Der Plan der Hohenpriester und der Schriftgelehrten
1Es waren noch zwei Tage bis zum Passafest und den Tagen der Ungesäuerten Brote. Und die Hohenpriester und Schriftgelehrten suchten, wie sie ihn mit List ergreifen und töten könnten. (5Mo 16,1; Mt 26,1; Mk 11,18; Lk 22,1; Joh 11,47; Joh 13,1; Joh 18,1)2Denn sie sprachen: Ja nicht bei dem Fest, damit es nicht einen Aufruhr im Volk gebe.
Die Salbung in Betanien
3Und als er in Betanien war im Hause Simons des Aussätzigen und saß zu Tisch, da kam eine Frau, die hatte ein Alabastergefäß mit unverfälschtem, kostbarem Nardenöl, und sie zerbrach das Gefäß und goss das Öl auf sein Haupt. (Lk 7,36; Joh 12,1)4Da wurden einige unwillig und sprachen untereinander: Was soll diese Vergeudung des Salböls?5Man hätte dieses Öl für mehr als dreihundert Silbergroschen verkaufen können und das Geld den Armen geben. Und sie fuhren sie an. (Mk 10,21)6Jesus aber sprach: Lasst sie! Was bekümmert ihr sie? Sie hat ein gutes Werk an mir getan.7Denn ihr habt allezeit Arme bei euch, und wenn ihr wollt, könnt ihr ihnen Gutes tun; mich aber habt ihr nicht allezeit. (5Mo 15,11)8Sie hat getan, was sie konnte; sie hat meinen Leib im Voraus gesalbt zu meinem Begräbnis. (Mk 16,1)9Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wo das Evangelium gepredigt wird in der ganzen Welt, da wird man auch das sagen zu ihrem Gedächtnis, was sie getan hat. (Mk 13,10)
Der Verrat des Judas
10Und Judas Iskariot, einer von den Zwölfen, ging hin zu den Hohenpriestern, dass er ihn an sie verriete.11Da sie das hörten, wurden sie froh und versprachen, ihm Geld zu geben. Und er suchte, wie er ihn bei guter Gelegenheit verraten könnte.
Das Abendmahl
12Und am ersten Tage der Ungesäuerten Brote, da man das Passalamm opferte, sprachen seine Jünger zu ihm: Wo willst du, dass wir hingehen und das Passalamm bereiten, damit du es essen kannst?13Und er sandte zwei seiner Jünger und sprach zu ihnen: Geht hin in die Stadt, und es wird euch ein Mensch begegnen, der trägt einen Krug mit Wasser; folgt ihm, (Mk 11,1)14und wo er hineingeht, da sprecht zu dem Hausherrn: Der Meister lässt dir sagen: Wo ist die Herberge für mich, in der ich das Passalamm essen kann mit meinen Jüngern?15Und er wird euch einen großen Saal zeigen, der schön ausgelegt und vorbereitet ist; und dort richtet für uns zu.16Und die Jünger gingen hin und kamen in die Stadt und fanden’s, wie er ihnen gesagt hatte, und bereiteten das Passalamm.17Und am Abend kam er mit den Zwölfen.18Und als sie bei Tisch waren und aßen, sprach Jesus: Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Einer unter euch, der mit mir isst, wird mich verraten.19Da wurden sie traurig und sagten zu ihm, einer nach dem andern: Bin ich’s?20Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Einer von den Zwölfen, der mit mir seinen Bissen in die Schüssel taucht.21Der Menschensohn geht zwar hin, wie von ihm geschrieben steht; weh aber dem Menschen, durch den der Menschensohn verraten wird! Es wäre für diesen Menschen besser, wenn er nie geboren wäre. (Mk 9,12)22Und als sie aßen, nahm er das Brot, dankte und brach’s und gab’s ihnen und sprach: Nehmet; das ist mein Leib. (Mk 6,41; 1Kor 10,16; 1Kor 11,23)23Und er nahm den Kelch, dankte und gab ihnen den; und sie tranken alle daraus.24Und er sprach zu ihnen: Das ist mein Blut des Bundes[1], das für viele vergossen wird. (2Mo 24,8; Mk 10,45; Hebr 9,15)25Wahrlich, ich sage euch, dass ich nicht mehr trinken werde vom Gewächs des Weinstocks bis an den Tag, an dem ich aufs Neue davon trinke im Reich Gottes.26Und als sie den Lobgesang gesungen hatten, gingen sie hinaus an den Ölberg.
