Sieg am Wasser von Merom und Eroberung des nördlichen Kanaan

1 Als aber Jabin, der König von Hazor, das hörte, sandte er zu Jobab, dem König von Madon, und zum König von Schimron und zum König von Achschaf 2 und zu den Königen, die im Norden auf dem Gebirge und im Jordantal südlich von Kinneret und im Hügelland und auf den Hügeln von Dor am Meer wohnten, 3 zu den Kanaanitern im Osten und Westen, den Amoritern, Hetitern, Perisitern und Jebusitern auf dem Gebirge, dazu den Hiwitern am Fuße des Hermon, im Lande Mizpe. 4 Diese zogen aus mit ihrem ganzen Heer, ein großes Volk, so viel wie der Sand am Meer, und sehr viele Rosse und Wagen. 5 Alle diese Könige versammelten sich und kamen und lagerten sich gemeinsam am Wasser von Merom, um mit Israel zu kämpfen. 6 Und der HERR sprach zu Josua: Fürchte dich nicht vor ihnen! Denn morgen um diese Zeit will ich sie alle vor Israel dahingeben und sie erschlagen; ihre Rosse sollst du lähmen und ihre Wagen mit Feuer verbrennen. 7 Da kamen Josua und das ganze Kriegsvolk mit ihm plötzlich über sie am Wasser von Merom und überfielen sie. 8 Und der HERR gab sie in die Hände Israels, und sie schlugen sie und jagten ihnen nach bis Sidon, der großen Stadt, und bis Misrefot-Majim und bis an die Ebene von Mizpe im Osten und erschlugen sie, bis niemand mehr unter ihnen übrig blieb. (Jos 13,6) 9 Da tat Josua mit ihnen, wie der HERR ihm gesagt hatte, und lähmte ihre Rosse und verbrannte ihre Wagen. 10 Und Josua kehrte um zu dieser Zeit und nahm Hazor ein und erschlug seinen König mit dem Schwert; denn Hazor war vormals die Hauptstadt aller dieser Königreiche. 11 Und sie erschlugen alle, die darin waren, mit der Schärfe des Schwerts und vollstreckten den Bann an ihnen, und nichts blieb übrig, was Odem hatte, und Hazor verbrannte er mit Feuer. (Jos 10,40) 12 Dazu nahm Josua alle Städte dieser Könige mit ihren Königen ein und erschlug sie mit der Schärfe des Schwerts und vollstreckte den Bann an ihnen, wie Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, geboten hatte. 13 Doch die Städte, die auf ihren Hügeln standen, verbrannte Israel nicht; sondern Hazor allein verbrannte Josua. 14 Und die ganze Beute dieser Städte und das Vieh teilten die Israeliten unter sich; aber alle Menschen erschlugen sie mit der Schärfe des Schwerts, bis sie vertilgt waren, und ließen nichts übrig, was Odem hatte. 15 Wie der HERR dem Mose, seinem Knecht, und Mose dem Josua geboten hatte, so tat Josua, dass nichts fehlte an allem, was der HERR dem Mose geboten hatte.

Das eroberte Land

16 So nahm Josua dies ganze Land ein, das Gebirge und alles, was im Süden liegt, und das ganze Land Goschen und das Hügelland und das Jordantal und das Gebirge Israel mit seinem Hügelland, (Jos 10,41) 17 von dem kahlen Gebirge an, das aufsteigt nach Seïr hin, bis nach Baal-Gad in der Ebene beim Gebirge Libanon, am Fuße des Berges Hermon. Alle ihre Könige nahm er gefangen und schlug sie nieder und tötete sie. 18 Er kämpfte aber eine lange Zeit mit diesen Königen. 19 Es war keine Stadt, die Frieden machte mit den Israeliten, ausgenommen die Hiwiter, die in Gibeon wohnten; sondern sie eroberten sie alle im Kampf. (Jos 9,15) 20 So geschah es von dem HERRN, dass ihr Herz verstockt wurde, im Kampf Israel zu begegnen, damit sie mit dem Bann geschlagen würden und ihnen keine Gnade widerführe, sondern sie vertilgt würden, wie der HERR dem Mose geboten hatte. (2Mo 4,21; 5Mo 7,2) 21 Zu der Zeit kam Josua und rottete aus die Anakiter von dem Gebirge, von Hebron, von Debir, von Anab und vom ganzen Gebirge Juda und vom ganzen Gebirge Israel, und Josua vollstreckte an ihnen den Bann mit ihren Städten (5Mo 9,2; Jos 14,6) 22 und ließ keine Anakiter übrig im Lande der Israeliten außer in Gaza, in Gat, in Aschdod; dort blieben einige von ihnen übrig. (1Sam 17,4; 2Sam 21,22) 23 So nahm Josua das ganze Land ein, ganz so, wie der HERR zu Mose geredet hatte, und gab es Israel zum Besitz, einem jeden Stamm sein Teil. Und das Land war zur Ruhe gekommen vom Kriege. (Jos 14,15; Jos 21,43)

