabnehme! (Ps 69,22) 37 Aber Jesus schrie laut und verschied. 38 Und der Vorhang im Tempel zerriss in zwei Stücke von oben an bis unten aus. (2Mo 26,31; 2Chr 3,14) 39 Der Hauptmann aber, der dabeistand, ihm gegenüber, und sah, dass er so verschied, sprach: Wahrlich, dieser Mensch ist Gottes Sohn gewesen! (Mk 1,11; Mk 14,61) 40 Und es waren auch Frauen da, die von ferne zuschauten, unter ihnen Maria Magdalena und Maria, die Mutter Jakobus des Kleinen und des Joses, und Salome, 41 die ihm nachgefolgt waren, als er in Galiläa war, und ihm gedient hatten, und viele andere Frauen, die mit ihm hinauf nach Jerusalem gegangen waren. Jesu Grablegung

42 Und als es schon Abend wurde und weil Rüsttag war, das ist der Tag vor dem Sabbat, (5Mo 21,22) 43 kam Josef von Arimathäa, ein angesehener Ratsherr, der auch auf das Reich Gottes wartete; der wagte es und ging hinein zu Pilatus und bat um den Leichnam Jesu. 44 Pilatus aber wunderte sich, dass er schon tot war, und rief den Hauptmann und fragte ihn, ob er schon länger gestorben wäre. 45 Und als er’s erkundet hatte von dem Hauptmann, überließ er Josef den Leichnam. 46 Und der kaufte ein Leinentuch und nahm ihn ab vom Kreuz und wickelte ihn in das Tuch und legte ihn in ein Grab, das war in einen Felsen gehauen, und wälzte einen Stein vor des Grabes Tür. 47 Aber Maria Magdalena und Maria, die Mutter des Joses, sahen, wo er hingelegt war.

Jesus is brought to Pilate

1 It was very early in the morning. The chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law, and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they tied Jesus up and led him away. Then they handed him over to Pilate. 2 ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ asked Pilate. ‘You have said so,’ Jesus replied. 3 The chief priests brought many charges against him. 4 So Pilate asked him again, ‘Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they charge you with.’ 5 But Jesus still did not reply. Pilate was amazed. 6 It was the usual practice at the Passover Feast to let one prisoner go free. The people could choose the one they wanted. 7 A man named Barabbas was in prison. He was there with some other people who had fought against the country’s rulers. They had committed murder while they were fighting against the rulers. 8 The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did. 9 ‘Do you want me to let the king of the Jews go free?’ asked Pilate. 10 He knew that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him because they wanted to get their own way. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd. So the crowd asked Pilate to let Barabbas go free instead. 12 ‘Then what should I do with the one you call the king of the Jews?’ Pilate asked them. 13 ‘Crucify him!’ the crowd shouted. 14 ‘Why? What wrong has he done?’ asked Pilate. But they shouted even louder, ‘Crucify him!’ 15 Pilate wanted to satisfy the crowd. So he let Barabbas go free. He ordered that Jesus be whipped. Then he handed him over to be nailed to a cross.

The soldiers make fun of Jesus

16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace. It was called the Praetorium. They called together the whole company of soldiers. 17 The soldiers put a purple robe on Jesus. Then they twisted thorns together to make a crown. They placed it on his head. 18 They began to call out to him, ‘We honour you, king of the Jews!’ 19 Again and again they hit him on the head with a stick. They spat on him. They fell on their knees and pretended to honour him. 20 After they had made fun of him, they took off the purple robe. They put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him out to nail him to a cross.

Jesus is nailed to a cross

21 A man named Simon was passing by. He was from Cyrene. He was the father of Alexander and Rufus. Simon was on his way in from the country. The soldiers forced him to carry the cross. 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha. The word Golgotha means the Place of the Skull. 23 Then they gave him wine mixed with spices. But he did not take it. 24 They nailed him to the cross. Then they divided up his clothes. They cast lots to see what each of them would get. 25 It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him. 26 They wrote out the charge against him. It read, The King of the Jews. 27-28 They crucified with him two rebels against Rome. One was on his right and one was on his left. 29 Those who passed by shouted at Jesus and made fun of him. They shook their heads and said, ‘So you are going to destroy the temple and build it again in three days? 30 Then come down from the cross! Save yourself!’ 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law made fun of him among themselves. ‘He saved others,’ they said. ‘But he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross! When we see that, we will believe.’ Those who were being crucified with Jesus also made fun of him.

Jesus dies

33 At noon, darkness covered the whole land. It lasted three hours. 34 At three o’clock in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?’ This means ‘My God, my God, why have you deserted me?’ (Ps 22,1) 35 Some of those standing nearby heard Jesus cry out. They said, ‘Listen! He’s calling for Elijah.’ 36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with wine vinegar. He put it on a stick. He offered it to Jesus to drink. ‘Leave him alone,’ he said. ‘Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down.’ 37 With a loud cry, Jesus took his last breath. 38 The temple curtain was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 A Roman commander was standing there in front of Jesus. He saw how Jesus died. Then he said, ‘This man was surely the Son of God!’ 40 Not very far away, some women were watching. Mary Magdalene was among them. Mary, the mother of the younger James and of Joseph, was also there. So was Salome. 41 In Galilee these women had followed Jesus. They had taken care of his needs. Many other women were also there. They had come up with him to Jerusalem.

Jesus is buried

42 It was the day before the Sabbath. That day was called Preparation Day. As evening approached, 43 Joseph went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Joseph was from the town of Arimathea. He was a leading member of the Jewish Council. He was waiting for God’s kingdom. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus was already dead. So he called for the Roman commander. He asked him if Jesus had already died. 45 The commander said it was true. So Pilate gave the body to Joseph. 46 Then Joseph bought some linen cloth. He took down the body and wrapped it in the linen. He put it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where Jesus’ body had been placed.