Die Ankündigung der Verleugnung des Petrus
27Und Jesus sprach zu ihnen: Ihr werdet alle Ärgernis nehmen; denn es steht geschrieben: »Ich werde den Hirten schlagen, und die Schafe werden sich zerstreuen.« (Joh 16,32)28Wenn ich aber auferstanden bin, will ich vor euch hingehen nach Galiläa. (Mk 16,7)29Petrus aber sagte zu ihm: Wenn auch alle Ärgernis nehmen, so doch ich nicht!30Und Jesus sprach zu ihm: Wahrlich, ich sage dir: Heute, in dieser Nacht, ehe denn der Hahn zweimal kräht, wirst du mich dreimal verleugnen.31Er aber redete noch weiter: Auch wenn ich mit dir sterben müsste, werde ich dich nicht verleugnen! Das Gleiche sagten sie alle. (Joh 11,16)
Jesus in Gethsemane
32Und sie kamen zu einem Garten mit Namen Gethsemane. Und er sprach zu seinen Jüngern: Setzt euch hierher, bis ich gebetet habe.33Und er nahm mit sich Petrus und Jakobus und Johannes und fing an zu zittern und zu zagen (Mt 17,1)34und sprach zu ihnen: Meine Seele ist betrübt bis an den Tod; bleibt hier und wachet! (Ps 42,6; Joh 12,27)35Und er ging ein wenig weiter, fiel nieder auf die Erde und betete, dass, wenn es möglich wäre, die Stunde an ihm vorüberginge,36und sprach: Abba, Vater, alles ist dir möglich; nimm diesen Kelch von mir; doch nicht, was ich will, sondern was du willst! (Mk 10,38; Joh 6,38; Gal 4,6)37Und er kam und fand sie schlafend und sprach zu Petrus: Simon, schläfst du? Vermochtest du nicht eine Stunde zu wachen?38Wachet und betet, dass ihr nicht in Versuchung fallt! Der Geist ist willig; aber das Fleisch ist schwach. (Lk 21,36)39Und er ging wieder hin und betete und sprach dieselben Worte40und kam wieder und fand sie schlafend; denn ihre Augen waren voller Schlaf, und sie wussten nicht, was sie ihm antworten sollten.41Und er kam zum dritten Mal und sprach zu ihnen: Ach, wollt ihr weiter schlafen und ruhen? Es ist genug; die Stunde ist gekommen. Siehe, der Menschensohn wird überantwortet in die Hände der Sünder. (Mk 9,31; Mk 10,33)42Steht auf, lasst uns gehen! Siehe, der mich verrät, ist nahe. (Joh 14,31)
Jesu Gefangennahme
43Und alsbald, während er noch redete, kam herzu Judas, einer von den Zwölfen, und mit ihm eine Schar mit Schwertern und mit Stangen, von den Hohenpriestern und Schriftgelehrten und Ältesten.44Und der Verräter hatte ihnen ein Zeichen genannt und gesagt: Welchen ich küssen werde, der ist’s; den ergreift und führt ihn sicher ab.45Und als er kam, trat er alsbald zu ihm und sprach: Rabbi!, und küsste ihn.46Die aber legten Hand an ihn und ergriffen ihn.47Einer aber von denen, die dabeistanden, zog sein Schwert und schlug nach dem Knecht des Hohenpriesters und hieb ihm ein Ohr ab.48Und Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Seid ihr ausgezogen wie gegen einen Räuber mit Schwertern und mit Stangen, mich gefangen zu nehmen? (Mk 15,27)49Ich bin täglich bei euch im Tempel gewesen und habe gelehrt, und ihr habt mich nicht ergriffen. Aber so muss die Schrift erfüllt werden. (Mk 9,12)50Da verließen ihn alle und flohen.51Und ein junger Mann folgte ihm nach, der war mit einem Leinengewand bekleidet auf der bloßen Haut; und sie griffen nach ihm.52Er aber ließ das Gewand fahren und floh nackt. (Am 2,16)
Jesus vor dem Hohen Rat
53Und sie führten Jesus zu dem Hohenpriester; und es versammelten sich alle Hohenpriester und Ältesten und Schriftgelehrten.54Petrus aber folgte ihm nach von ferne, bis hinein in den Palast des Hohenpriesters, und saß da bei den Knechten und wärmte sich am Feuer.55Aber die Hohenpriester und der ganze Hohe Rat suchten Zeugnis gegen Jesus, auf dass sie ihn zu Tode brächten, und fanden nichts.56Denn viele gaben falsches Zeugnis gegen ihn; aber ihr Zeugnis stimmte nicht überein. (Ps 27,12)57Und einige standen auf und gaben falsches Zeugnis gegen ihn und sprachen:58Wir haben gehört, dass er gesagt hat: Ich will diesen Tempel, der mit Händen gemacht ist, abbrechen und in drei Tagen einen andern bauen, der nicht mit Händen gemacht ist. (Mk 8,31; Mk 12,10; Mk 13,2)59Aber ihr Zeugnis stimmte auch darin nicht überein.60Und der Hohepriester stand auf, trat in die Mitte und fragte Jesus und sprach: Antwortest du nichts auf das, was diese gegen dich bezeugen?61Er aber schwieg still und antwortete nichts. Da fragte ihn der Hohepriester abermals und sprach zu ihm: Bist du der Christus, der Sohn des Hochgelobten? (Jes 53,7; Mk 8,29; Mk 15,5)62Jesus aber sprach: Ich bin’s; und ihr werdet sehen den Menschensohn sitzen zur Rechten der Kraft und kommen mit den Wolken des Himmels. (Ps 110,1; Dan 7,13; Mk 12,36; Mk 13,26)63Da zerriss der Hohepriester seine Kleider und sprach: Was bedürfen wir weiterer Zeugen?64Ihr habt die Gotteslästerung gehört. Was meint ihr? Sie aber verurteilten ihn alle, dass er des Todes schuldig sei.65Da fingen einige an, ihn anzuspeien und sein Angesicht zu verdecken und ihn mit Fäusten zu schlagen und zu ihm zu sagen: Weissage uns! Und die Knechte schlugen ihn ins Angesicht. (Mk 15,19)