The campaign against the cities in the north

1 Jabin was the king of Hazor. He heard about the battles Israel had won. So he sent a message to Jobab. Jobab was the king of Madon. Jabin sent the same message to the kings of Shimron and Akshaph. 2 He also sent it to many other kings. Some ruled in the mountains in the north. Some ruled in the Arabah Valley south of Kinnereth. Others ruled in the western hills. Still others ruled in Naphoth Dor in the west. 3 Jabin sent the same message to the people of east Canaan and west Canaan. He sent it to the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites and Jebusites. They lived in the central hill country. He also sent it to the Hivites who lived below Mount Hermon in the area of Mizpah. 4 Those kings marched out with all their troops. They had a large number of horses and chariots. It was a huge army. The fighting men were as many as the grains of sand on the seashore. 5 All those kings gathered their armies together to fight against Israel. They set up camp together at the Waters of Merom. 6 The LORD said to Joshua, ‘Do not be afraid of them. By this time tomorrow I will hand all of them over to Israel. All of them will be killed. You must cut the legs of their horses. You must burn their chariots.’ 7 So Joshua and his whole army attacked them suddenly. They fought against them at the Waters of Merom. 8 The LORD handed them over to Israel. The Israelites won the battle over them. They hunted them down all the way to Greater Sidon. They chased them to Misrephoth Maim. They chased them to the Valley of Mizpah in the east. Not one of them was left alive. 9 Joshua did to them what the LORD had ordered him to do. He cut the legs of their horses. He burned up their chariots. 10 At that time Joshua turned back. He captured Hazor. He killed its king with his sword. Hazor was the most important city in all those kingdoms. 11 The army of Israel killed everyone in Hazor with their swords. Its people had been set apart to the LORD to be destroyed. Israel’s army didn’t spare anyone who breathed. Then Joshua burned down the city. 12 Joshua captured all those royal cities and their kings. He and his men killed everyone in those cities with their swords. He totally destroyed them. He did just as Moses, the servant of the LORD, had commanded. 13 Many cities were built on top of earlier cities that had been destroyed. Israel didn’t burn any of those except Hazor. Joshua burned it down. 14 The army of Israel kept for themselves the livestock and everything else they took from those cities. But they killed all the people with their swords. They completely destroyed them. They didn’t spare anyone who breathed. 15 The LORD had commanded his servant Moses to do all these things. Moses had passed that command on to Joshua. And Joshua carried it out. He did everything the LORD had commanded Moses. 16 So Joshua captured the whole land. He took over the central hill country and the whole Negev Desert. He took over the whole area of Goshen. He took over the western hills. He took over the Arabah Valley. He took over the mountains of Israel and the hills around them. 17 He took over the area that begins at Mount Halak, which rises towards Seir. The area ends at Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon. Joshua captured the kings who ruled over that whole land. He put them to death. 18 He fought battles against all those kings for a long time. 19 Only the Hivites who lived in Gibeon made a peace treaty with the Israelites. No other city made a treaty with them. So Israel captured all those cities in battle. 20 The LORD himself made their people stubborn. He made them go to war against Israel so he could totally destroy them. He wanted to wipe them out. He didn’t show them any mercy. The LORD had commanded Moses to destroy the Canaanites. 21 At that time Joshua went and destroyed the Anakites. They lived all through the hill country of Judah and Israel. They lived in Hebron, Debir and Anab. Joshua totally destroyed the Anakites and their towns. 22 There weren’t any Anakites left alive in Israel’s territory. But a few were left alive in Gaza, Gath and Ashdod. 23 So Joshua captured the whole land, just as the LORD had instructed Moses. Joshua gave the land to Israel as their very own. He divided it up and gave each tribe its share. Then the land had peace and rest.