Die Verleugnung des Petrus
66Und Petrus war unten im Hof. Da kam eine von den Mägden des Hohenpriesters;67und als sie Petrus sah, wie er sich wärmte, schaute sie ihn an und sprach: Und du warst auch mit dem Jesus von Nazareth.68Er leugnete aber und sprach: Ich weiß nicht und verstehe nicht, was du sagst. Und er ging hinaus in den Vorhof, und der Hahn krähte.69Und die Magd sah ihn und fing abermals an, denen zu sagen, die dabeistanden: Dieser ist einer von denen.70Und er leugnete abermals. Und nach einer kleinen Weile sprachen die, die dabeistanden, abermals zu Petrus: Wahrhaftig, du bist einer von denen; denn du bist auch ein Galiläer.71Er aber fing an, sich zu verfluchen und zu schwören: Ich kenne den Menschen nicht, von dem ihr redet.72Und alsbald krähte der Hahn zum zweiten Mal. Da gedachte Petrus an das Wort, das Jesus zu ihm gesagt hatte: Ehe der Hahn zweimal kräht, wirst du mich dreimal verleugnen. Und er fing an zu weinen.
1The Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were only two days away. The chief priests and the teachers of the law were plotting to arrest Jesus secretly. They wanted to kill him.2‘But not during the feast,’ they said. ‘The people may stir up trouble.’3Jesus was in Bethany. He was at the table in the home of Simon, who had a skin disease. A woman came with a special sealed jar. It contained very expensive perfume made out of pure nard. She broke the jar open and poured the perfume on Jesus’ head.4Some of the people there became angry. They said to one another, ‘Why waste this perfume?5It could have been sold for more than a year’s pay. The money could have been given to poor people.’ So they found fault with the woman.6‘Leave her alone,’ Jesus said. ‘Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.7You will always have poor people with you. You can help them any time you want to. But you will not always have me.8She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body to prepare me to be buried.9What I’m about to tell you is true. What she has done will be told anywhere the good news is preached all over the world. It will be told in memory of her.’10Judas Iscariot was one of the 12 disciples. He went to the chief priests to hand Jesus over to them.11They were delighted to hear that he would do this. They promised to give Judas money. So he watched for the right time to hand Jesus over to them.
The Last Supper
12It was the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. That was the time to sacrifice the Passover lamb. Jesus’ disciples asked him, ‘Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover meal?’13So he sent out two of his disciples. He told them, ‘Go into the city. A man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him.14He will enter a house. Say to its owner, “The Teacher asks, ‘Where is my guest room? Where can I eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’ ”15He will show you a large upstairs room. It will have furniture and will be ready. Prepare for us to eat there.’16The disciples left and went into the city. They found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover meal.17When evening came, Jesus arrived with the 12 disciples.18While they were at the table eating, Jesus said, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. One of you who is eating with me will hand me over to my enemies.’19The disciples became sad. One by one they said to him, ‘Surely you don’t mean me?’20‘It is one of you,’ Jesus replied. ‘It is the one who dips bread into the bowl with me.21The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But how terrible it will be for the one who hands over the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.’22While they were eating, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to his disciples and said, ‘Take it. This is my body.’23Then he took a cup. He gave thanks and handed it to them. All of them drank from it.24‘This is my blood of the covenant,’ he said to them. ‘It is poured out for many.25What I’m about to tell you is true. I won’t drink wine with you again until the day I drink it in God’s kingdom.’26Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus says that the disciples will turn away
27‘You will all turn away,’ Jesus told the disciples. ‘It is written, ‘ “I will strike the shepherd down. Then the sheep will be scattered.” (Sach 13,7)28But after I rise from the dead, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.’29Peter said, ‘All the others may turn away. But I will not.’30‘What I’m about to tell you is true,’ Jesus answered. ‘It will happen today, in fact tonight. Before the cockerel crows twice, you yourself will say three times that you don’t know me.’31But Peter would not give in. He said, ‘I may have to die with you. But I will never say I don’t know you.’ And all the others said the same thing.
Jesus prays in Gethsemane
32Jesus and his disciples went to a place called Gethsemane. Jesus said to them, ‘Sit here while I pray.’33He took Peter, James and John along with him. He began to be very upset and troubled.34‘My soul is very sad. I feel close to death,’ he said to them. ‘Stay here. Keep watch.’35He went a little further. Then he fell to the ground. He prayed that, if possible, the hour might pass by him.36‘Abba, Father,’ he said, ‘everything is possible for you. Take this cup of suffering away from me. But let what you want be done, not what I want.’37Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. ‘Simon’, he said to Peter, ‘are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?38Watch and pray. Then you won’t fall into sin when you are tempted. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.’39Once more Jesus went away and prayed the same thing.40Then he came back. Again he found them sleeping. They couldn’t keep their eyes open. They did not know what to say to him.41Jesus returned the third time. He said to them, ‘Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look! The Son of Man is about to be handed over to sinners.42Get up! Let us go! Here comes the one who is handing me over to them!’
Jesus is arrested
43Just as Jesus was speaking, Judas appeared. He was one of the 12 disciples. A crowd was with him. They were carrying swords and clubs. The chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders had sent them.44Judas, who was going to hand Jesus over, had arranged a signal with them. ‘The one I kiss is the man,’ he said. ‘Arrest him and have the guards lead him away.’45So Judas went to Jesus at once. Judas said, ‘Rabbi!’ And he kissed Jesus.46The men grabbed Jesus and arrested him.47Then one of those standing nearby pulled his sword out. He struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.48‘Am I leading a band of armed men against you?’ asked Jesus. ‘Do you have to come out with swords and clubs to capture me?49Every day I was with you. I taught in the temple courtyard, and you didn’t arrest me. But the Scriptures must come true.’50Then everyone left him and ran away.51A young man was following Jesus. The man was wearing nothing but a piece of linen cloth. When the crowd grabbed him,52he ran away naked. He left his clothing behind.
Jesus is taken to the Sanhedrin
53The crowd took Jesus to the high priest. All the chief priests, the elders, and the teachers of the law came together.54Not too far away, Peter followed Jesus. He went right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards. He warmed himself at the fire.55The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for something to use against Jesus. They wanted to put him to death. But they did not find any proof.56Many witnesses lied about him. But their stories did not agree.57Then some of them stood up. Here is what those false witnesses said about him.58‘We heard him say, “I will destroy this temple made by human hands. In three days I will build another temple, not made by human hands.” ’59But what they said did not agree.60Then the high priest stood up in front of them. He asked Jesus, ‘Aren’t you going to answer? What are these charges these men are bringing against you?’61But Jesus remained silent. He gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, ‘Are you the Messiah? Are you the Son of the Blessed One?’62‘I am’, said Jesus. ‘And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One. You will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven.’63The high priest tore his clothes. ‘Why do we need any more witnesses?’ he asked.64‘You have heard him say a very evil thing against God. What do you think?’ They all found him guilty and said he must die.65Then some began to spit at him. They blindfolded him. They hit him with their fists. They said, ‘Prophesy!’ And the guards took him and beat him.
Peter says he does not know Jesus
66Peter was below in the courtyard. One of the high priest’s female servants came by.67When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. ‘You also were with Jesus, that Nazarene,’ she said.68But Peter said he had not been with him. ‘I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,’ he said. He went out to the entrance to the courtyard.69The servant saw him there. She said again to those standing around, ‘This fellow is one of them.’70Again he said he was not. After a little while, those standing nearby said to Peter, ‘You must be one of them. You are from Galilee.’71Then Peter began to curse. He said to them, ‘I don’t know this man you’re talking about!’72Right away the cockerel crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had spoken to him. ‘The cockerel will crow twice,’ he had said. ‘Before it does, you will say three times that you don’t know me.’ Peter broke down and cried.
